Doesn't find much in the way of aluminium alloys, white metal or plastics though.
I was thinking along the lines of the bearing we ALL fear the most but point taken 🙂

Many thanks once again 1/2cwt.

As an alternative internet diagnosis the dedicated alarm battery might be giving you issues.....

my 1st 986 2.7 had an oil n filter change at Silverston Porche - they told me they found metal in the oil and not to worry - 3/4 wks later the IMS went pop after that i used Dovehouse in Northants when i upgraded to a 986S,who informed me that with every oil change with older models they did the magnet through the oil as a standard procedure
The magnet procedure is a very good idea!

4 new Koni Special Active dampers, ARB drop links and rear bump stops have been delivered today to go with the coffin arms and tuning forks that came last week. Plus Gas soaking into all the nuts, bolts and joints as I write. £920 into suspension refurb project.... Now (in no particular order) for the blood, toil, tears and sweat! 🤞 😨
I've probably missed this info but where did you source the above parts?-I did PM you so it might be Autodoc?
No mention of changing the springs?

Picked the car up yesterday.... large bill
What they said was the oil in the sump was "sludgy" and on inspection had metal fragments in it - but when they checked the oil filter (and fuel filter?) there was no metal.
The previous oil change & minor service 2 years ago was done at a different specialist and I don't know how thorough they are.
They suggest to carry on driving (I don't track it or anything like that) and take a closer look next year when I planned to get the clutch changed.
Sooo... road trip to the South of France or not?
Sludgy....how did they drain that?-I think for my own piece of mind I'd want to do another oil change in a couple of weeks myself and see what shows up on the filter.
The only part of the bearing we all fear that would be remotely soft would surely be the roller cage?-more experienced please confirm this.

It was a long time ago now but from recollection very straight forward with basic tools. No part ordered but found a piece of aluminium tubing which was exactly the same diameter and cut done to length.
Many thanks for the info 👍

I definitely will. But if there is no leakage the bearing could still suddenly go bad couldn’t it?
Yes of course but as said by others these are high performance vehicles that at their age will require a level of maintenance.
Please go into this with your eyes open with the potential of immediate outlay-many on here recommend a 2K contingency fund to cover these possibilities.

The 'key information' does not match a Porsche 986 lol

Peek underneath the vehicle for any signs of oil leaks between engine/gearbox......

While the suspensions all apart and you're under you might as well whack on the GT3 brake ducts.
Also worth checking the handbrake sleeve/tubing. It had fractured on one of my cars.
One of my handbrake cable sleeve/tubing has fractured-can I ask if you sourced it from OPC?
Was it difficult to remove and what method did you use?
Thanks in advance.

If the electronic frunck release works start by checking the battery voltage.

Information for the original poster (OP)
Incorrect bleeding will give similar symptoms.
Try raising the rear of the vehicle and locate the bleed flap(lift it up vertical) below a cover where the dipstick lives in the boot.
Idle the vehicle and include holding the revs to 2500rpm for a couple of minutes each time.

Belt was new a few hundred miles ago, currently sorting cruise wiring so haven’t looked into it again yet.
Bits related to the exhaust could be the cause of a resonance.

+1 as per Menoporsche...though also possible belt tensioner/associated pulleys and without a known history the belt itself.

Not to dampen your excitement to own a 986 but most experienced guys/girls on this forum suggest a £2k first year budget should you have any issues/faults.
Remember these cars aren't generally fragile but replacement and/or repairs can rack up quickly.
As Bradders59 expressed many do their own spanner work so limiting the drain on your finances.

What tyres
in 986
Personally I'm not a track day or fast driver so went for a set of Avon ZV7 for my Boxster after having the same fitted to a Mercedes recently.
They have an A rating for wet road grip and are a relatively quiet tyre.
I used National tyre's as they are promoting a 5% discount atm and pay over 4 months at 0%

Totally agree.

If we could all afford it then I expect most people would fit Michelin Pilot Sport 2/4 N rated or whatever, but someone who dismisses a tyre without having even tried it on the basis that it is made in China, cheap, a brand they have never heard of etc, etc, etc is a tyre snob in my book.
I'm just a tight bastard
And lets not forget if we all had money we would be driving their latest offering.........;-)

4 minutes ago, Boxsum said:Surly it’s not totally down to tyre snobbery. Some boxster 986 owners have bought their cars because they like the 986 not because they are cheap. So if you can afford to put decent tyres on then surly it’s their own choice regardless of his or hers driving ability.

What tyres
in 986
Mine had Uniroyal rainsports on it when i made the purchase.
I'm not doing track days or racing away from the lights/round bends at break neck speeds so i'm comfortable with the tyre's my vehicle wears which are mid-range I guess?
I appreciate that some would want to keep it original/update to the latest in tyre specification but I also appreciate that some people only use their cars on sunny days with the wind in their hair-not that I have much hair 😉

Did they replace the RMS...IMS and anything with initials that could go bang on the 986's.......................
