Gear box oil change thwarted - UK got different plug?!?

A friend changed the oil (am happy with 10 W 60 of the highest API spec, API SN) and then we realised that the plug is different in my 1999 2.5 Liter vs his LHD in Germany. Mine requires a star-like insert (he didn't have that size).

How very strange!

Removal of the cover was a hassle - and then I forgot the metal plate. Man, the wind noise has been bad. This plate must play a major role aerodynamically.

Q: could you tell me the size of the insert needed to loosen the gear box plug?

Q2: does anyone have a different plug, like they use on cars for the German market?

Cheers!

Have a look at this topic where I posted everything needed Gear Box Drain Plug. . The drain & filler plug (always try to undo filler first!!) will require either a 17mm allen socket or an M16 multispline socket (not torx).

I did this job.  Nice DIY.  Have the tool.

It's actually a common triple square VAG tool- used across the range.  Search for a 'triple square key' or see this... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BGS-VAG-Oil-Gearbox-Drain-Plug-M16-x-58-mm-Spline-XZN-Tamperpro-4356-/281386586706?hash=item4183f29252:g:6fIAAOSwn51UY-y3
