The November 2017 issue of this great mag has just covered electronic diagnostics on a 2000 plate 986 2.7 which is very in depth

the article covers everything from ailing coil packs to main cable starter motor issues and lots in between.

£4 from any good newsagents

well worth a read

Intrigued by this comment:- if the battery is disconnected or goes flat, a steering angle sensor calibration will be required - note that this can only be done with certain diagnostic tools.

I then googled this - (google is your friend) and found this: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=770011

(I know that relates to later cars and the Cayman, but is it similar for 986’s?)

Anyone had this issue/does this post battery disconnection...?

Looks to be a right pain if you disconnect or discharge your battery.

Can you not keep all these systems alive by plugging in an ecu memory saver?

I presume this only affects the later versions.. not the 986, the magazine article does not stipulate that whereas the link does.
