No one has mentioned under drive pulleys. ....light weight flywheeels....sports cats....

They all wake the car up quite nicely.

I undertstand lightweight flywheel causes damage i nthe long run and rattling sounds compared to a DMS

I wonder if sports clutch from sachs is a worthy upgrade?

The 2nd gear sync had started to fail as usual.

2nd gear failure is common on 986 gearboxes and is due to a design flaw with the selector mechanism. A replacement gearbox will have the same flaw. The only bullet proof solution is to have your gearbox rebuilt by a Porsche specialist who understands the design flaw and how to fix it. Just replacing the worn components will work for a while but the gearbox will fail in the same way eventually.  I had the same problem on my 986S several years a go and it eventually led to the car jumping out of 2nd gear when lifting off the accelerator. I took my 986S to Sports and Classic who were one of the first Porsche specialists to offer a proper rebuild and fix the selector flaw. It cost me around £1500 and 75k miles later the gearbox still feels as good as it was after the rebuild which is to say brilliant.

  • 10 months later...

Ancient post excavator here.

Mine is a manual 2000 3.2S with a stiff when cold 1-2-3 shift.

Am I correct in thinking this 'late' 986 has a G86/20, which could be swapped for a later G87/20(1) from a 987?

For better synchros etc, I know the inner CV flanges are different sized to the CV's (or shafts) from a 987 would need to be used, if swapping the box output flanges is not possible.

Is the shift the same? Or could 987 shifter & cables be swapped to overcome?

Are the mounts the same?

Look forward to anyone info!

Beers!

Sorry I don't know the answers to your questions.

But, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I changed my Knackered 2001 gearbox out for a second-hand 2003 one, obviously it fitted perfectly as it is also a G86/20. I don't know for sure but I think it is a definite possibility that Porsche had started to make a few mild modifications to improve the gearbox/synchros, quite possibly at the time of the facelift? and mine is still faultless almost two years after replacement.

Might be an easier option than trying to modify a G87 to fit your 2000 car?

Also, not sure that stiff changes are anything to be concerned about, it is the grinding and eventual blocking of the gears you should be worried about.

IIRC 986 and 987 engine and gearbox mounts interchangeable. As is the shifter. Not sure about cables. 986 cables not exactly unreliable so don't see the benefit of going different there.
