stupidget Posted January 23, 2020 Report Share Posted January 23, 2020 I've noticed on my 2004 S that there is a lot of white smoke on startup and it gradually disappears as the engine warms up. I've read several posts stating that 'it's normal for a box engine', 'they all do that' etc etc, but I saw on YouTube that if there is any suction when you try to remove the oil cap with the engine running then the AOS needs replacing. So I tested this today by starting the car and removing the oil cap and lo and behold there was a very slight bit of suction when I removed the cap, I also noticed that the white smoke disappeared with the cap off and returned slightly with the cap on. GmanB Posted January 23, 2020 Report Share Posted January 23, 2020 If you are getting white smoke on every cold start up, replacing the AOS is certainly a good place to start along with cleaning the throttle body and some sensor? These engines are designed to kick out white smoke every now again (20 ish or so cold starts), something to do with burning off some oil that's got into some where it shouldn't. It happened to me once, started it as I was leaving work, got stuck in traffic straight away and saw white smoke flooding out. Some guy walking by knocked on my window and said "mate your car is on fire, that's gonna be expensive." Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It is happening on each cold start-up so I'm going to get a new AOS (they're only £70 for a new one on ebay) and get my local garage to fix whilst they're doing some tiny bits of welding work. Good idea, might be worth asking them to clean the throttle body while it's apart. They can get oil in there which maybe causing some white smoke. No there is no tricks or special favours, ebay prices generally have a mark up on them. You will be surprised how much the part prices can be from your local OPC. You could ask for the 10% discount for Porsche Owners Club, but the OPC in Leeds always asks me for a membership card. I've also found depending on who you are dealing with on the parts desk to the price you get. The older gentlemen always giving the best prices to me. GmanB Posted January 24, 2020 Report Share Posted January 24, 2020 There was very little different in price between ebay and OPC when I bought mine. Ebay was more convenient so went with that. Slightly off topic though, do Specialists give you OPC prices if you order from them? It does help if you go in with I need 986.xxx.xxx.xx part number for a xx year Boxster so they don't have to do the research, just a double check.
