Top mounts & bumps stops

Car was in for some bolt drilling and wheel alignment this week and Precision noticed that the top mounts and bump stops are split. I only purchased the car in June 2018, but the previous owner had the front springs, top mounts and bump stops replaced on 10th May 2017.

That doesn't sound right to me, surely they should last a bit longer than that? I don't know what parts they are, maybe cheap rubbish as the work wasn't carried out by OPC or a specialist. I'll try calling them tomorrow and find out what parts were used. If they are genuine parts should they still be under warranty?

The invoice says the parts were £159 for springs, £140 for mounts and £52 for the bump stops (probably includes a little mark up). Does that sound a bit cheap for genuine parts?

I'm really not interested in cheap parts for the car, unless it's bulbs or something I can replace easily myself. Precision have quoted me £400 for the top mounts, bump stops and labour (not sure how many hours but they said they would need the car for half a day, so probably 2 hours + valet?), I'm happy to pay that as I know they'll be genuine parts.

Also, while they have it all open, is there anything else I should be looking to have replaced?

Any advise would be a massive help please.

Thanks

Top mounts should last pretty much for ever on the rear, but on the front the hard rubber insert can become unbonded from the steel mount itself.

Aftermarket parts are fine and cost about 40 pounds each, with genuine bump stops around a tenner.

No way they would deteriorate that quickly, so sounds like they weren't replaced. Not sure how you could tell they are split though tbh without removing the shock.

If you get a torch, it's easy enough to see the bumpstops for yourself.

This is worth a read to see the various parts that make up the strut assembly.

Sounds highly unlikely to impossible that they could deteriorate in just over 12 months. I'd imagine even cheap aftermarket parts (if they're even available) would last a fair bit longer than that.

As the Paul q said, the bump stops are easy to check underneath the wheel arch, and genuine porsche are a yellowish colour if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the prompt replies, I really appreciate it. I think it's worth getting a second opinion first. Do the costs match up as I listed? My friend told me this evening the mounts and bump stops were probably original prior to being replaced in 2017, does that sound about right?

Apologies, I have to correct myself, the invoice say the bearing kit was replaced in 2017, not the bump stops. Why wouldn't you replace perishables while you are down there!?

Does your wife always give your balls a trim while she's down there?

It turns out that the top mounts, springs and bearings were replaced in May 2017. Precision said that they looked new. I spoke to the one man garage that carried out the work and he doesn't have the receipts anymore, but remembers carrying out the work for the previous owner, all with parts from Porsche.

It's a bit annoying, but I've booked in the work at Precision. It will at least get done properly this time and they won't through away receipts!

Not sure how anyone could bugger up fitting new parts to the point that they need replacing less then two years later, but I guess you will have to trust your garage.

I would be wanting to see the removed parts though.

Oh dear I'm getting rather confuzzled.

Why do the parts need replacing if they're likely to be genuine porsche and precision have said they look new?

They are split. I think everyone's a bit confused, will find out what the problem is next week.

So what happened that the guy that changed the springs, top mounts and bearing kit back in May 2017, didn't fit the support plates that where attached to the old bearings. This caused excessive movement and ultimately premature failure of both top mounts.

I'll contact the guy and see if I can get any compensation, but I'm not really that hopeful.

On the plus side, the car is handling like dream, like a new car!
