...who likes the look of amber bulbs behind clear lenses, or am I just strange? In practically every build thread they're swapped out for silver bulbs.

To each his own.  Why should my preferences have any influence on what you do, you paid for it.

It's not just the silver bulbs. For the complete non amber look you have to remove the orange lense inside the headlight. I think on the silver, black and blue cars it looks better without the amber. Yellow and red is ok.

I always thought those style lights were the perfect balance between clear and Amber.  Sadly as @edc mentioned these normally get modified to make all clear lights and resold

That's how I feel about them. Adds a bit of character to the front lights!

The proper amber lights can be modified to clear by grinding away the top layer of amber plastic. I don't know whether they still have the amber indicator reflector inside as well. For the facelift cars with clear lights, they all have the amber reflector inside the headlight unit so despite changing to silver bulbs will still have a tint of orange unless you get that amber reflector out.
