But you never let us decide if it’s a better colour than the yellow that just went :(

Take it back, we haven’t finished here.

It isn’t a better colour. But it is a different colour. It’s not grey.

  2. My car went on Friday. I went shopping on the Saturday.

    Bought the low miler.

Prior to starting this thread, as I mentioned I couldn’t decide on the value of the mileage difference. But having seen them yesterday it was worth every penny extra. The one I’ve bought feels almost like new, still has that quality to it, and poking around underneath with a torch things like the suspension components are still clean 😮

No claim was made about “dry use only” but judging from what I was seeing it’s certainly not been “weathered”.

It was monsoon conditions all the way driving back so I’ve instantly ruined it. And I intend to keep on ruining it by trebling the yearly mileage at least.

I’ll do a proper post about it soon.

One of them wouldn’t happen to be the red 981S in Milton Keynes would it?

It wasn’t no, I had contacted on that one, can’t remember what happened but I didn’t like the wheels much tbh.

Where does that leave the thinking, you nudging towards one of the options ?

In terms of what I've read about them both they both appear equally excellent with a couple of niggles.  For me there's never been a car without niggles so it depends how much it would bother me.

The feedback here has actually been helpful so thank you all, the next step is physically going out in them and go with the gut feeling along with all the other factors.  They aren't the only possibles on the list, but if I get either of them I shall of course add pics 😁

Missing a vital piece of information - what are the mileages of the 2 said Boxsters?

There appears to be a huge price drop at 100k miles, so if you are considering a car at 80k vs 50k, i'd suggest you have more room in the lower mileage car to maintain the value than the 80k car.

As others have said as well - that 2k difference could easily be eaten by one big bill, so i'd be looking closely at the recent bills and history to check all the usual "big" jobs have been done and then compare again.

Yeah I’ve done about as much “due diligence” as I can think of, on paper I’m as confident as I can be with a few minor reservations, as expected with any used car.  Both are well under six digit miles btw.

I'd rather have the money in the bank and get the car serviced by my preferred garage. But I would also go colour everytime and in the scheme of things 2k is not a lot, seems a shame you are only going to do 3k miles a years though. The sports chrono is manic, I have it.  As we know its daft on the road, although I like the look of the equally daft clock things in the middle of the dash. This post has, I suspect, been quite useless to you and just repeats what others have said. Er don't you already have a sexy yellow 981 ? Don't come here for miffed missus advice whatever you do.

Yeah that’s it, I’ve got a very well optioned and freshly Porsche serviced and warrantied car.

For the SC I tried the launch control once. Other than that I would only press it in manual mode (it’s stupid in auto on the road) for if I was after a shortcut to toggle the PSE, PASM, etc. My Sports+ button is the least worn out.  I wouldn’t miss it.

Depends on the warranty, if its some cheapo 3rd paty dealer type warranty then it's less valuable, if it's OPC warranty then it has more value. I personally don't value the cheapo ones at all, limits on values, hourly rates and where you can take it to get it fixed all make it more hassle than it is worth. But also as it is a dealer you have the right to reject and other consumer protections rather than you get with a private sale.

Warranty sounds good but it is return to base (2 hours) rather than return to Porsche (45 mins).

I mentioned the dearer car doesn't have sports chrono.  To me that mainly means it doesn't have active-chocolate gearbox mounts, one less concern.

This is all excellent feedback, thank you all in helping empty the bank.  £2k is an easy spend of someone's money on the internet 😄

You could always stick a Porsche warranty on it later if you fancied it.
Again just sanity check the overall condition to help you make the right call.

Yeah, in case you hadn't joined the dots that's why I was asking you before with that in mind 😉

sounds like the mileage difference is less than a years mileage for you - buy the colour you like

I only do 3k a year, the difference is 32k miles.

As with @iborguk and @Robin_GTS it sounds like the colour difference is winning the kudos points.  As my current one is Racing Yellow and what with being an artist and all that I can't deny that colour and aesthetics do feature on my priority list.  I do like the colour on either though...

I feel that the sensible money would be on the higher miles dealer car, for the warranty, long time to the next service, etc.  But then sensible money rarely buys a Porsche 🤔

Tough to give advice without seeing them, big difference in miles I think it's probably worth the extra £2k all things being equal if it means you'll enjoy it more. Just watch out for big service items coming up on either before committing that could spoil the party.

Oh yeah - you reminded me I forgot that vital fact from the comparison...

Higher mile car has just had it's major service, lower mile car will need a spark plug service next year.

  11. Been pondering this whilst browsing the classifieds...   would like to test the hive mind of the BoXa net valuation team.

Two 981s;  assume equivalent spec, they aren't identical but very close and I don't care about the slight tick box difference.  Newer one doesn't have sports chrono and frankly I could live without it despite the original cost.

    Both immaculate condition.
Both FSH and clean MOT history.
Nine months difference in age.  The newer one has less miles but the older one is still reasonable, 5k a year-ish since birth.

The newer, lower miles car is a more attractive colour to me if pushed for an opinion but I'd be perfectly happy with the other colour as well.  So I won't cloud the argument with my personal opinion there.

One has 32k more miles but is from a reputable dealer and thus warrantied.  My usage would be 3k a year.  The lower mile one costs just over £2k more,

The big question is...  is it worth £2k more for a very low mileage and a slightly more attractive colour?  I know it'd be my decision at the end of the day but after much consideration I still can't answer it.

    What say you?

Yes I know. After either 981 or 718. S or GTS in manual. Tbh I'm leaning more to 718 from 2016.

I let go a (in hindsight perfect) 2017 7178 GTS 2 months ago, wish I'd bought it now.

So you spoken to the seller of this 2012 981 S?

Yes I agree, I cannot fathom £40k for an 11 year old model. It will no doubt require a lot ££££ in maintenance (coolant pipes, suspension, tyres, air con condensers etc possible, regular age related fixes).

Was the seller open to realistic offers? Or 'delusional' in that they expect to achieve that 'price'?

No, sorry for the confusion, the delusional seller was on an R8.

I'm after manual. I was after newer 2015 to 2018 in S or GTS.

You think price is fair for a 2012?

    The 981 stopped in 2016 so you won’t find a 2018 one.

From my observations of very many adverts it seems like the year bears less relevance on the 981 than you’d expect.

However lower mileage does seem to bump up the prices.

It seems a bit daft when they should be built to shrug off the miles, and added to the fact that even as a weekend toy 5k a year is perfectly reasonable - but a 2012 car with 55k miles would often be called “leggy” here despite that only being 5k per year.

The golden rules do seem to be options, condition and miles. Not necessarily in that order as everyone has different priorities.  Plus there seem to be a lot of sellers describing cars as sounding like they’re “fully loaded” off the options list but when you check the pictures they are missing a lot.  These days I quickly scan through the pictures before reading anything about the car, can dismiss a car in 20-30 seconds almost from the thumbnails these days.

At one point I was speaking with a seller, his price seemed optimistic at best, a harsher term would be delusional.  The ad had that wording from the 70’s “first to see will buy”, he mentioned he’d had three viewers on it 😕

Have to say, that does look much better.  I hadn't seen this thread before but would've suggested maybe a silver stripe round the outside of the black, these are the best design wheels on a 981 IMHO.  Though probably would've cost the same to get the whole wheel done as just the rim.

Upper wheel here was on a 718 I borrowed, all black including inside.  My wheel is the one underneath, silver outside stripe and silver/grey on the inside.  Not sure how much the grey inner helps but it's a bugger to keep spotless.

Then again the black seems to be showing up the filth just as much.  Powder coated wheels using brake dust as the powder for the low maintenance win.

I apricate that about the paint brush..., it was more about generating the original artwork for the metal.

Oh I see.  Those guys who make it would see to that.  The only tip I could offer would be for the photo to get away from the car as much as possible and zoom in as much as possible (with a proper optical zoom, not a fake phone “pixelate to hell” zoom).  Will compress and flatten the image better, for a side profile it wouldn’t matter quite as much.

The most physical I get is with a paintbrush.

I wouldn’t be creating metal works. However, one of the projects sat behind the easel is a prepped canvas with a US number plate and a Ford Mustang badge, those will be fitted to the canvas after I’ve painted the bumper and reflections.

Moral of that story, don't put your car for auction on ebay. 😬

I think that's the cheapest I've ever seen, potentially the highest mileage as well but that still seems a keen price as they should shrug off the miles to some extent.  However, what did catch my eye was this one in the box underneath.  I wouldn't want that particular car but I do love a funky colour... used to have a poster which I think was a 993 (a few decades ago so forgive me) in this colour.

What are you getting to replace it? Just being nosy.......... :)

That’s been the trickiest question yet, it’s exceeded expectations and I really can’t find anything within the budget I’d intended spending (my car + £10k) that I’d even do a straight swap for. Needless to say there’s been very significant budget creep on the searches to find something worthwhile.

No logical reason to sell other than wanting to try something else. I have a three year cycle generally so it’s that time…

Not so. I put my 996 on there today and any member with 10 years or more history gets free ads. When PetrolTed sold it to Haymarket I was the wrong side of the cut for free ads but not now!

Ah cool… in which case I should still qualify, was basing it on what I’d been told rather than actually trying it out. Will check it out when I’ve got some pics and write-up.

  20. Glad you posted it actually, has given me an extra nudge to advertise mine.  Couldn’t decide where but looks like autotrader might  be the best bet, mine is less miles, much better spec, and will have a better warranty - for less money, so should compare well against the competition maybe.

I didn’t realise Pistonheads charge for ads now, didn’t have to pay before but it’s been a few years ago I guess…

Your car is lovely, but I unfortunately I think it is overpriced by a few £k for a private sale.

I still haven't advertised mine, was going to do it a couple of weeks ago but as I can't find anything better without spending masses more than intended on top then I'm not even sure I'm going to bother now.

One thing that I did pick up though, obviously private sale prices are always less than a dealer.  But if it's got a transferrable Porsche warranty on it then to my mind that's a better proposition than the shoddy warranty booklets that most dealers sell to you for significant profit (it's not out the goodness of their heart or obligation).

If I were looking to buy then that's how I'd see it anyway, and if I ever get around to doing an advert then it's something I'd mention.  I probably missed the boat for this year's summer uptick as per @Menoporsche comment.
