Albeyo
Hi , Iv recently picked up an old 2.5 boxter in good condition but needs a few bits doing, there is a rattle or knocking when driven over rough surfaces like gravel or even old road surface, it feels like it’s on all 4 corners though ? Any ideas please ? Thanks in advance
edc
Does it sound like snooker balls from the rear?
Albeyo
Not really, just like some sort of clunk as if something’s loose or worn It’s just passed it’s mot though so can’t see it being bushes
the baron
That age if it hasn’t already it will need a full suspension refresh, it can be done in stages and start with the most obvious things first such as coffin arms ball joints drop links etc, you will eventually cure your knocking. Albeyo
Ok thanks ??
Anker BS
Try the following: Find a bump that set off the rattle. Then try driving over the bump while accelerating, and then try going over it while braking. If the rattle disappears when accelerating and braking your trailing arm bushings are gone. Trailing arms are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.
Lennym1984
I'd try the drop links. They always tend to be set off by rough roads and they're cheap enough to do even if they're okay (if they're original they are bound to fail at some point)

edc
Then it's highly likely to be the rear arm known as tuning fork because of its shape.
Eddy555
This is the old vs new comparison of the bushes in my rear tuning forks. All the other rear suspension bushes seemed to be OK, or were no where near as bad as this. It should be relatively easy to change just these. toplad
Eddy, How many miles did you have on these?
Eddy555
No real idea on this but they could be original!?....the car's done 115k now and I've got no evidence that they have been changed in the past.

These will wear in as little as half that mileage if not less so you may well be replacing a replacement already.

Yeah I'd say that's more likely the case.
