Jackrabbit
I have 3 keys for my car. Only one was fully functioning when I bought it. Recently I started having issues with the fully working key and when I went to the dealership for a windshield replacement, they reprogrammed it for me. That worked for about two weeks. They have since offered a key replacement and programming for $528.00US installed (which they claim is at cost). I seem to be getting along nicely without the convenience of the remote feature. I manually lock the doors and when opening with the key, the only inconvenience I have to deal with is having to insert the key in the ignition and turn to position 1 within 10 seconds to avoid the alarm going off. My questions are: 1) has anyone else been going without the remote feature long term ? and 2) other than convenience is there anything else that I am missing by not having the remote feature ? I would much rather put that $500 toward new shocks, etc. and put the key replacement on the back burner. Keep all four on the road ...... tommy z
½cwt
The price in USD looks a little higher than the price in GBP which is in the Region of 250-300. In the UK the car is fitted with an extra alarm siren which is loud so most try to fix the problem than risk triggering in and p***ing off the neighbours. Read up on this article about the 986/996 alarm system from a UK independent who has extensively investigated the system: JMG Porsche - Independent Porsche Specialists - Porsche 996 and 986 Boxster Alarm primer
Menoporsche
@Jackrabbit, have you asked around? We'd expect a high price, but we do know that prices still vary around the UK, eg people report quotes of 250-400. GBP. Otherwise many on here have decided they can live with just the one remote key, it's been discussed here a few times. So I think you can indeed live with the inconvenience, if you choose to put the money elsewhere.

As it's a 2nd car and only does about 1500 miles a year its not too much of a problem. If it was a daily driver it could be rather irritating though. S8ked
Hello from another PNW'er! Yes, I have been using my car without the remote feature for 4 years. When I purchased my car it came with only one Remote Key that was falling apart and was taped together! Like you I visited my local Porsche dealers service department and almost needed to be picked up off the floor when they told me the cost of another remote key! However, the parts department was more understanding and told me about what they called the basic key which sounds like what you have. The basic key has 2 part numbers one for the blade and one for the head. 996-637-041-01 and 996-538-531-00 The basic key is just that, a key it has no remote buttons, but does have a LED light in the head. Like you I manually lock and unlock the doors and use the levers on the sill to open the frunk and trunk. I don't have any issue with the alarm going off after 10 seconds, it works normally turning off when I unlock the doors and setting when I manually lock the doors. The keys did have to be programed to the car by the Porsche dealer for which they charged me 1/2 hour labor. All totaled I got 2 basic keys and programming for $250.US Perhaps your keys are not properly programmed to the car? Kevin
986T8
Just unplug the power to the siren, it’s left of the battery.
