  1. Don’t worry @cozzykim it just confirms the value of a shonky high miler GTS.  If any buyer thinks “ooh that now means that the top price for any S must be £30k” then they’re as delusional as private sellers with higher prices than dealers.

Each car has it’s own individual price and value, which aren’t often the same number.

For reference the S I bought last month was higher than this GTS when I was making enquiries. I still think I made the right choice for me.

2WD Sapphire is probably the 'weakest' of the Cosworth series.  It was never raced or rallied at top level as that variant, only the 4x4 version was.  For best investment you really need a 2 door Sierra, a 4x4 Sapphire or an Escort.  The is also the RS500 but as a road car they are big money for very little gain other than kudos, in some ways worst to drive than the 2 door or the 2WD Sapphire as the homologation add-ons didn't benefit the road version 227 vs 204 PS but lots more turbo lag and added drag.

Not sure RS200s would have been £35k when Scoobies were around.  The nadir was about 1988 after they had been banned from International and National competition at the end of 1986, except rallycross.  Would likely have been climbing again by mid-90s (Impreza came to UK market in late '93 (some had K plates IIRC or they may have been imports/press cars).

I worked for a supplier (Crosby GRP) to the 6R4 programme in '87 to '88.  Could have had a basic 6R4 for £17,500 +VAT (only 15% back then) but not for road registration unless for competition purposes only, they were still legal in the British Rally Championship as n/a engines in Gp B had restrictors fitted for National competition so only the 6R4 qualified.

Got my first (and only) tug from the police in a Sapphire Cosworth when I was 19.  Central London, my bosses car and I'd been in it for ooooh.... 8 mins.

Going too fast up Pall Mall, if I wasn't wearing a suit I'd definitely have looked like I nicked it, probably still did.  Got read my rights at which point I shat myself think I'd be going to jail.  Had my details taken and allowed to continue my journey after they'd called through to the office to confirm I was supposed to be in the car.

Amazingly, heard nothing for several months and then a letter plopped through the door.  Page one going on about what a scumbag I was, page two - we've decided to let you off but beware.  🥳

Given the price drops, I get the feeling that we have a motivated seller here.

@moospeed, if you don't mind me asking, did you view it and was it just in generally poor condition?  If you did visit, I don't suppose you got any pictures of the areas of concern?  I'm presuming the mechanicals must be pretty strong given that it was warranted by Porsche earlier in the year.  Whilst the colour scheme would not be my first choice, it's a manual GTS with lots of little buttons either side of the stick so it's got me thinking!

I shared emails back and forth, and had intended to see it if none of my first weekend's viewings of other cars worked out but I stopped at the 2nd car I saw.  I'd have been buying it as a "fixer upper", that much I already knew from the start.

This is short summary of an extended conversation...

The owner is the MD of Experience Days but he assured me this car wasn't used on any of their driving events.  It's been his daily driver, serviced and MOT'd at the same OPC throughout.  He advised the driver's seat bolster is worn and also the centre console trim is damaged which he suspected might be from having a TV in it during a house move.

If you're not close by then I'd suggest getting in touch for some more pictures, we had issues with Autotrader unable to pass on images so would be best to call and get an email address.

I had mentioned that the photos were really low resolution and they're pretty awful in my opinion, at least one was from years back (scroll down here https://www.quora.com/What-are-peoples-reaction-to-a-supercar-on-a-public-road ) so it would be worth getting some up to date pics.

This isn't too bad, missing 2021 but greens is always a welcome sign https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/results?registration=R33+YNG&checkRecalls=true

You never know, you may be pleasantly surprised 😎

next 2nd hand car I buy - I'm going to insist I wash it first 😆

Yeah, it's a good plan.  Need to drive it for at least 100 miles and wash it.

I was going to say, considering it cost more than my first house.  But the reality is most people usually buy houses after two 20 min visits.  Less than the time you'd spend on a car inspection.

The gutting thing in washing it on Sunday is that I'm an idiot.  I was prepping for the Brands Hatch Porsche thing next weekend, I only live about half hour away so this was a definite maybe.  However the event was yesterday, i.e. whilst I was washing the car - calendar + senile fail.  Only realised when I saw the BoXa "report" on the event dammit 🥺

First wash for the new Boxster which is usually where you pick up on the defects. Glad to say it’s looking ok, no previously unnoticed dents or scratches, etc. Headlamps are perfect, not a single sign of crazing.

Waxed in the books and crannies, ACF50 on some of the readily accessible mechanical bits.

No, I just need a buyer who agrees with my valuation and sees the value in such a lightly used car. Interest rates only matter if you have to borrow money, not everyone will do.

Like I've said I'm not a motivated seller,  I don't need to sell just always get itchy feet for something new every 12 months or so.

Anyway, like I've also said, we can all have our opinions. No one knows the future.

I just bought one last month like you describe, 2014 but feels like a new car, same miles.

I probably paid a bit over what the market should be more given the current money issue. But when I went to see the car I had that “this is the one” feeling so I’m fine with it. So yeah, stick with it and you may get a buyer like me.

I didn’t “need” to buy and equally I didn’t need to sell the previous one. In fact I hadn’t even advertised it, it went to a fellow BoXa member. The price was mutually agreeable obviously, given those listed on the classifieds it would’ve been better priced than most and so maybe would’ve sold but either way it’s still a premium purchase so may well have stuck around for months.

Some of the cars I was looking at back in March are still there. Furthermore some have reduced by thousands and are still sticking fast.

Definitely the market has stalled this year compared with 2020 which was the last time I was actively looking - back then despite the inflated prices cars were selling faster it seems.

£36995 now … Manual - Warranty - 1 owner not enough to offset colour combo and miles it would appear…

This is the one I had considered as a project car as noted above.  But the interior is damaged, and some of the photos are several years old, it would've taken too much money to get it how I wanted and I decided that just to have a GTS over an S wasn't worth the extra money and hassle.

  8. Don't remember ever doing this before in 10k+ miles...

Went for a country blat, as usual Sports Mode and Manual.  However going through a village with some horses trotting in front I elected to switch off the PSE from shotgun scare-mode.

Forgot to switch it back on so it was still on quiet when I was next going about the business of blatting.  It was pretty good actually, hear more of the induction maybe?  Not sure but can't believe I haven't tried this combo before.  Maybe I have and the sound is just more different between the 2.7 and 3.4 but I quite liked it.

  9. What causes the crazing?  Speaking to a dealer a couple of weeks ago he was trying to tell me that “they are te years old, they’ve all got it”.  I pointed out that my 2013 car didn’t.  And the 2014 car I’ve replaced it with also doesn’t show any signs.

Are they less prone when garaged? The dealer reckoned not.

The company I used give a 5 year warranty against vinyl and installation defects. Hope I'll never need to make a claim, but they seem pretty good to me. Every time I visited the workshop prior to booking in they had various Porsches in for wraps, and the last time I went in they had a nearly new Cayman 718 and a 992 from the same family in for PPF.

The vinyl they used (Avery Dennison) has an 8 year manufacturer's guarantee. Had to change to the Avery vinyl from 3m due to finding colour defects part way through on  2 separate rolls!

I'm very happy with the results, the only thing I would say is make sure your paint is good first, I had a few untreated stone chips on the front bumper and 1 on the bonnet and I can see where they were through the wrap. My own fault as I intended on sorting them first but ran out of time.

Cheers, yeah I had asked a wrapper (expensive one, does yacht work rather than cars) about working on a slightly rough classic and the advice was “just get it sorted properly first”. The wrap would just colour the cr*p and end up looking worse if not from a distance.

Surprised to hear that about 3M. It’s usually spoken about in high regard.

Love the colour though, PTS 981 now :)

Picked her up after having her wrapped 😀

Not the greatest pictures but had to rush home so no real photo opportunity.

I'll try to get some better pictures this weekend

Excellent !!  Do they give you a guarantee, i.e. against peeling/lifting, etc?  It's been a few years since I've researched wrapping, I understand the game has moved on considerably.  Guessing it's still considerably cheaper than respraying though?

If these figures are accurate then it seems quite a significant drop in not too long a time, bearing in mind that some dealers are holding onto cars which have been kicking around since April and possibly sooner.  Perhaps sensing the end of summer and thinking will be stuck with it?

A bit of a giveaway on pricing strategy btw, along with faked pictures on another of their adverts I don't think it shows the dealer in a great light to me personally.  I know nothing about them so they might be excellent for all I know.

I think you're right too, but £36k for this combination seems very high when a half decent S would trump it.  Unless you have a spare GTS interior to fit...

Well essentially that’s what happened with my enquiries. I had a brief notion that it would be a cheap way into a GTS and work on some changes to “make it my own”, but when I worked out how much I’d need to spend to bring it up to scratch it just didn’t make sense. I ended up with a nearly-new S with nicer options for the same ballpark figure and nothing essential to do. I’m happy with the decision I made.

@Tony Daniel that CC one is PDK with less miles etc.

@moospeed was just browsing, but thank you. If I fancied a GTS I’d definitely have a view / might be a cheap way into one with warranty.

Ah yes, sorry I wasn't clear.  It was more of a comment to the BoXa massive rather than just you Andy 👍

Essentially though, as may be deduced, it's a little rough around the edges but reflected in that lower price.

  15. Looks good, I think they might be the wheels that someone here painted outside the spokes to vaguely remember the classic Fuchs wheels.

987 is still a looker. I think it was a bit of a shame they removed the hard tonneau cover over the opened roof on the 981 design.  Seeing a part of the roof with large gaps around the side isn’t as neat. I know it saved weight but I’d gladly have a few extra kgs for a neater rear deck.
