  1. A browse on a MOT history check reveals all the normal Boxster issues resulting from lack of use,the only outstanding one being the rear anti roll bar bushes are reported as worn.

As said many times about an old Porsche Boxster on this forum go in with your eyes wide open and be prepared for suspension component renewal-not scarmongering just being factual.

Ah, bugger. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet.

Thanks for offering a silver lining though ! 😀

Be prepared for possible skinned knuckles depending on "Do you feel lucky punk"......

Sorry for being stupid, but why is it so necessary ?

Basically springs wear over time so if you only replace one on an axle set the ride height may alter, the handling might suffer,steering/suspension geometry might alter too.

Apologises for the gloom but you do have car that when set up correctly has great handling 🙂

I would appreciate any comments on the car and also if you see anything better around the same price please give me a shout, it's my first Boxster.

Did look at the advert but no longer available-did you buy it?

BTW just down the road from you in Westcliff on sea.

    Morning all,

Having not had the roof down for a few months (a weak excuse, I know, considering the heated seats!), I have seem to have developed a problem with the clamshell alignment. The clamshell no longer wants to completely close when the hood is down, stopping shy of a consistent 1 inch all round. Having read a few posts on this, I have checked that the hood is all correctly attached and I have greased all moving parts but still the clamshell is not completely sitting flush.

Am I right in thinking there is a manual adjustment that can be made, and if so, is it an easy fix?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

As this is a question you might receive a better audience if you re-submit in the "Boxster chat 986" section or "Technical question" area 🙂

  6. Did you replace your drive belt too?

I'm wondering if you have been given a shorter belt-one which assumes you do not have an air conditioning pulley-though I'd guess the shorter belt would be a complete mare to stretch over an additional wheel.....:-(

Boot stuck closed, How can I find the cable to release this

Does anyone know where the rear boot cable is ?

Possibly behind the rear towing eye....behind the rear plastic wheel arch liners-basically look in ALL the same places you would look for it to unlock the front BUT at the back of the vehicle 🙂

many of the buttons on the head unit are unresponsive including Sound.

Maybe as a 1st suggestion could you pull the unit out and check the connections on the rear?

Sticky buttons has come up as a discussion on here before-do you know any decent TV repair people?-possibly just poor contact behind the buttons.

Bluetooth is easy to add via the cigarette lighter once/if you can find a solution to your initial problems.

Haven't heard of this either. A few of us with 986s approaching or past 150k miles on the original fobs.

From what I remember reading on this forum it was not mileage related.

I believe it was activation count that caused a non performing key.

Hi folks, first post, been lurking for a while.

Picked up a 2001 986 Boxster S yesterday. Test drive went fine, seller pointed out one of the keys didn't work. Did the deal, seller left and once insurance etc sorted attempted to drive home. Car wouldn't fire up, (turned over but no ignition), also noticed fuel tank totally empty. Called taxi to fuel station and waited. After a while I tried the car again and it started. Got to fuel station, filled up. Car wouldn't start (turned over but no ignition). Though perhaps immobiliser issue as I been given both keys but not sure if I was using the correct one. Waited a while, tried car again and it fired up. Drove it 4 hours home no issue.

Today, short run into town, no issues. This evening drove it in rush hour traffic, car suddenly dies. Pushed it to the side, waited 15 minutes or so, tried it again, fired up and drove home.

No warning lights, temp looks ok. Had a look in rear boot and there's condensation on boot lid and in and around coolant cap. Also some condensation (not gunky, just moisture) under oil filler cap. Coolan is below the low line but not empty. Coolant cap is on tight so removed it, retightened it. Went back an hour later and can hear small hissing from cap (which is the one with the 00 ending part number on it).

I think my first question is, is it likely an issue with the coolant cap or tank is likely to have caused the engine to stop in traffic? Considering taking it my local indepenedant but wanted to canvas advice here first.

    Cheers

I think you might require a new ignition barrel-common fault causing intermittent starting-somebody will be along shortly with the best place to source this item.

The lastest expansion cap ends in 04 so replace it.

  11. Looks like when you grab the disc the driveshaft does not move by the same amount so I'd guess your diagnosis is right.

Could be driveshaft splines though I'm no expert-I'm sure somebody with more knowledge will be along shortly 🙂

I'm still thinking backlash in the diff/gearbox......

also driveshaft on same side seems to have some play when i turn it, i'm guessing it should be nice a tight and not knock?

Are you certain its the driveshaft that has play and not the backlash in the differential/gearbox?
