Dazzevans
Hi guys I was told that someone on here could decipher the build codes for me on my prospective purchase car. Hopefully the photo of the service book has attached to this post! Your help is much appreciated.

Dazzevans
Ah brilliant, thanks. Another question, can you tell the difference between a 2.7 engine and a 3.2 engine by looking at it? As in are there any stand out differences you could spot in a photo? I have googled both and compared images to one of the rebuild that happened on my prospective purchase to confirm and I couldn't!! Dazzevans
Thanks @NicGun and good morning. The car was previously owned by a doctor so I am expecting that the car was well looked after as they could afford it. The service stamps and receipts tend to agree with that. Sounds promising, look in history / bills for suspension related work too, makes a big difference in how these cars drive.
Dazzevans
Front shocks and arms were changed recently, not sure about the rears. With the engine rebuild/IMS etc it looks like a good car (evidence of the rebuild in motion below). I have no idea if that is a 3.2 or not mind!!! ½cwt
The 8 digit engine number decode is as follows: First digit - 6 = six cylinder Second digit - type, 5 is for 2.5 and 2.7 and 7 is for 3.2 engines Third digit is the year starting from V - '97, W - '98, X - '99, Y - '00, 1 - '01, 2 - '02 etc. Last 5 digits are the actual serial number. So my engine number for a 2000 Boxster S starts 67Y..... I believe replacement engines are numbered slightly differently with AT appearing in the code somewhere but this would need further confirmation. On a removed engine you as in your picture you should be able to see the number and it should be on the V5 which should also should be BOXSTER S under the model description. On just a car the easiest tell-tale is the centre rad intake in the front bumper below the reg plate. Inside, a 6 speed gear lever, the badge at the bottom of the centre console and the kick plates on the door sills should read Boxster S even if the boot, which would also be Boxster S, has been de-badged. There are others like the original colour of the left and right rad intakes should be titanium silver not black and the windscreen surround should have a titanium trim, but these have been lost in either restyling or screen replacement more easily over time. I'm not sure people are trying to pass off 2.7s as 3.2s as there's no real gain verses the risk of fraud, by doing so, however if in doubt or someone won't offer the info, walk away. For clarification, I wasn't suggesting these guys are doing anything fraudulent. I was merely interested on the differences.

I merely said if you think anyone is hiding anything, walk away as there are other options out there. It would cost more than the price difference between a 2.7 and a 3.2 to make a 2.7 look like a 3.2 so it is highly unlikely anyone would try. In fact the engine code is on the factory codes label picture M9621- 672.... so it should be a 2002 model year Boxster S.
