driving through an empty part of an industrial estate.  The car in front was doing 35 according to the very nice policeman too. However, I was the only one to be pulled over.

At best its points and a fine, at worse it's a visit to the courthouse.

There's always the speed awareness course, though they might look at you car and decide you're already aware of speed!

  2. I joined this year but I probably won't renew. I get a magazine in the post and they have lots of meets which I'm unlikely to attend. I do buy a lot of Esso. Discount parts from Porsche main dealers may just recover my membership fee. We'll see.

I've been and looked at it today and I've brought it. Looks better in the flesh than in pics. Just need the spin locks.

Did you buy this from Sanjay?

… & caught up in Spyder world!

picked this up recently.  Only had 500 miles on it when I first saw it.  Now at 900m so still being run in.  Loving it even though I have to keep it below 4000 revs for a bit longer.  Gentian blue, 18 way seats, bendy headlights

Every time I’ve been in it there’s a smile on my face but it’s been very hard not to go above 4000 rpm

still getting used to the roof.  Out today.  On the way home we left the roof up.  Glad we did despite a dry forecast it poured down.

When you have to pull dented areas of grill to get the shape back with a bent end of a welding rod…. You would appreciate there effectiveness!

No question, the original design is flawed & some mesh is an essential mod. I just prefer it tucked away out of sight.

High lamda readings are often air leaks, but it would have to be before the sensor.

Thanks BBB. The tester seemed confident that the system looked ok, hence the electrical suggestions. But perhaps he wasn't making a thorough examination. Porsche offered to charge me two hours labour to investigate. I think my Indie will find it more reasonably.

very generic guess but I would say maf or cat(s) on the way out.  It could be a sensor but sensors tend read improbable things or stop working rather than read a bit wrong.

the specialist should be able to read live values a get a feel for the likelihood of a particular component.

Thanks Paul, I always try to prepare myself for visits to the garage. Some considerable expense sounds likely from your analysis.🙁

  8. By way of further info:-

MOT carried out by Porsche Portsmouth. Fast idle reading was 1.29, second reading 1.23. Engine temperature warm as I'd driven 20+ miles to the test. I run the car exclusively on Esso supreme fuel.

The car is already booked into Precision Porsche. I'm curious about a likely electrical fault, are we talking about a sensor?

  9. My 987.1 failed the MOT as Lamda readings were a little high. On inspection, the exhaust seems fine. Technician says it may be an electrical fault or problem with engine management ( no light showing).

What kind of issues might cause this? The car runs very nicely.

It's the Sunday night update 🤣

As per usual, didn't get as much done as I'd hoped!

Spent a frustrating few hours on Friday installing the wiper mechanism - it was quite fiddly and took a bit of head scratching to work out.  Got there in the end though!  Attached the tonneau cover (need to lift the roof part way).

Also had to modify the bonnet hinge slightly; note the patented bonnet prop

    IMG_4300

Door skin back off, ready to wire in the new handle (you can just about see the new wiper arm spindles).  Tested it and it works!

    IMG_4302

I had hoped I could work from this side to get the power feed, but annoyingly had to take the door card off.  You can see the door airbag canister - I have to admit I always look at these nervously...

    IMG_4304

Door card on work bench (freezer)to take the feed

    IMG_4305

Temporarily put the card back on to test and... doesn't work 🤬🤬🤬

My logic was to wire a feed from the door window so it would only work when the car is unlocked, however I hadn't realised you can't operate the windows with the ignition off.  So, you guessed it - now the exterior door handle only works if the ignition is on 🤣🤣  Back to the drawing board.

Kept myself busy by attaching and priming the bracket for mounting the new spoiler on, then tidied up all of the wiring I had left in the boot (along with the spoiler).  The spoiler is bonded onto this bracket which is in turn bolted to the existing motors.

    IMG_4303

Working out where to put the number plate light...  You can see the brake light holes in the vents - I've since tidied up the holes as they were bugging me!  Rear boot lid is also now hinged.

    IMG_4311

Light holder hollowed out, light attached and riv-nuts in.  They don't look level in this picture for some reason but I can assure you they are!  Also used some of the same rubber gasket from the screen to get provide a watertight seal to the body.

    IMG_4312

And as per usual, got carried away and attached the number plate (show plate of course - I also have standard colouring, but these suit the car so much more :D).  Anything I'm attaching will come off when it goes for spraying, but it's useful for working out proportions as I don't want to making mistakes once it's painted!

    IMG_4315

Access was a pain in the ass!  Since I took the photo I've heatshrunk the cable and zip-tied it to the chassis out of view (and debris).  I need extend the exhaust too so it clears the new body - not sure which design to go, maybe a single round pipe rather than the original twin?

    IMG_4314

It then leads me onto this - where do you think the reverse light should go?  1, 2, 3 or 4  The fog will go in the mirror image on the other side.  At the moment I think 1 looks the best, or 4...  3 is on the curve so the light will be on the p1ss unless I work out a way of levelling it. 2 might make the back look a bit cluttered.  Light is 90mm diameter circle with chrome edge to match the 356 original.

    IMG_4316

Started doing the same spacing out to the front - headlights temporarily in (they'll be a little higher when attached), bonnet handle on, grills and indicators on, number plate on (annoyingly drilled the holes in the wrong place - I assumed in the middle but they needed to be at the top to keep the plate straight 🤬 Will order a replacement soon).  You can also see the wiper spindles a bit better here.  Mounted the front valance as well, which was a bugger to do with limited access - looks much nicer now though!  The slats still need some sanding to be fair

    IMG_4317

    And finally...

    IMG_4318

There is the P O R S C H E badge to go on the front too, which will fill the space between the driving lamps and below the bonnet - I think without this it looks a bit empty.

This week I'm going to try and work out the door wiring (I think I've said that every update) then a bit more gapping of the bodywork, bond the front and rear completely down, get the doors skins on, trim the speedster humps, then I think, think, it's ready for painting 😎👍

    Enjoy your week everyone  👍

Brilliant stuff - it's taking shape so quickly - well done.

  12. The service warning now says 'Service due in 12 days'. Precision Porsche can't fit me in until early September and advise me there are no consequences for being a month late. (Not true with girlfriends IIRC).

I did change the oil mid way, so I'm guessing it's okay to delay. Any contrary views?

Lost price is the same, mandated by Porsche, but approach to discounts seems to vary.

Okay, that's clear - thanks. My car came with good mats & a set of genuine replacements. A month ago, after 18 months ownership I put the new ones in and parked the old ones in the garage for kneeling down comfort when polishing the lower aspects of the bodywork.

I will soon buy a new pair of mats in readiness for a time when I might need them ( a couple of years down the line). OEM is the only way to go - they're such good quality.

Have pushed the boat out and bought an OEM set from OPC Cambridge.  £100.  Pushed for discount but apparently can only do that on service parts not accessories 🤷‍♂️.  Still, it was less than I was expecting to pay inc discount based on reading round so will take it as a win.  Should arrive mid-next week.  Will report back!

You mentioned 'reading round'. Do you mean the OPC price varies at different dealerships?

  15. Such a good thread. The cost alone would stop most of us even considering this. But the courage of self assembly is a missing ingredient for me. Truly impressive.
