My sincere apologies for that but with this Corona you might read about it for a bit longer. You see, both, my wife and I are key workers, unlike her who can do most of her work from home I have to go out and see people, I have 'lots' of protection, gloves and alcogel, no masks or anything, so am at high risk of catching the bug. I find it a bit hard to live on £92 a week so the 1K - 3K that the repair might cause can be used in a better way when I a lay on my back.

My apologies but please bear with me 😜

Hi Freeman

Thank you to you and your family for the hard work at this awful time be safe

Hi guys.

First, thank you, but I don't think that I deserve any special thank you's.  We don't work for the NHS or any of the other emergency providers. My wife works as a Transport Manager to a refuse collection company, so a bit more headache as people get sick, lorries get sick and more waste is produced.

I Normally work as a QC inspector for a Gas company, inspecting other people' work. This function was deemed as not crucial so I was moved to another department, carrying safety inspections at people's homes, already found some dangerous stuff.

I think that I had the bug early January.  If true, I am fine, if not then there isn't much that I can do, if I get it I get it.

In a funny way we are very lucky. Many people are facing hardships and are very worried about the future as they see their life savings and work disappearing while at the same time we are at 'as normal' situation. This is my 3rd. or 4th. carrier and the most unglamorous of the lot but it is the steadiest and the most secure, so, I am not an hero, just a very lucky guy.

Keep safe and look after yourself.

Took my car today to an independent specialist shop that is willing to carry out the gearbox repair as the specialist garage that I used to use refused to carry out the work. The car had a minor service and all other faults that were flagged by the original garage were looked at and classified as 'Non Urgent' or 'No problem'. After a test run the gearbox fault was diagnosed to be a torque converter but it was advised to leave it as is until it gets worse, as a precaution, I was asked to come back during the week to allow the gearbox software to be reloaded just in case something went wrong.

I can agree to leaving the torque motor now you know what the problem is and live with if it, unless you need to get to RMS OR IMS then time to have a look at it. Interesting to see if software has an effect I look forward to your findings

S/W might be interesting especially as Audi had some issues with it. I have looked my engine s/n and it seems that I have the larger IMS bearing so it means an engine work, as the engine is in a very good condition there is no need to do it at the moment. However, once the gear box is out I probably will opt for a full O/H as the labour cost of removing and re-installing the box is a fair chunk of the total repair cost. One job that I still want to do although wasn't flag as urgent is to replace the caliper tubes, the rears are corroded, this will lead to brakes fluid change (X2 years now) and refurbishment of the wheels.

  • 3 weeks later...

Have visited the garage yesterday and had the s/w reloaded, the good news that there were no error codes or any other nasties, the weird news was that the car didn't know where it is as the country information was missing.

Yesterday after the update I drove the car about 20 miles and today been to Brighton a round trip of about 200 miles and 31.5 mpg. Unsurprisingly the gearbox issue still exist but we already know that this is a torque converter problem yet the car feels much smoother and nicer to drive. Prior to the update the gears were a bit notchy when they move up or down, now it is smooth and  more responsive than before.

In 3 weeks the car go back for new caliper tubes at the back, brake fluid replacement and wheels refurbishment and new bolts.

Hi Freeman

Great you have a positive that the car feels better with the gear change as you say no surprise the torque converter has not gone away. Since I had my gearbox oil changed and the weather has improved. I’ve been in the great you can’t go anywhere welsh lockdown, annoying but we did spike later than the rest of the uk up north. As the sun was out went on a slightly longer journey to take my mum’s essential shopping, and like you the torque converter problem is still there but less annoying or because I know what it is now I’m comfortable with it.

Stays in 4th a bit longer now and less surging under no load when rev needle jumps as  said before I’ve never had felt the is a problem with gear changes so I’ll definitely live with it for the summer. Hopefully I will be allowed out further soon and can see how it is on a good long journey. Definitely think about having the s/w reloaded but not sure it give anything but nothing to lose.  MOT is now due October so will see how that goes and think about what to do with gearbox

Freeman thanks keeping us updated
