highsider
Hello all. Took the Boxster to an independent specialist for a check-over as I just bought it. All good. However, I was told the power steering pressure line had a slight leak which will only get worse over time, so worth getting that replaced. Fine - its a 20 year old car so if it needs replacing, it needs replacing. The original part number is 98634744309 but the part received when ordered is number 99634745210 and doesn't fit as it is too short and pipe angle is slightly different. Surely a mistake? No - apparently. Because the original is no longer manufactured and is superseded hence 99634745210 is now considered the replacement. Fitting the part supplied requires another section of the steering line to be replaced - costing another £500 (ish) for the part and an extra 5+ hours labour for fitting. ? That's on top of the £180 for the leaky pipe replacement and 2 hours labour fitting for that. The garage was surprised as I was (although I thought they should know this already being a specialist) and suggested I find another on eBay or get it repaired - they were not too forthcoming for ideas on the latter. Otherwise its easily over £1k+ to fix the leak. ? Here's the difference between the pipes. The original is the longer one and the leak is from the silver union to the rubber section. Question is - can these be fixed as I assume there is no point kidding myself 98634744309 is available somewhere. Has any one else had this problem? Nobbie
Might be worth googling for a local hydraulic hose repairer to see if they could replace the rubber hose. The silver joint may be a fairly standard joint for them.
Wasserboxer
Agree with Nobbie, Take it to your local Agricultural hydraulic people, they should be able to fashion something.
the baron
That can be fixed unles the rubber is perished along the length.
edc
Take it to a Pirtek outlet or similar.
K.I.T.T.
I may be barking up the wrong tree, if so, forgive my ignorance. Is this the common 986 problem of a split ferrule on the PAS line? If so, isn't the 'unofficial' fix a simple jubilee clip?
Shazbot
Someone like PIRTEK will be able to make a new one up for a lot less than OPC prices. they have a few London based centres. http://www.pirtek.co.uk/

If the part is off the car on the floor under your foot you might as well get a new pile made up ? I'd guestimate £45.

I think if the ferrule is split, but not yet leaking, then the jubilee clip will help stop it deteriorating to the point of leaking, but once it's leaking as in this case, a replacement is needed as the jubilee clip may not stem the leak.
