sa utah
Afternoon all. I've not been able to drive my car for a couple of months and this morning went to give it a run and I can't select any gear except 5th ! I can drop into neutral and that's all. Absolutely no issues before and all looks good below around the linkage too. Any help appreciated !
sa utah
I should add that the gear stick won't move left at all. I can only move from 5th downwards.... When in 5th I can stall the car by lifting the clutch and when in neutral i can take my foot off and it idles as expected..... So the lever is stuck. I'd have thought if the cables had come off the lever would flop about.
½cwt
Take the gear knob and leather cover off and take a look at the shifter mechanism. Has a bearing or sider in there broken? Usually the 'neutral' plane would be 3rd/4th, so 5th only implies there is a side force or blockage preventing it getting to the normal neutral position. Philc
might not be your issue but something else to check
Guest
When my cables went she was between 2nd and 3rd. I could only manage 3rd and 4th and like you couldn't move left or right. How were the gears last time you drove her?
sa utah
It drove perfectly last time without any drama at all. Will get under it tomorrow for a look at the linkages. Perhaps if mine had a 6th gear it would move from 5 to 6. As it is I can only move from 5th down (its a 5 speed box) to where it would normally stop. It doesn't move to the natural neutral centre point but is out of gear at least.
½cwt
The more I read the more I'm thinking the across gate cable has broken or popped off, most likely at the gearbox end.
Philc
That video above is fixing a stiff left to right in neutral, by means of a seized pivot on a bracket. Maybe yours is seized solid? Also did you leave it in fifth gear when you parked it? How did it get stuck there?
sa utah
Well the across gate cable is still on but the linkage is frozen. I don't have much time and it's raining now but i've spayed it with penetrating fluid and will look at it when i get a chance.
Philc
I would say its replacement part time, as per the video.
sa utah
And that part is £422 plus VAT ! Will try my best to clean up the existing part first.....
edc
I would definitely get that part off, wire brush it and the area!
sa utah
Total result this morning. More penetrating oil this morning and the lever was moving albeit very stiff. Cleaned it all off with degreaser again and lubed it up... All good now.. Saved £500.00 so very happy. Might be worth you guys lubing your own up to prevent this. Thanks for all your help as usual 1
Ninesomething
Grease your linkage. No-one ever bothers but it's v important.
sa utah
The offending item. For clarity this is best accessed by removing the drivers side (UK) rear wheel and and you§ll see it towards the back of the car. As you will see mine looks like it's from the Titanic. https://photos.app.goo.gl/GSy51ahenan4Ur3aA
