  1. I love my 996 but do wish that it was a convertible sometimes. When I had the tyres replaced and had the Geo sorted, it really handles well and the 3.4 has more torque than my old 2.7 but both are fast enough for the road. The Boxster is a lot better for travelling as you have two boots and I am not a fan of leaving bags and cases on the back seats.

    Gentlemen

I've fitted 9x7 seats to both my 986 and 996.

The easiest way to explain the difference between 9x6 and 9x7 seat is for me to explain using my 996.  I used to have the 996 seat all the way back and all the way down.  Now I am suing the 997 seat I have it 3 clicks forward and every time I drive it I think the seat is too low.

So yes the seat alone makes a massive difference.

Thank you for the explanation. Are the seat runners the same please? I have removed the stop on the 996 seats and that forget s a few more mm but that option is not there with the Boxster as the engine cover doesn’t move!

My son had a 2000 986 S and now has a 2005 987 S and the interior is more generous in the 987.  The advantage the 986 had was that you could do the "GT3 delete" which creates more space for your left leg.

I have taken centre console out of my 996 and to be honest I haven’t noticed any difference in leg room but I do like the look though..

  4. There seems to be slightly less room in the earlier car but I am not sure if this is due to the seats or more than just the seats? I used the 987 daily but I find the 996 just a bit to snug for that and as I keep browsing the classifieds for another convertible, the 986 appeals if a change of seats to 987 versions gets a bit of leg room back.
    thanks in advance

  5. There are a couple and as far as I can see, they are fetching close to original money!  The video that showed the boot also showed a small area where the electric roof would normally sit. The thing is, I don't actually play golf at the moment but keep threatening to do it and when I had my last Boxster, kept the clubs in the boot for those sunny days!

  6. I heard/saw a Boxster Spyder when out cycling today and hadnt really considered one before but after hearing the car with a sports exhaust and reading a couple of reviews, it is now on the list! As far as I can see, the boot shape is the same as a normal 987 but there appears to be a couple of reasonably sized levers to tension the roof and they must encroach on the boot space? What I am mostly concerned about is room for a set of golf clubs (which snuggly fit in a 987.1 with a carry bag) and wondered if anyone knows if the levers make this difficult or impossible?

    Thanks in advance.

  7. Give type911 a call and talk it through with Matt the owner. He has several options and seems to be able to get most things. He is a member on here but can never remember his username.

re suspension, lots of people swear by brand x or y but compared with what? if your existing stuff is worn and not set up properly, my experience suggests that anything new and properly set up is going to be better than before you did the work and comments like transformed can not be solely due to the make of parts used.

A minor oil weep from a screw-in part has "replace PDK box" as the official response, and no third party would touch it as they didn't know what was behind and if they'd cause further damage.  It all looked utterly bizarre, a 10k box change for a £50 part, at least until someone said "the oil weep there is a sign of deeper problems". A bit of a fight outside warranty but he got it.

I recall there is a similar oil leak on the tiptronic but a couple of places have a fixed price solution for that now. As the cars get older, even such a reliable bit of engineering will suffer some problems and hopefully, generate an aftermarket fix.

  9. as suggested by @Menoporsche I wasn't looking for a 911 but ended up doing a deal involving a straight swap for my TVR. I haven't driven another 911 so don't have anything to compare it with but so far, I am very impressed with it. My Boxster was a 987 not a 986 but I quote like the feel of the 996. When I got it, the 996 was on old tyres and mismatched as well and I wasn't sure about the steering although a geo set-up and new tyres soon sorted that.

It depends on if you want a roof or not. Personally, I am not a fan of the 911 convertible.

One thing I will say is that the parts are the same price if they go wrong but the value of the 911 is higher than the Boxster which is good for man maths.

I think the general consensus is that they are a bit flakey. FYI the 8020 that i installed has wireless CarPlay built in. Has worked flawlessly so far for me during 4 hours driving.

Thanks Matt, that’s good to know. If I get a 9x7, this will be on the shopping list. Hope you are both well?

You’ll notice I’ve not mentioned the USB cable necessary to connect the Apple or Android phone. At the moment I’ve routed mine into the glove box, but it’s only temporary. I think I will probably move it to the cubby at the rear of the transition tunnel eventually. I’m very anti-phone and driving, so want it to be well away from view and that seems like a good place for it

Has anyone used one of those Bluetooth adapters that allow you to transmit car play with connecting via USB?

Hi Graham. Ferry company says leave it till nearer the time and I think I will get a full refund from them.

Regarding the villa which is fully paid they are offering 85% back and I should be able to get the outstanding 15% as I booked it intentionally through my credit card rather than debit.

    Watch this space!

Leave it to the week seems to be the option of choice. The villa people seem reasonable. I suspect my hotel will refund if France is still on lockdown but not if it isn't. The fact that I can't get there and the reason for me and thousands of others going that weekend is cancelled is nothing to do with them!

We had northern Spain and Portugal, touring in the Boxster booked up for three weeks in mid May. Booked the ferry and a beautiful villa for the last week in Portugal. Now all down the toilet!

      Could be worse .............

How you doing Peter? Looks like a couple of bodges from the past you have sorted so far?

have you cancelled everything? I was trying to sort out my Monaco Classic stuff and the event is cancelled but they don’t seem to want to give the money back, my flight is cancelled and I think I can get the money and the hotel is basically saying tough luck if you want to cancel now. They are waiting until the week to see if France is still on lockdown!

Many thanks! Any info would be helpful...

I got an up-date from my friend and for both the DVLA and TFL, he needed to get confirmation from Porsche and send it all in hard copy, separately to each authority (DVLA 1st and then TFL when up-dated on systems) and chase several times by phone. He is now set-up correctly.

Right, to resurrect this, I am now deeply confused.

I put 3 or 4 identical car's reg (2004 986S, manual) I found on Autotrader into the ULEZ checker and none are liable for the charge.

Put my car in, I am liable. Identical cars, same engine, gearbox, year. I don't get it.

Its infuriating because I will need to sell if I'm liable. I dont want to.

For example: GN04 SCV is on Autotrader. No ULEZ charge. Others: NK54 AVO, WX04 GMG, GX53 FTK etc etc etc...

My car is OEZ 8589. 2004 (May) 986 3.2S manual. I have to pay. WHY???

I have sent TFL an email asking them to explain the discrepancy. They just came back saying my car doesn't meet the regs. They completely failed to address the fact that identical cars, both younger and older than mine, are not liable.

    HELP!

My friend who has a 987 is going through this process as his car comes up as being liable for the charge. It starts with the DVLA and then flows down to TFL. I am seeing him at the weekend and will see where he is upto with it.
