½cwt
Some (well a lot) of my interior black plastic parts are looking somewhat shabby, scuffed, scratched or worn like the centre console, the moulding around the door handles and the door bin covers/elbow rests. I know some owners have painted some of these the body colour or a suitable paint finish or vinyl wrapped or even carbon fibre effect, but what is the factory finish that wears off? I have bought a couple of OE parts and they do not have the finish (just the mould finish on the surface from what I can tell), such as ashtray delete and CD storage delete bins but the finishes don't quite match. Essentially the questions are; Is possible to strip this finish without damaging the plastic underneath? Is it possible to reapply the same type of finish to get a 'new' look? If so, is it a DIY or specialist job?
Lonewolfgjp
The original finish is a soft touch plastic, which wears off over time and easily scraped. I don’t think you can remove it without causing some damage to the finish underneath. This is why a lot of people paint these parts or have them retrimmed. I did try to refinish a few plastic bits of trim on my 986 with varying levels of success. I think the closest I came to the factory look was to lightly sand and remove the coating and then use a plastic primer followed by a black paint and a Matt lacquer to protect the finish. I used this on the door bin lids and door handle trims and it looked very good 👌
