Oil Level

Just had a major service carried out by an indie I've not used before including brake fluid change and new spark plugs.  All seems well but upon checking the oil level when I got home with the engine warm via the cars electronics I noticed that it was telling me that whilst I had an ample supply of oil, the indicator was not showing a full reading but two bars down from full.  Is this normal as when I first bought the car from a reputable dealer 2 years ago (and after a service from them) it was showing a full reading on the indicator gauge?

I don't think these gauges are the most reliable method of checking oil, so I wouldn't read too much into one reading. Was the car on perfectly level ground? Was it left long enough for all the oil to drain into the sump? I'd keep an eye on it over the next couple of weeks and contact the indie for advice if it continues to read low.

Perfectly normal mate. Infact it shows that the indi did a good job.

Curious, why is it good its half full rather than actually full?

I'd be with the OP and expect it to be full after service

I'm sure one of the oil level experts will be along shortly..as far as I was told 2 bar down was the perfect level to have  it at.

I find my oil level is hugely sensitive to level.  I always check in my garage as I know its level there.

If the top segment is lit the oil is completely full , I was told one segment down after an oil change is fine as you don't want to risk overfilling.

Sorry my mistake, 981 (but the above may still hold true), from owners manual...

so 'between the two' is fine, I guess on the basis that its easier to aim to fill between the two, than to completely fill without overfilling, then the former is wiser

That's how it was always explained to me.  Ideally one notch down from maximum on absolutely level ground and you are safe...

An Update

I've now spoken to the indie and he explained to me that the car was filled with the correct amount of oil as per the specifications and then checked after a warm up test run.  It was then checked again and topped up to the indicator level before handing back to me.  Apparently the electronic gauge is a little temperamental and should be read as an indicator and not absolute (apart from when reading LOW).  They are quite happy for me to pop back at any time to have them check it again and if oil is needed they will happily top it up again for me.

So no worries and happy days.

I think due to having the semi dry sump arrangement it takes a long time for all the oil to drip back down. Also because there isn’t a proper dipstick garages tend to just put a set amount in (approx 7.5 - 8 litres) sometimes a bit more than this may have come out.

I had a similar issue after my last OPC service, I ended up topping up by just over half a litre after a couple of weeks to get 4 bars lit up.  As said, 2 bars is nothing to worry about but maybe top up in a week if still showing low.

i have just done my own additional oil change today on mine and I have put in 7.5 litres of oil and expect to top up by another 0.5-1 litre over the next week or two.

Agreed with this - there is a tiny camber on the road I'm parked on, and depending which way round I park (i.e. drivers side against curb or passenger side against curb) it goes from EMPTY to FULL

On completely flat ground it is bang in the middle. Guessing the sensor is only on one side of the sump
