  1. For a salesman's motorway hack it's fine.

For a sports car which should be represent a bit of fun - should have some colour at least.   Doesn't have to be full on like the tw*ts in yellow cars but Murky Silver? Primer Grey? Invisible Durge?   Those colour codes shouldn't even be allowed on the options list.

In my experience, it's always best to call Mark - he's often too busy to keep up on his emails. 😉

I'm also guessing that pries will fluctuate due to price of donner engines of the 3.8/40 be it 981/718 or 991 lumps

He got straight back to me, no issues.  It's just not something he's done before.

Mark Shead is your man for that😃

I contacted Mark about this just out of interest, it's not something he's done and he's not aware of anyone in the UK doing it.

I'd have thought there might be a market for it, if it was a straight "give us your car, £12k and a week" drive in drive out service.

I'd definitely have thought there would be a market for 718 to 981 engine upgrade conversions but that would be a lot more work 😁

  4. They've written 20in Alloy Wheels - Carrera S, but they're not are they?  Or if they are I wonder what I've got.

PSE + Leather dash, winner winner :rocks:

Maybe the scuffed bit can be replaced.  I know there are "smart" repairs available but they've never been that smart in my experience.

The plate looks familiar but I know nothing about it, it looks like a nice example, very smart in black. Priced on the higher side but it's stunning, good spec missing pasm but not a deal breaker.

If and only if.....your budget is up there and they can't discount the car I'd be tempted to look at a GTS if you are willing to pay almost £40k. Some red and white ones around in the mid to late 40s now. You'll have the cost of funding it but potentially a safer bet in terms of depreciation vs the top end of the S market.

Aaaah.... so that devil on my shoulder who whispers in my ear whilst browsing the classifieds has a name.  And the devil's name is Daz 😈

Spotted car is £37k, well that's as near as dammit £40k. If I'm spending £40k then that includes everything up to £49k...  but then if I'm looking at a GTS then let's just have a quick look at a Spyder or a 718 GTS 4.0...  ooh a bit of a stretch but that's what finance is for right?

Don't listen to him Bandit, save yourself, it's too late for me I've been down this road too many times.... 😅

  6. Sounds like quite a smash, must've been shaken up.  The best news as others have said, is that you lived to fight another day...and hopefully get yourself into another car before too long if the right spec comes up.

The main downer with the insurance is that regardless of who's to blame they are a bunch of brstds.  I've yet to experience a single incident where no blame has been proved and it doesn't end up costing.  I'm not going to doom my 20+ years NCB but from previous non-fault claims for my wife and daughter, even a stone-chipped windscreen, every time the premium has been loaded up afterwards.  That "risk" cloud follows you around for a bit even if the car was affected whilst you weren't even in it 😒

I went to several international road safety conferences for work. I remember one comment that a big chunk of biker deaths was not 19 year olds as we might think but men over 40, who had got their licence at 18 and an accompanying small engined bike, left it for 20 years during marriage and kids, and then treated themselves to a nice 600+… without understanding just how much more powerful bikes had become over the years.

Next time I’ll propose a survey of spouses.

Yeah, I can understand that. For me it’s been a continuous thing for thirty years and riding for about 100 days a year so I’m not “born again” as such. Admittedly on a 125 now but previously up to 750s faster than the 900 I mentioned above.

However the wife threat of death is very real.

  8. Funny how the topic of bikes has cropped up.

For months I’ve been looking at what £10k would upgrade me to from my car, the answer (in Boxster terms) is nothing, I haven’t found anything I’d even do a straight swap for.

However it has occurred to me that £10k would easily buy me an upgrade to my Vespa and a GPZ900R which I used to idolise when I had a GPZ500S. The only problem is that that I’d be killed. Not by the bike but by my wife.

I have looked at yours chap, it looks mega but for now I’m searching for a 3.4. I note not many seem to have the PSE from current checking I’d say less than 10%?

wonder if a 2.9 with some mods might be an option as in get a better optioned base model?
maybe I’ll keep things open then…

I can definitely see the appeal with a 987 2.9.

I also fully understand wanting a 3.4.  Whilst it may not be real world quicker apart from on the dual carriageway or track (easily offset by a better driver in a 2.7) it’s a case of more=more playing on your mind.  I do wonder if I had a 3.4, or a 3.8 as was suggested, then would the gun be over quicker?  There’s something to be said for whizzing up and down that PDK.

I did try a 3.4 before the 2.7 and don’t feel shortchanged with my choice. But a half hour test drive is different from living with it. And like I said, more is more 😉

My advice, find a nice S in a colour you can live with, PDK or manual is up to you, but you won't be disappointed with PDK, manual ratios might annoy you.

    Get PSE  - essential

PASM feels nice and 10mm lower

    PCM 3.1 with nav

    Extended leather

Chrono is nice to have but not essential.

    Anything else is a bonus.

Residuals look solid to me, the only alternative is an £80k 4.0l 718!

I like how one of the essentials is one you ditched 😂

However, yes that is the essentials list for sure.

I put mine up on the for sale section a few days ago which has a load of options, but it’s lowly, weedy, 2.7.  Luckily on a couple of runs I’ve been on with S’s and a 4.0 GTS they must’ve all been kindly holding back because no-one was ever pulling away 🤔

I may be wrong but didn’t the base 981 have more (or the same) power as the previous S and less weight?  Though PDK added it back maybe…

It maybe an idea to ring some of the better dealerships in your area and ask who they use or if you’ve got any friends that have used somewhere by you and recommend them. I would of recommended Lepsons but apparently they’re not so good these days, shame as they were my go to for my bits and pieces 👍

Used them for the wife’s Qashqai wheel last year and they were perfect, couldn’t have been better.

Handily they are 10 mins from me as well.

Had this on the old z4, actually found it a bit awkward and ended up coding it off

Yes, it was on the brand new Cayenne I borrowed a few weeks back.

I didn’t know about it until stuck down a tight narrow country lane and having to reverse back about 50 yards - adjusted the mirror as I thought someone had pointed it at the floor (or the ditch in this case). Had to readjust fwd and back and the bloody mirror kept moving.

I thought it had gone wrong until I witnessed move later in the day when I put in reverse and then clicked what was going on. I’m glad mine doesn’t have that option.

I know they are not directly comparable but to me that means someone could spend 10k putting a 3.8 engine in and get the grunt without the fussy roof. Yes I know there are other points like lightweight panels and glass etc, but my suspicion is that most drivers couldn’t tell those, the impact of them on a 1300kg car is subtle.
    Interesting proposition.

Do you think that would actually be feasible?

If I were to say to a professional firm, here's my base 981 and 10 bags.  Fit me a 3.8 with a manual gearbox, but leave everything else as it is.

If I add 10k to my car as a purchase price I couldn't get a GTS, or even an S, which would be as good.

Better to not take the bait than to be out accelerated on a dual carriageway by a Fiesta ST

Indeed !!  You jest but I've been overtaken by either a Polo or a Golf (no interest but def a VW small hatchback) which sounded like it'd just come off the racetrack.  Didn't look anything special, just lowered, fat exhaust which blew out big puffs of smoke on the upchanges.  The main thing though was that I wouldn't have stood a chance if I wanted to, it was seriously shifting.  Looked like it was about ready to explode though...

  15. One downside of Boxster ownership as compared to some previous sports cars (lotuses mainly) is there's a definite shift in everyone wanting a race it seems.

Whilst I agree that the bright yellow paint and ===PORSCHE=== written down the side might encourage every yoof with a Fiesta ST to prove something, I've had similarly vibrant sports cars before without noticing it as much.  I'm just about to go for a drive and I can guarantee I'll experience a few raspy exhausts going by like their ar*e is on fire.

For reference, I only ever enjoy a spirited drive when I'm away from other lunatics... I never get baited... one lunatic on a section of road is quite enough.

  16. I’ve got PTV on my 2.7, which I initially thought was a bit of a waste of an option tick maybe.

But a couple of times in the wet it has felt like it was pushing a little oversteer accelerating out of a roundabout - a little rear wheel “push” similar to a couple of LSD equipped RWD cars I’ve had before.  Surprising, but in a good way.  If it makes me or the car feel more heroic then I’m happy with the option.

  17. Having built two cars myself I fully applaud these spurts of progress. It’s a lot longer and more effort than it takes to type and photograph.

  18. I was initially more concerned with WTF Porsche were thinking in fitting a centre section that appears to be the most un-aerodynamic design possible.

Then having thought about it more I realised that once the pocket of air pressure is full / maxxed out then maybe it helps somehow to flow the air somewhere or break it up for less resistance.  I don't know, intuitively it looks wrong but they must know what they're up to I guess.

I've been tempted to put grille over that section for looks alone, though as I haven't put my condenser grilles back on since the service I doubt I'll bother.  I prefer the look of them without.  The wife's Qashqai doesn't have grille in front of the rad and intercooler and that's on one of the biggest selling cars out there and people don't fit grilles to those.  It's under the number plate so the "hole" isn't massively higher than those on the Box.

I got bored after about 180 pages of manuals, but there are lost of clever and equally overengineered things the newer cars do.  Many are linked nd some are even temperature dependent.

Eg every fifth time you shut down - the wipers will self wiggle to ensure they have a clean surface

Damn, I'd noticed the wiper wiggle sometimes but hadn't thought about it.  Now I'm going to be counting... and worrying if it hasn't wiggled on the 6th go.

Out of interest, when you first go to the car and press the unlock, or maybe it's when you first open the door (can't remember) it makes a whirring sound a bit like a fuel pump.  Is it the fuel pump?  Seems an odd time to be priming pressure.  If you just went to the car to get something out then it's half a second of inefficiency, which I know Porsche detest.

Looks better de-badged completely IMHO. I did it on my last car and it looked awesome:

    👍

Going naked gets my vote, but I haven't had the bottle to take my own badges off...  I have made a template with some bits of paper (think along the lines of brass rubbing) so I could remove them and stick them back in the exact same place if it didn't work out.

As I'm considering selling at some point it's probably a stupid idea to do it now though.  Should've done it when I first bought it.

I think I was luckily. I think it failed on idle  / start up.

I stopped to rescue a lamb ( seriously!!)  that had escaped from a field and was stuck on the outside of the gate. So  I stopped, ran back and got it into the field. When it restarted, I got the dash warning.

Had it let go at 4-6k RPM, the damage could have been catastrophic 😱

Perhaps the good deed saved me!

I once had an issue with the belt on a VX220 Turbo, was whanging it along and fluffed an up-change.  At that instant a red light appeared on the dash so my first thought was "oh cr*p, I over-revved it and stuffed the engine".

However in the few seconds it took to pull over I'd remembered that it would be rev limited so the only way to over-rev it would be to jam in a lower gear rather than just revving up in neutral - and also the fact that everything seemed to be working normally and what I thought was an engine light was just the battery light.

Getting under the car by the roadside the serpentine belt had disappeared !!  No sign of it on the road, inside the engine bay, on the undertray - it had just disappeared 🤔

Drove home as normal, waiting for it to conk out but made the 40 min journey back without an issue.  Checked the voltage and it was on 11.3 which I thought was surprisingly good though I didn't have fans / lights / wipers running.

A good result there for you @moonshine but it's what I would've hoped for.  Ridiculous if they can turn down a warranty claim for something that isn't replaced as a service item.
