@PaulQ - apologies re-my statement above, the tank is contained within the boot so any leak has to flood the boot which does not appear to be the case here.  More likely to be a failed hose on the engine side of the fire wall.

Are you sure the coolant is not exiting from the drain pipe in front of the offside rear wheel.?

Good Day, Bad Day, Worse Day.

Good: Took the car to Dove House in Rushden for an oil change & service.  MOT booked next week so they have flagged some possible issues like rubbers in the coffin arms deteriorating, slight play in a front tuning fork (possible source of high speed front vibration) and a slightly weepy rear damper and they also spotted a number plate light out.  Good professional service. 🙂

Bad: Costing up 4 coffin arms, 2 front tuning forks, two rear drop links and two Bilstein B4 rear shocks at about £850.  Anyone got any tips on current good value suspension parts?  Cost here based on reasonable numbers for non Porsche branded parts from D911 ☹️

Worse: Finally when I stopped on the drive after getting home and put the roof up I got out to see a nice pool of orange water under the right rear wheel.  Looks like the bloody header tank has just split. :crying_anim:

Not having much luck are you. Check boot under carpet before fearing the worst.

I would think so as it has multiple applications. Flat clear sheeting for screens is one.

You could probably get some on alibaba, and while it has better properties then PVC, I don't think it would be quite as good as you think it would be in practice.

From a quick search seems like it was 2mm thick on the Z8

You would then have to find somebody that would fit it for you, which would probably be even more difficult then sourcing the material itself.

I take it you don't like the look of the aftermarket glass screen hoods either then, or is there some other reason you don't want a glass hood.?

I must admit that while my hood isn't as new, it doesn't look anywhere near 23 years old, so seems a shame to bin it as it would probably last another screen replacement.

If you can find a supplier replace the plastic screen with one made of TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane). Optically as good a glass, folds in any temperature (no need to chop) and resistent to abrasion. As used on the BMW Z8. I've tried to find a supplier, even BMW, without success unless bulk buying. If your interested and do find a supplier let me know.

    Apparently glass is better...

Wanting to do the Boxster chop every time the hood goes down looks odd to me, but we’re all different.

More a case of need then want.

I'm willing to put up with the slight inconvenience for a better looking hood.

Obviously if you like the look of the aftermarket glass screen hoods then you wouldn't.

Agreed, whilst I've been tempted by a glass rear window unfortunately some of the aftermarket options look downright odd. There's one paricular make that's almost rectangular rather than curved on the sides which looks terrible.

To each their own though ehhh.

    Indeed.

A new mohair hood with glass sounds nice, but to be honest I've leaning very much toward getting a pro to replace the PVC panel for under £300, which should last several years and I can't justify a new hood budget currently having checked several places and prices whilst posting these replies.  The fabric on the current hood is in pretty good condition for the age of the car, although I know from the PO that it is the third hood on the car, the original black hood rear screen split on him which he replaced second hand with another black one which also split and then he fitted the current blue one also second hand and I prefer the blue on the Arctic Silver, differentiates it from a lot of the other silver 986s..

I'm sort of leaning in the same direction.

Pretty sure the hood is original, and the screen was replaced by Car Hood warehouse (previous owner) around 8 or so years ago, so it's done well considering it lives outside.

Glass would be nice, but I can't justify spending 800 quid on a car that probably not even worth 2.5k

Took it for a trip over to my parents today.  Stopped part way to put the hood down. Partly opened it ready to do the Boxster chop and found a split in the bottom left corner of the plastic window.... ☹️😠🤬  Frustrating as I've been really careful to do the chop and also not open it when cold in the two years I've had it.

The question now is - get current hood repaired with new plastic window, fit complete original hood from salvage (but still risks window splitting again), get salvage post facelift complete hood and frame or get new pre-facelift shape hood with glass window from the Forum sponsors?

I have this dilemma. Thankfully the screen is still intact atm, I just can't see bugger all through it.

Steve Strange wants 750 quid for a used facelift roof, which seems very pricey.

  9. Failed its mot on both front drop links.

I've had a slight knock from the front offside for a month or three and presumed it was probably ARB bushes.

Bit surprised tbh as they were replaced a couple of years ago when I had some other suspension work done, so probably less then 5k miles on them.

Still delighted though, as everything else was fine :)

Interesting, the 17"s I took off had GY Aymetric 5 on front.  I partly chose the Dunlops because they are A wet, C fuel and 68 dB front size and 70dB rear size compared to GY Asym 5 at 71dB for both sizes.  There are others (Pirelli, Bridgestone, Yoko, Uniroyal) that are worse than both of these.  A factor worth considering on a convertible with less sound deadening than a normal car particularly with the roof down.

I'm starting to think the ones I have might be faulty in some way.... no idea what would cause this, though there are a few reports of them being noisy on tire reviews for other cars.

Might just get some PS4's as have these on the front and they are fine, but could do without spending more money, plus the mot is due in a couple of weeks.

It's spoiling my enjoyment of the car, especially with the roof down where it's even more noticeable.

Finally got my new 18" wheels on the car with new Dunlop Sportmaxx RT2 tyres. 😁

Just got to decide which wheel centres to fit, my old faded crest or RS.

Be interested to hear what you think of the Dunlops once you have a few miles on them.

Don't think I can put up with the racket from these Eagle F1's for much longer.

Just make sure when you bend it you are flexing it away all around it as there can be a tendancy to push away the top, that may be catching and hence push the bottom closer making that now catch as you are only talking 1 or 2mm deflection to make it rub. Been there done that.

Yes, I know what you mean.....

I think the fact that it isn't very flat at all now doesn't help here, but that doesn't really explain why it only happens occasionally on roundabouts.?

  13. 3 minutes ago, ½cwt said:

Bend it the other way to stop it then!!! or have I missed something here?

It never goes away 100% no matter what position it is in.

I can make it worse by bending it in a little, so it must be this that is causing the noise, and not something else.

I don't see how the brake disc shield can move to touch something.  It is either clear or not as it is all bolted together in fixed positions and the shield is very light weight so wouldn't flex by any notable amount due to even 1g lateral force and you can't generate that much in a Boxster.

Are you referring to the exhaust shields?

Doesn't make any sense to me either but it definitely is the stone guard shield as I can make it worse by bending the thing in a tiny bit.

ah well that's another perspective. I thought it was the wheel bearing at first. just seems odd that it makes that sound only going in one direction.

Mine does this sometimes going round tight roundabouts, and it's the metal shield jobbies.

I'm fairly mechanically minded if I'm looking at your car. My own... I missed loads of warning signs. Excitement...

Oh and the signs of a front end shunt too... I bought a gem 😁

I'd be happy to come with you if you wanted me to compare a working car to my not so working car

Personally don't see the use of an inspection , What one person says is an issue may not be an issue with the next person , A bit like an mot , one tester might advise, yet the next might pass or fail , its all down to an individuals perspective

What happens when an inspection is done and it comes back good but  then a fault occurs 6 months later , plenty of faults can occur overnight.

Got to remember these cars can be over twenty years old and cost between 3 & 10k , your not buying an investment

Just view anything your willing to travel to and use your own judgement

While I agree with you to an extent, not everyone is mechanically minded, and stuff like crash repairs or major faults might easily be missed.

Saying that, these are relatively cheap cars now, so I think another pair of eyes (preferably an owner or someone familiar with the 986) would be a good alternative to a full blown inspection, especially if you plan to look at a few cars.
