Kev62
Hi all I have just noticed that the rear offside tyre on my 981 is wearing much faster across the first 30% of its surface area from the outside edge. Has anyone else had this problem and can anyone recommend the best wheel alignment system. To my knowledge the car has never been involved in any accidents. Thanks in advance Kev
GTSMarky
Kev - could this be down to a familiar piece of road where you might push on a bit more? NS Front tyres often wear more on the outside due to roundabouts for example. Failing that I'd take it to either OPC if in warranty or an independent Porsche specialist for an alignment check before putting new rubber on. Unless there is anything untoward you can screw up your geo by going over kerbs, potholes etc, thus not a warranty issue. If you know otherwise let me know as i had a similar issue last year
GTSMarky
You may be right, but I'd certainly ask the OPC first and maybe they'll discount the check if nothing untoward is found.. Worth a call for sure.
GTSMarky
plus you have it on record too just in case.

Worth a call for sure. Agree with this entirely especially if you've done very few miles and a recent purchase.
Kev62
Hi all Many thanks for your replies has anyone used kickfit they have a very modern lazer alignment set up which I used for my Landrover and found to be very good. Would the same system be ok for a Boxter?

Greenman
Have you checked both rear tyres, it seems to be normal for the outsides of the rear tyres to wear slightly faster than the inside edges. What mileage have the rears got on?
ATM
Can't you just swap them round?
Kev62
Maybe but problem is unless I take it off the rim it would still be on the outside Many thanks for your replies has anyone used kickfit they have a very modern lazer alignment set up which I used for my Landrover and found to be very good. ATM
Any alignment setup is better than none if it's out by a reasonable amount. The better equipment will just make the adjustment more accurate.
Carmine
Ideally you want someone who does mostly alignment work and someone who understands what the settings mean as opposed to someone who just gets all the numbers green and thinks that's good enough. have a look at alignmycar.com and see who is close by. PaulQ
Normal wear would be for the inside of the rears to wear slightly faster then the outside. Sounds like you've got a bit of toe out on one side, which is causing that tyre to wear quicker on the outside. More important is the person doing the alignment then the equipment itself. If you know what you are doing, then some string & a spirit leval can get you a decent geo.!

You might even be able to do a crude check on toe with the rears using a straight edge of cardboard or something reasonably firm and look where this edge meets the bodywork when pressed firm up against your wheel face and held horizontal with the ground. Obviously I'd just get it checked properly myself. Prices vary and yes you need someone with experience although if they have an accurate machine and you want factory spec then that's less important for you especially if it's out by some margin.
