D - Day

So today was Decision Day, Car was booked in to Indy to find out why it was rocking side to side when at idle and also overall "Health Check" so outcome is as follows;-

The cam solenoid was kaput not doing anything and they are pretty sure thats the problem. Serious corrosion to brake pipes he said how it passed MOT 4 weeks ago was alarming also the play on the drivers side track rod end should have been at the least an advisory (the near side had been changed) The plug tubes leaking (I had suspected that anyway) reckons the coils fine no cracks. So he says the cam job is fairly involved 5/6 hours (I don't know, only know that it is way beyond what I can do). Beyond that he reckons the car is okay (or at least until something else crops up!) So heres what they have quoted.......

Cam timing adjuster solenoid, total £974+vat (includes all 6 spark plug tubes and seals, new chain, slippers, sealer, seals, cam bungs. Tensioner washers, and solenoid)

Brake pipes all affected £280+vat

Track rod end £74+vat

Wheel alignment full 4 wheel laser alignment £95+vat

I think my regular mechanic could do most of it apart from the cam stuff as they said you needed specialist tools etc.

So what do you think I don't know if the costs are reasonable any advice would be appreciated. Do I fix it or do I move on that is the question.

Track rod and most brake pipes should be DIY but you'll need a flare tool and even with that and materials it would be a fraction of £280+VAT.  Otherwise its a case of what you want to put into this car, and if you move on what you might need to put into a different car to get to where yours is now?  At least you'd know the cam chain, seals, slippers etc are sound for another 80-100k miles....

Yee hah, finally managed to go for a drive yesterday albeit a steady trot as one last job remains! So with summer hols all done and kids back to school (phew),car had been lain up. But have now replaced ;-

track rod ends, engine mounts, front bump stops, front and rear lower (coffin) arms, rear shockers, front strut mounts, brake pipelines, s/plugs + tubes and seals, full coolant change.

Cam solenoid (bank 1-3) replaced  and also the roof switch had stopped working so thats been replaced as well.

Also found out carpets were soaked and hadn't realised, so all carpets out  and dried out, found that the drip tray on the passenger side had a split in it (arrgh) so thats replaced as well. Also invested in a half cover as it has to stay out (poor thing).

So booked in for a laser wheel alignment Today and then (please God 🙏) no more hiccups for a bit ,oh and a bit of sun please is that too much to ask.

So had the laser alignment done and everything appears to be running smoothly, so time for a proper drive came back looking like a Cheshire cat (sun was even out so top down and away we went). Absence makes the heart grow fonder, a few weeks not being able to go for a drive and then finally back on the tarmac it was like having a new toy. I can't stop grinning!😁

Glad to hear its back on the road and your enjoying it, so many people would have given up on it and passed it on, so well done you

I can't help but love it and lavish attention (and unfortunately cash) upon it! Thanks for your comments.
