All to do with engine friction. Coasting in gear down an incline will slow the car down quicker due to engine braking, then the amount of extra fuel to maintain or get it back up to speed would be more than fuelling tick-over whilst coasting. Like stop/start, it could possibly have saved enough fuel on test to drop the vehicle's CO2 emissions, tax band, and make the fictitious economy figures look better.

I find the mode unnerving in autos, and if you do it in a manual you could be considered not to be in full control of the vehicle.

Notching neutral still leaves the engine running with idle fuel.  If you 'coast' with transmission engaged down a hill the fuel supply is off completely on most fuel injected cars.  Also being out of gear is not good practice.

Hmmm that’s interesting, so the fuel is entirely cut on coasting in gear (in a manual) - so I could be using more fuel on my economy drive.

If that’s actually the case then why do Porsche do exactly that? There would be nothing to gain.

    .... with engine off...

That’s coasting mood for ya, I think that’s great. I do it manually in the wife’s car now, notch it into neutral if I’m going into town (downhill all the way).

Economy isn’t as important to some with a sports car of course, but it is a definite benefit when you can cruise from Kent to Wales at 40+ mpg and then aim for sub 20mpg on the interesting roads. No point wasting money on the motorway which is what most cars I’ve had would do.

At last year’s Dragons Throat run it saved me the cost of the airbnb and evening meal. That’s very worthwhile.

Yes, map updates need an activation code.

At an OPC this would be done with a PIWIS, other methods appear to be out there...

Yeah, mine did - the guy needed to know the VIN and then he created the necessary files for me to download.  Mine was USB stick, no DVDs.  I didn't trust the time / physical element of the DVD method.  Plus it was cheaper and I'm nothing if not a cheapskate 😂

Had similar on an MOT years ago - mate had 2 FS1E's - one really nice (that was being fixed after an unfortunate incident with a Panda Pepsi lorry) and a ratter that had seen him through.

We took both for an MOT - nice one passed no issue, ratter failed on rear tyre, lights, buckled rear wheel and rear shocks - MOT tester said " I am going for lunch, if you want to borrow my tools and swap the bits over while I am gone I will retest when I get back - save you going all the way home... if you buy my lunch for me"

10 quid well spent ( was a few years ago)

So a FS1E was wiped out by a Fizzy ?

Not sure I ever rode a legal one :rolleyes_anim:

Yes looks very much like you have the extended leather on that picture.

Can’t see the attraction myself,  not saying it isn’t nice but on a sports car having leather on somewhere you never interact with is so low down my priority list.  The sport design wheel on the other hand, yes please.

So you're saying you don't sit in traffic stroking the stitching lovingly?  🤔

Extended leather very nice, lovely option that :)

A sport design steering wheel and sport chrono retrofit would finish that off spec wise for me.

Yes, Sport design wheel would also have to be on my "next car list".  Not fussed about my Sport Chrono though, I'll get a flatblade screwdriver and prise it off the dash for the classifieds 😆

You have your dash and door cards covered in leather yes, it was an option and must have imho.

    This.

Two items at the top of my next car list (if it's another 981), PSE + Leather dash.  Even though they made the leather feel like plastic to some extent, don't know why they couldn't have added a little bit of squish.

... I'll check with the MOT place when I get to that stage (I also fully expect it to fail the first time due to some grey areas, so the first test for me will be for clarity)...

When I built my Westfield in the late 80's it was a doodle, no SVA.  When it came to finishing my Fisher Fury in 2005 I was told that you take it to the first SVA to pick up your "to-do" list.

That's even taking into account of all the bits which are added to take into account of the test.  Borrowed hideous mirrors, headlights on weird mounts, standard Sierra steering wheel.  The tester even said "I suppose all this stuff will fall off the car once you've passed" 😅

I wave to everyone in my 981 except the SUV and Taycan community, it's not the done thing in those circles.

I'll be honest, I tend not to even notice SUVs generally - sometimes I spot the Porsche badge but I think I'm mentally blinkered to them, it's not deliberate.  They are just background noise.

    holy moly 519 mile range!

I'd need a 130 litre tank for that

Yeah, it’s the most I’ve seen by a long way. Filled up to the brim, directly onto the motorway and straight into 45mph slow but constant traffic.  Leaving the station it was about 380-ish I reckon.

@Davey P Just realised from your screen shot that you’ve 64L tank in your 981. Learn something new every day…

75 litre tank here.  And for the sake of the thread, despite it showing altitude on this photo my 2013 has voltage as an option.

I did 520 miles Sat/Sun visiting Anglesey with friends for a stop over. Roads were ok but a combination of traffic and average speed cameras did spoil some of the driving.

Excellent, going on my 5th trip in this car to that neck of the woods at the start of May.  Clinging to the coast heading north to Angelsey and a wiggly scenic drive back to Kent via the Peak District.  Three days so quite chilled.

Again, some sections have to be mindful of speed cameras but there's always going to be some fun roads off the main A roads for them to completely cover with scameras.

Taking my dad so it won't be a hoon as such.  Though last time I think it was a bit too spirited for him going from Pencraig to Bala.  Whilst gripping with white knuckles he said "whilst this is fun I'd hate for you to damage your car".  I used my Kimi quote Leave me alone, I know what I'm doing.  Though I'm sensible enough never to use the "Watch this" phrase  🤣

  14. Not today, but Sunday afternoon.  75 miles, two hours, first solid top-down drive of the year.  When I've been available before it's been chucking down.

Spotted two other Boxsters, both roof up (which I never judge btw) but neither returned a wave.  Near home I spotted a 911 GT3, didn't bother with a wave as I figured no point - the guy gave me a thumbs up thus marking me out as a non-responding to*ser :rolleyes_anim:

  15. A touch of gold, lovely - looking forward to seeing daylight photos of it.

Coincidentally this Lamborghini I just painted has a lot of gold in it.  Looks Kermit like, but where the light hits it really reflects as gold.  Couldn’t replicate it for the picture, there’s gold in the mix but it was too subtle to show up.

I use the patio cleaner attachment and just turn it upside down under the car - simple bit of jet washing - when I can be bothered.

Good idea, though the jets on that are a bit forceful aren't they?

I know the high pressure lance (with the ball in the end) can be vicious, I managed to get a red circular stripe pattern up my leg once, stung like mad for the rest of the day.

  17. Spent a good 2+ hours a couple of weeks ago jetwashing the underside in case of any road salt, a dab of ACF50 where appropriate, etc.  Looking sparkly clean, didn't have a chance to drive apart from a quick dry off round the block.

First time out, an emergency trip to Bluewater to pick up a cookie (don't ask) and of course it was chucking it down and with some dirty rain as well.  I'm thinking of giving up cleaning it, feels like I have to do it after every outing.  Just let it build up the filth over the years and then get it detailed professionally when it comes to sell it 😄

The trader must have bought that car very cheaply - even with the Classic interior and relatively high miles it looks suspiciously well priced compared to other cars, particularly given the time of year.  I wonder if there is more to the story.

It's only a few thousand miles more than the £69,500 one at Porsche Mid-Sussex, literally just down the road a bit.  If I was in the market for one I'd definitely be looking at both to see where a £10k difference comes from.

As much as I personally prefer the 981 over earlier model Boxsters I think when it comes to the Spyder I prefer visuals of the older version.  Am I alone in that afflication?

Hi gentlemen, thank you so much for all the info. I've driven a Boxster 987.1 2.7 5 speed. My father in law lets me drive his on the Nurburgring as he lives close. So its been an aspirational car for some years now.

I'm entirely happy with 2.7 and genuinely don't need 3.4. My road to work consists of a very twisty, undulating, gorgeoes 12 miles, then an often mundane cruise for another 18 miles. Currently driving a 2.0 mx5 which is as quick as I need on the roads I travel...although there are some nice corners I'd love to see how much more quickly they could be taken.

I rarely get the roof down and maintaining a cloth roof in a damp Scottish climate isn't my idea of fun.

Heated seats are the number one choice of option I look for. Manual is desired (old habits die hard), but, I'm warming to the notion of PDK....only because I can have some direct control in changing up and down gears. And it sounds like traction control off can help in winter - as well as winter tyres

I didn't realise there was 2(?) options for headlights, and with 10 year old cars, I do appreciate I'm likely to be in the dark (literally) with lower spec lamps.

So yes, thanks again for all the helpful advice. I really do appreciate it.👍

You won’t be missing out with the 2.7.  Having been on a couple of “spirited” runs with others, including S models and even up to the 4.0 I definitely wasn’t holding anyone up and no-one pulling away from me as I’d been expecting. Real world country lanes and conditions are a great leveller.

And in many ways it can be more rewarding revving it out but that’s only what I’ve read from others, I’ve only driven a 718 as an S and the 986S so can’t comment on the 3.4 directly.

The PDK also is a good box, I hadn’t had a flappy paddle before this car so wanted to give it a try.  Had tried an ‘auto’ in a Vantage but that was a robotised manual, doesn’t function at all as an auto. For me the 981 is a dual purpose car, it’s not the most razor sharp sportscar but it’s more than most people who aren’t Road Gods need + it’s a practical cross-continent cruiser. The PDK amplifies that as the 90% off the time you’re not “on it” you can just have it in auto, remove that part of brain from the game and cruise, or shuffle in traffic.

With that said, my next one would likely be a 3.4, and possibly a manual. Just because more=more and I don’t buy the same thing twice.  Well, apart from four Elises and three Minis - but they were different in ways other than the colour 😉

  20. I've got those same buttons, also wondered what other options fill in the blanks.

I have to admit, even though I've had my car for a few years now I still don't know what a PCM is.  Is it just the screen, or everything behind what the screen does?  Because it says Communication on my options list I assumed it was to do with the bluetooth phone, or maybe that little slot in the dash (wondered if it was for a SIM card).

Clueless, on the test drive the guy mentioned PCM and I said "what, the radio?" 🤣

And a classic silver??  Go on, you know you want to....

The pic I used from the first post on this thread is silver, well silvery-grey.  You can self-photoshop that one yourself by turning up your screen brightness 😁
