    Wow 3 years OPC warranty

    reasonable cost??££

    wonder what it costs nowadays??

im looking for a 10 year old car so no t sure about OPC warranty on that….

About £650 a year I think, got a package deal for a little discount.  Did it save me £1,800 worth of worry?  Impossible to quantify but it was some peace of mind.  The only time you'd really find out is when something expensive broke.  PADM mounts seemed to be a failure point at the time, and replacement not always a guarantee against reoccurrence.

My current car doesn't have Sports Chrono, and whilst I didn't actively search for one without I haven't missed it at all. But I prefer that it's got less to go wrong.

Sounds like the ‘holy grail’ car 👏👍 well done mate.

fingers crossed another one is out there with my name on it………

There were a few others at the time which also had OPC warranty. In my opinion it’s worth keeping going if you can, some peace of mind for a reasonable(ish) amount. Even though I paid for three years and didn’t claim I don’t consider it a waste of money as I wasn’t overly worried about those expensive options list should’ve been covered.

The replacement car bought the day after I sold mine, another 981, had a bit of RPM Technik warranty but not transferable or extendable. As the last service was from RPM it’s just not worth getting it serviced again now just to get the Porsche warranty so I’m trying to save hard instead. Not happened so far :worried_anim:

Absolutely spot-on. Im currently looking for the perfect 981. The number of cars advertised by online 'reputable dealers' that have obvious issues that they haven't bothered to fix and /or 'didn't think relevant' is staggering. e. g. A £30k low mileage example with every option, including kerbed diamond cut alloys in the photos 🤨,-ran a background check on car analytics and its listed with a recent MOT  advisory of leaking oil. Dealer says-'oh we didn't know about that when we bought the car in'. Car now reserved by someone..................

only one example of many-i could almost write a book about my recent dealer interactions........................

When I was selling my 981 last year it had full OPC history and was still under extendable and transferable warranty.  As far as I’m concerned, if I was buying from myself it would’ve been as promising, potentially more so, than buying from a dealership with your typical “specialist” warranty. Let alone the obvious better price.

  4. Maybe it's a separate topic but I wondered if there were similar good/bad stories for non-OPC warranties.

Vested interest as I don't have a warranty on mine, it fell out of warranty with the previous owner and as it would cost an unnecessary amount just to "tick the boxes" (i.e. re-service an already serviced car) to allow it to have the warranty an aftermarket one is the realistic option.  Or just wing it and stash some cash.

So after the 987.2S that i upgraded with the Spyder suspension and cosmetic bits, followed by a 991.1 C2S, then an Aston V8 Vantage S Roadster, and a S1 Elise, I’m a hairs breadth away from getting into a 987 Spyder! Probably the car I should have had all along (would certainly have been cheaper!)

The 987.2S is still the sweet spot out of the above for handling. The Elise gives it a run for it’s money but is just a little small for me to get comfortable in.

    very excited

There was a time the only Porsche I'd have wanted to get out my S1 Elise(s) for was a 987 Spyder, same shyate roof and ethos.

But then I got old and the 981 arrived.

It’s all coming back to me now, using the BC108 as a driver for a led as you couldn’t drive one direct from most logic chips. It was a real disappointment to find there was none of that fun in degree level electronics, just lots of indecipherable maths🙁

I knew that life would never be the same again after witnessing a blue LED for the first time.  Mind blown. Whatever next…

Ok now you need to share more about the 🐔

If you’re imagining a chicken like robot as you’d see from an Aardman animation you’d be very disappointed.  Took some imagination to turn a click to a cluck.

That takes me back to my electronics A level, 555 timers, PWM, jumpers for goalposts. Always impressed when people get stuck in like this.

555 timer - wow that instantly brought back some memories, it was a cute little chip as well.  I used it in an electronic chicken college project.

Aaah... and many a happy day spent with a BC108 which seemed to be the default choice for a lot of projects.

Sorry, but they look bloody horrible - But, of course, each to his own I guess 👍

Definitely personal taste, saw this one at the Gaydon meet - my mate who usually has similar opinions to me said much the same and was questioning why anyone would “ruin” a car like this.

I could see the appeal myself, more so if the rest of the car was filthy or abused in some way - if it looked like it hadn’t been washed since it left the Sahara then great.

Or some decent headers with sports cats and a remap, made the world of difference to mine🤗 and cheaper than the new diff from RPM.

Apologies if it's a stupid question but I've read somewhere that the "official" reason the 911 engine in the 981S doesn't make as much power is due to the location and limitations on the intake/exhaust.   Sounds partially feasible but more likely that Porsche down-tuned it a bit via software to not interfere too much with their halo model cars.

I wondered if anyone knew what the gains would be on just software changes.

  12. I had much the same decision process as many above when I replaced my 981 with a 981 S.

Whilst both were/are well specced cars (leather dash was a must, and that tends to lead to other ticked boxes) the new one doesn't have heated seats whereas the old one did.  I thought maybe I would miss those but as it happens I haven't as yet and there have been some particularly cold outings...  I think you soon get used to what you don't have, I'm glad I didn't miss out the car because of a nice-to-have rather than a must-have.  It's easy to over do the must-have list.

One thing I didn't actively search for was a car without Sports Chrono but I was happy enough that the new one hasn't got it, less to go wrong which matters if you're out of warranty.  As with most people I tried launch control once.  That was despite the Porsche dealer saying "they wouldn't have built it in if it wasn't to be used".

  13. Cleaned and sealed the roof even though it lives in the garage all the time.  As far as I can tell I suspect it’s always lived in a garage so probably didn’t need treatment but can’t do any harm.  Used the Protex kit which I’ve used before a few times on previous cars and seems good.

    ^^ this.
Just did a European road-trip about 3 weeks ago and changed the units for speed/distance over to kms, whilst sat on Eurotunnel

I drove to Paris last week and had it in mind to change over the display to km's as something to do on the Eurotunnel.  Totally forgot that and only remembered as you leave the train and they have those speed camera displays flashing at you on the exit lane for 50kph and I'm doing 50mph 🤣  oops

Spoken like a true 981 owner trying to protect his ‘investment’

Upwards of £35k is where dealers are advertising judging by current Autotrader adverts!

I will pay what I think a car is worth & what is acceptable to a seller and I certainly won’t pay overs, that money id rather put in my sons bank account, but that too is irrelevant!

seems like every 981 actually any car owner in the current climate  likes to post the same comments that have been bouncing around for months It’s nothing new and thus irrelevant. The price is what it is and what they want.

Hmmm... not really protecting investment, I'm not selling so I don't care (at the moment).

In August I sold mine and bought another so I was on both sides of the equation.  Maybe I paid over, maybe I sold over, who knows?  All I know is that I was happy enough with the deal, so was the buyer of mine and the seller of the one I bought.  Obviously I'd liked to have paid less and liked to have got more but that's human nature, I just got on with it and moved into something else I'd use and enjoy.

I mentioned the original buying price being irrelevant because it is.  The Elise I bought for £12.5k I sold for £24.5k.  The E30 M3 I bought for £9.5k I p/x'd for £7k but to buy it today would be ten times that.  The value is what someone is prepared to pay right now today and doesn't bear any relation to what it cost in the past.
