Zenedge
Hi All, I have for a while now had a damaged mid or bass speaker in my door. It’s time to replace or upgrade it but I can’t really find anything on here for a simple speaker change, all my search results show amp changes and specialist ICE builds. I like my music but I’m no audiophile, so all I want is a speaker that doesn’t fart with a bit of volume. I know my car has the ASK amp in it, so has anybody upgraded this system and have some standard speakers knocking around they want to offload? Or alternatively, could a relatively normal priced 6” 3 way speaker fit straight in the door??? If I did go down the route of a 3 way speaker, could that just be a direct replacement or would I need to start removing crossovers for the tweeters in dash etc??? TBH, I’m just looking for a simple fix for a farting speaker... passenger side door sounds perfectly adequate, if I can get the drivers door to sound as it should i’d be happy with that. Of course, if changing speakers gives better sound with little/no extra effort, I’d be up for that too. Many thanks, Gordon
thanatoid
Might be worth taking it out and checking it over, see if it's really damaged or might be packed, a long long time ago I had similar in one car and I think packed with screwed up newspaper which in my case resolved the bad sound. Or See if you can source an exact replacement, which again might involve removing and looking at, a speaker is a speaker..... I wouldn't start replacing one type with something else and then have to fiddle with crossovers etc, just complicating things - and as you say - all you want is a simple fix. Actually I may have done similar twice, and the second time used odd shaped bits of foam, yes it sounds heath-robinson but what you're trying to do is stop that resonance unless the coils knackered.... Warm day job :-) Oh, newspaper/foam behind the speaker in the void that's there, I think many years ago it was a trick to get decent sound out of cheap speakers.... not pressing hard against the flex stuff. Zenedge
Luckily for me, I get access to a nice big warm clean bay at work to do the smaller jobs, so I want to get through them before tackling the bigger jobs in better weather (coil springs on the box and tow bar on the Mrs beemer). It sounds like the speaker itself has failed, I don’t think packing will do it, however I will be taking the door card off tomorrow to try and figure out which speaker is shot, so I will give it a go while I’m in there. You’re right though... I think direct replacement is my preferred option if it needs replaced.
thanatoid
KISS - keep it simple principle, yes like for like - and big plus having a warm workshop avail :-)
perleman
The speaker has a hidden crossover somewhere in the car so you can’t replace with a new component set as the crossover would be at the wrong frequency The door does not accept a standard 8 inch speaker without cutting some of the metal away, the ask / Bose subs have a custom mounting plate replacing the entire stereo is a little time consuming but a fun project and not difficult or expensive, I did the whole job and the results are night and day tbh but if you want a low hassle solution then source a like for like speaker from Porsche

Zenedge
Thanks folks, I’ve already replaced the head unit for a pioneer CarPlay system so that’s all good. I stripped the door and found that the woofer has a 3 inch tear in the foam ring so unfortunately it won’t be repairable. I called OPC to find out how much a replacement would be, £43+vat. Then called around a few breakers, the only person that had one was prestige in Leeds and he wanted £40+vat so I’ve ordered a new one from the dealer. Should be here tomorrow. I’d have spent a lot more money and time trying to upgrade when I’m not that fussed on quality in the car, as long as I have my library and it sounds reasonable, I’m happy. Zenedge
New woofer arrived and fitted, the difference is night and day, very happy with it and all for £52 from the dealer. I do however, have a very slight rattle from my door card... the first time it came off the clips were so tight that it actually snapped 2 of the clip holders on the card so they’ve been left off until it’s sorted... still off at the moment but I’m a little concerned about putting them back on to find the rattle still there and causing more damage removing them again. Is there anything I can do to make sure the card is nice and tight and rattle free before I go replacing everything permanently???
Lonewolfgjp
I had similar when I removed a doorcard, you are best to replace all clips. They aren't expensive and i think they are meant to be single use?
Zenedge
It’s not the clips that have broken but the actual door card itself... the C shaped cups that the clips slot into ?. There’s only one or two broken and the broken ones have have another two either side very close so I’m hoping they should be ok without them but I’d like to make sure I get it right 1st time when I replace it properly and not need to take it off again to fix a rattle. I will get new clips though, good idea... taking no chances this time.
