  1. Just refitted my headlights after a refurbished at my local paint shop.

I did notice when I was refitting the rubber that fits around the front of the light a little knocking :woot: and  thought oh it looks like they have broken something.

on further inspection after removing the back plate i could see the cable that comes from the fan and goes to a box and the box has a sticky back so must at some time been stuck to the inner wall of the light  I stuck it back there but not sure how long it will stay there.

But the lights look so much better.

  2. I seem to remember I might have the original cdr unit in my attic I put ther when I updated mine if I do it will have the original porche instruction book and the password

It was in good working order when I pulled it out.

I would not have a glue how much to sell it for thought.

OK, sell as a bundle with the Ali Express kit so someone can do exactly that and keep their original.  Fits 986 and 986S by the way.

    Thanks for the advice mate

John, the gearshift should have part number 997 424 010 00 on it, or something starting 997 if it is from a 987 or 997.  I think the level height is the same between the two cars, just the throw is shorter.

If it is a 997 shift, these area good upgrade to shorten the throw of the standard 986 gear shift.

Hi Chris good to know I've looked all over and the only number I can see is on the green bit that says 986.424.010.03 so probably a 986

The reason I bought the two was because fitting the Ali express one means you have to saw off the plastic ends to fit the new bearing and that means you can't wind back if you don't like the feel of the new

  5. The last thing for sale is a great book I bought and found it really useful when installing my cruises control on my 986 but it as loads of instructions well 101 projects because that's what it's called.

    :D

£10 or free if buying one of the items above

  6. Now I was going to install a short shift gear stick but something else I never got round to.

I bought the Ali express kit and also and complete gear shift assembly from Douglas breakers I thought it was a 986 but I think it's a 987 because the gearstick is only as tall as the one I was going to swap it with

£70 for both or £50 each

  8. Now I know I'm getting past it I tried to fit my Zunsport grilles over the weekend a job I did on my 986 in an hour 7 years ago but I had to admit failure and I'll have to get Lee to sort them next service.

It's no fun getting old. 😕

Whilst I don’t rely on the PCM for Nav as again I use CarPlay it’s nice to have its maps up to date in case mobile cell coverage is poor/fails. Rare these days I grant you but it’s nice to have the fallback.

Not so rare out of the city's in Spain and France

  10. Really sorry to read of your bad luck I'm not mechanical so can't help you but it think all 986 owner worry about this happing.

I part exchange my 986 with 150k on it I don't want to think how much money I spent on it but nothing needed doing to it but I drive through  Europe two or more time a year and this issue was at the back of my mind that's why I upgraded my boxster but I will now need to spend on this car I'm already £400 in with pre and post inspections

Hope you find a suitable engin at a good price if that's what you decide to do

But as John found out above, there are MY2013 cars with PCM firmware version 3, which causes the 'zoom' issue referred to in the other thread. So best not to go just by the MY but check the firmware version.

I only know my car is a 62 reg registered in early 2013 so called a 2013 buti dint know the MY year but yes Jon it is a 3xxx pcm I looked at the history and it had been updated but only to the latest version of 3.

  12. I just checked the fw on my3.1 pcm and I'm a little gutted my car is registered in early 2013 but the FW is 3.41 do I'll have the issue of

Please note: This update works perfectly with software version 4.XX. If you have software version 2.XX or 3.XX installed, there will be a problem with zooming in more than 1.5 miles

So don't think I'll bother I'll do the same as Jon and when driving in Europe I'll put my final destination in the cars sat nav and use my phone with Google at least I'll get lastest traffic and speed limits and speed cameras on.

We should  set up some categories vote at the end of the year and publish the winners with the calendar. The centre arm rest storage on the 981 is to shallow to contain my beautifully curved and colour coded Oakley sun glasses it's soooooo annoying. 😊

Must agree just too shallow it gets vote

Particularly for European trips I'd prefer to use an online updated solution rather than Porsche stuff which in practice will rarely be newer than 3 years old. Have a look at the various threads for mounting and charging a phone, @Davey P started one (and didn't finish it IIRC) testing various solutions.  I've realised that my phone should really be updated to a 12 at least so I can get the magnetic wireless charging, for this reason. And/or look at those add-ons which convert your PCM to CarPlay/Android Auto, so the online stuff displays on the bigger screen.

Yes I used my phone and google maps in my 986 when driving through Spain and France so I'll probably do that but I like the smaller display you can have in the multi function display on the right better than the full map on the PCM

But I'll read Jon thread have a think

  15. Just a thought because I have done a few European trips in my 986 I certainly intend to in the 981 but in the 986 I always used Google maps.

Now maps are built in how do you up date them can you buy a CD perhaps @Richard Hamilton might have an idea i remember he had a solution for one of the boxsters perhaps the 987

  17. Interesting I leave the handbrake off when I'm parked on my drive in Mt 986 and leave it in 1st the few times I forgot I have had to accelerate to free the brake.

I'm getting a 981 soon and it has an automatic handbrake and only is disconnected when you pull away.

I won't be driving it much in the winter how can I avoid this problem 🤔
