Whining car

Hi folks,

I’ve noticed for a long time, that my car has a strange whine when on over run.  I can’t usually hear it coming on the way up the gears due to the carnewal but on the way back down I can hear a faint whine from what I think is the near side of the engine compartment. It’s too faint to be positive about the location of the noise but that’s what it sounds like.

It’s a whine that disappears at 2k revs, bang on 2k, every single time.   I’ve had a search on here and found lots of posts on whining noises but not describing anything like this and I don’t want to get sucked into paranoia, especially as it doesn’t sound like a majorly worrying noise and it hasn’t changed since I noticed it not long after I bought the car, around a year ago.  The car is a 2.7 987.1.

Can anybody shed any light on this???

Thanks, G

Mine dose this, having never owned a car with the engine sat behind my head before this, I’ve put it down to some type of belt related stuff that I know nothing about. It wasn’t mentioned after the health inspection I had post purchase, so I don’t worry about it.

Probably not the answer you’re looking for, but it’s all I have.

I have owned four 986 3.2s, doing a combined mileage of around 100k. Never had any kind of mechanical issue/failure. Whines from the engine on every one. Lots of lovely engine related noises from just behind you which you will never experience on the usual dull front engined cars. It's probably nothing to worry about, but get booked into your local specialist for a reassurance inspection if in doubt.

Possibly your water-pump is on its way out. The first sign is a whine....

Cheers, Baggers.

My car has the same symptoms you have described for at least several years now. Initially thought it was water pump-related, but having had the OPC visually inspect the pump, it looked fine. I think it is normal.

After reading plenty of threads about whining, I suspected water pump at first but I think it’s just too consistent to be a bearing failure... it starts and stops at exactly 2k every time without fail, sounds like it’s something that’s supposed to come on/off at a set rpm.

Im not gonna worry too much about it for now based on these replies.

Thanks folks, Gordon.

I had this on my 997, was alternator whine from the amp I had installed!  Took me ages to figure it out - only realised one day when the head unit stopped responding as I drove along so I took off the detachable key pad thingy to force reset it & suddenly the whining stopped, restarted again when I put it back & I realised

Also though the engines are very whiney

Other culprits are water pump or wheel bearing
