That lump in your stomach moment...

...no, not a dodgy curry but when your Boxster is going into the local specialist :D

It’s going in for a service, drivers side window switch, exhaust studs, brake check (juddering under heavy braking) and coolant pipes (pending inspection).

Really hoping it’s in the £££, not ££££ range! Eek!

Oh dear😂

A lot  depends on what is up with your brakes, service will be a set price. Window switches aren’t to expensive and about an hour to fit, the exhaust studs could be quite labour intensive but cheap parts. As for the coolant pipes I haven’t got a clue🤔

Re the brake issue, it’s had new front discs and pads (previously thought that they might be warped) but that seemed to only be a temporary fix. Then the mating surfaces were totally cleaned to no avail. Third time lucky I hope!

Coolant pipes require front subframe to be dropped and I’ve heard figures up to £1k  😮

I had coolant pipes and all brake discs and pads replaced on my last Box in one go - not cheap but not too eye watering either. Good luck!

I had my coolant pipes done last year. Came in at just over &500 total.

Those figures don't sound too extortionate actually. A previous indie told me it was around the £1k mark?! They may have been chancing it based on me being a newbie Porsche owner at the time.

I am hoping that the exhaust studs and new gasket will result in a tiny bit more power/noise on account of a slight blow.

Omg! Thought mine was bad, cost me £1700 on suspension in first month.

Just got the quote today for having my coolant pipes done and can’t complain to be fair. Guess it depends where you took it. I was advised a couple of years ago they were corroded and hey have been loosing a bit over the last couple of months. I guess it depends which pipes need doing. Mine just needed the front to rear aluminium ones and a couple at the back to the engine. I think all the ones at the front can be a tad pricey though. Also discs and pads are cheap as chips but it depends on which brand you choose.

Good luck

Well I heard from the service manager and it’s not great news...coolant pipes and water pump need to be done as a priority. Just shy of £2k inc VAT fitted then there’s the service and other sundries...gulp.

Whilst it sounds a lot, I'm of the opinion if a car is a long term keeper than I'd rather have the work done and enjoy her. No second hand car is going to be trouble free, as things fail eventually.

That seems a very high price for coolant pipes and a water pump. Did you take it to an OPC, are you in London? Probably worth getting a quote elsewhere. This is the sort of job when taking it somewhere like Revolution for the day can make sense.

No - a specialist in Sussex.

If I was to take it up to Revolution I’d have to factor in fuel, hotel, days off work etc. So it would probably be similar all told. Plus the inconvenience!

Fair enough, it just seems way over the top for the work involved unless they are replacing a lot more pipes than usual. They've drained down the cooling system for the pipes already, so changing the pump is only an extra hour and a half tops plus £160 for an OEM pump.

Coffee boxes are where you put those little pods in for whatever flavour you prefer and then once warmed up the car can deliver a coffee to your spec while moving.

It's a very rare option :-)

I think they’re replacing absolutely all the pipes.

As per my original post. If it is all the pipes then that’s not too unreasonable if it includes a service and a pump. Mine was about 230 labour (but I had some other bits done) and a couple of hundred parts ex vat. That was just the front to backs pipes and a couple at the rear to the engine. I think the front ones are on special offer for about £450 at the moment from d911. Worth it in the long run for peace of mind. Will do the fronts myself at some point I guess. I guess it’s just an age and road salt related thing.

Good luck with the rest of it it’s generally very well made IMHO.

Well I picked it up this morning, wallet a bit lighter but good to have the car back.

Engine note is smoother with the exhaust flange bolts and gasket replaced, drivers window is now operational thanks to a new switch pack. Water pump and coolant pipes are good for piece of mind. I saw some photos of some of the pipe couplers before they got replaced and its a wonder they were still in one piece.

One or two other bits to get sorted in the near future but the car got a good welcome home drive this morning.

In a month's time, the big bill will be forgotten as you drive along a perfect country lane. Enjoy her now 👍🏼
