  1. Thanks friends. All very useful information.

I decided to take the plunge and arranged for Nick Giles to conduct an inspection on the car. I informed the dealer who told me that an inspection was strictly not allowed. They find that inspections place a tension between customer and trader which is not needed.

I decided that I value £10k far too much not to get a £200 inspection done, so i let the car go.

  2. Morning friends.

As many of you might know i have a 986 S in Viola metallic. I have had the car for over 7 years and bought from a chap on this forum. Over the weekend i was offered a higher mileage 996 C2 of similar year to my 986 (2000). The 996 has 165k miles and is finished in Vesuvio metallic which is a nice colour with black interior. The dealer mentions that the clutch in high, but not slipping and the air con condensers are shot. The car is a smidge under £10k and they wont move on price.

Should I or shouldn't I? I dont often use the 986 in the winter due to the hood and even in summer it can be too hot to have the hood down. However its a big gamble and I would need to sell my 986 to fund the 996.

I know @the baronhas made the jump, but he was lucky enough to keep his 2.5 986. Has anyone else made this jump? Did you regret it?

I have been loosing sleep over this decision.🤔 Any advice or thoughts would be most welcome. I have Nick Giles lined up for an inspection on the 996 this week. How much would my Boxster S be worth? Its now got 120k miles on her.

  3. A good friend who saw my need for help came round this evening. He sorted this with heat and mole grips. Made it look easy....Thank you Dom. I hope the Porsche was easier than the commercial and plant you are more used to.

I replaced it with the new Bosch part and let the car sit for while with the key in ignition position 2. Some Youtube vids say that this is essential. When i started the car, she sounded a bit more throaty and the idle was much more stable.

Nothing like last minute, i will use the car to take my daughter to Uni in London tomorrow and report back. Thanks to everyone for your help with this.

  4. It looks like others have had a go at removing this sensor, the thread is totally rounded off! I am now past the point of no return as i have cut the wires off the old sensor to get the tools over the connector. I am feeling really disappointed that I couldn't get this done.

Next step i  guess is heat. @the baron do you have any gas torches? The car is stuck in my garage, I would have loved to bring this over, but it wont drive.

  5. You all read my mind! A large box arrived via Amazon this week, much to my wife's horror as she thought this was bunting and union jack flags for the street party.

I bought the exact same )2 extraction set with slotted socket and thread chaser and a jubilee clip to go over the end of the socket. I will soak in WD-40 penetrating fluid one last time and attack this tomorrow. God bless the King for Bank Holidays!!!!

  6. Thank you - I appreciate your quick help. I was just standing there, scratching my head....

Whilst i have an expert - just to be sure - the fault code read Bank 1 - i am attacking the lambda on the drivers side of the car -is this correct?

BTW - when did spanners get so expensive? Halfords - £80!!!

  7. I failed guys....

I jacked the car up today and went under - i think i found the offending pre-cat O2 sensor, but then didn't have a 22mm spanner to try and remove this. Every other darn size, but a 22mm.

I also noted that my car does not have post cat 02 sensors - is this possible? I cant find these at all on either banks and spent hours looking.

Last thing i noted, the exhaust has a shroud around it on bank 1 which is loose and rattling around. The pre cat sensor goes through this. It looks to have been removed on bank 2. Can i just remove this to avoid the rattling sound?

Big question though - is it possible that my Boxster does not have post cat 02 sensors?

  8. My good friend @the baronkindly read the codes from my car today. Thank you.

    We got the following code:

P1115: Oxygen sensor heater ahead of catalyst convertor. BANK 1.

Going to ask the OPC to order me one or both sides in depending on price. Anyone know part numbers please?

  9. Thanks EDC and iborgUK.

EDC - any guidance or videos to show me how to clean the throttle body? Is this a good excuse to go 996 throttle body without telling the wife 🙂

IborgUK - do you have the kit to do this? I would be happy to pay for you to scan the car/

  10. I dug the Boxster S out of storage for a couple of days worth of driving to and fro to my London office. The car was great and put a smile on my face, even in the traffic.

I did note that in stationary traffic and at idle, the car hunts around a fair bit.

I have uploaded a video here:

New Bosch MAF was fitted last year and Cotswold Porsche checked for air leaks a while back.

  11. I need some help please. I took Viola for her annual MOT this morning. I felt sorry for her in the salty, grit, but she made me smile as always in the slippery country roads near me.

The MOT tester found a front cracked spring and I have to sort this before i use her in anger again.

Can anyone suggest where to buy this from and what OE would have been? Is it worth a suspension refresh whilst i am there? I was told that with a spring, i should also change top mounts. I am also considering changing the shocks whilst I am there as a winter project to keep my brain alive over Xmas and avoid the 10th showing of carry on kyber and the two ronnies.

    Any help is much appreciated.

  12. New MAF arrived over the festive season from Design 911 (A good fast service actually). I opted for the Bosch component approx. £180.

Fitted this late last night after being dragged around Oxford Westgate, sale shopping. I didn't realise that sale shopping means going out with no idea at all what you want and then just wandering around every shop until something takes your fancy....When something does catch your eye, you must touch it and then say "Its not quite what i am looking for".....

Any ways, when i got back home, I decided to do smoothing productive to avoid a wasted day.

I used the 101 projects for your Boxster book as a reference.

    Engine exposed.

Removed old MAF - Thanks to @archemistfor letting me know this was a Bremi.

And the bog whole that it left once removed here:

New MAF (Bosch) fitted and the car put back together - it fired up and was steadier on idle.

I took the car to collect some parts for my daughters and wife's car this morning and it did not miss a beat. I will keep you updated, but fingers crossed this is the end of the MAF woes.
