Fuel pump replacement

Hi all, so on flight back from Australia and my missus said car doesn’t start. When I had the car at an indie garage a few months back the chap completed work and then was unable to start the car again. (Completely unrelated to what he was doing, and I’ve been unable to replicated the problem in last 2 months).  - he suggested the fuel pump was not getting enough current. (He said relay was tested and good).

So... question here is, what should I spend on getting the fuel pump replaced? Average cost etc.

Thanks for input.

Has the fuel filter ever been changed? These tend to be forgotten, but mine was full of gunk when I changed it at 140k. Having said that, if it was a fuel supply problem, I would expect the issue to be noticeable when the engine is under full load, rather than at idle. Has the battery been tested to ensure the voltage isn't dropping too much?

Hey @Nobbie good shouts all round.  It had a full service not long before I bought it so assumed it would have had a new filter put it.

Like I said the indie garage when having problems starting the car tested the relays and power delivery to the pump. He said it was getting enough current, he suggested the fuel pump should be replaced at some stage soon.

I’ll check the battery.

Also, it really shouldn’t make a difference, but the missus just fessed up she topped the fuel tank up with super unleaded.

I might just call Precision Porsche and get it towed up there.

Sounds like a good call, Precision Porsche should know the usual issues associated with non starters. Let us know what the fix is. Super Unleaded! Does the missus think you're made of money?

Pump is pretty simple simple to DIY. A couple of hours. The Porsche part is stupidly priced, but apparently there is another that's the same spec for 40 quid or so. I might have it book marked. Will check on the pc when I get home.

It wasn’t the fuel pump. It was the relay and/or the way the ecu sends or doesn’t send a signal. The car runs and there’s a bypass they’ll show me. I’ll pick it up next week. - got a fresh MOT too

  • 2 weeks later...

So.. I got the car back, after some diagnosis pointed to fuel_pump relay.  Replaced with a second hand one (??) - Anyway, I just paid and drove away.
2 days later, CAR STOPS and won't start again :(

AA man came out, took the battery out, exposed the fuel-pump, got me to crank it, while he smashed it with a hammer!  Car started! - Money is on fuel-pump, which was what it was diagnosed with before I took it in to workshop who replaced relay and spent an age checking other things.

Any preferable fuel-pump?  The Siemens VDO one seems good no?!
Any shouts, please let me know.  Want to try get car back on road by Monday!

He's my kind of mechanic?

Just to add to my earlier comment about the fuel filter, it's not something that is usually changed during a service, but only every 48k or something. My car was very well looked after, but looks like this item got missed as the last filter was dated 2006. It's a little awkward to get to as it sits under the car between the coolant pipes from front to rear. These just need to be lossened and pushed out of the way. New one can be had for £15 on eBay. Not saying it's the main issue, but may not be helping if it's never been changed. This is what came out of mine

I replaced my fuel pump last week. £48 used from Steve Strange (Douglas valley breakers) and it’s not hard to get at... under the battery. I’d guess 2hrs max. (I didn’t pay as they’d cleaned the old one recently and not spotted it was failing)

Hi all, thanks for input. @Loz987 good to get another breakers name. Thanks.  @PaulQ I got the Siemens vdo! inc fuel filter £220 all in. Got my indie guy coming later to smash it in.

I was going to go back to the specialist, but this way I get my car on the road today!

Will update on whether or not this fixes the start issue (which it will). Specialists are still not ruling out the OBC/ECU. Even though big welsh man in shiny jacket and big smile used the big hammer to thump the pump. ?

YES! We’re on. Started first time! Seems to have more consistent Rev and feels great. Will update accordingly, but think that’ll be they problem solved! Cheers all. Enjoy the weekend.
