Mine has a noise on startup up from cold but only lasts a split second. I’ve been told that’s the cam chains pumping up?

I`m pretty sure it`s not that and IS the exhaust.

  2. Mine did just that.   A good raspy clatter on startup when cold.   got progressively worse until the joint from the cat to the exhaust gave up.   super common on 986/987 and newer.

  3. Bit of detector work this afternoon.   From the diagram below I’m guessing part 10 is the culprit but in my usual style I’ll most likely order 9 10 11 and 12.   13 is just a rubber cover so I’ll reuse that.

I’ve never seen this problem so it’s obviously not a common one.

  4. Odd side effect of getting this job done has been the elimination of my very slight engine idle speed when the engine is warm.    Sat at a standstill in neutral I`ve always had a s100 RPM or so drop / increase/drop on the rev counter and you could hear it also.   I`d checked the usuals and replaced plugs and coil packs not long ago so I just put it down to "they all do that" as read elsewhere.

It`s totally rock solid now.,  No variation or odd stumble.      Obviously the escaping gases at the flange have been affecting the readings from the second O2 sensor.

So upon reflection I should have tackled this long ago!   For the sake of a few quid for the parts it`s one of the best fixes i`ve had to to.

  5. Just a quick thumbs up for the "MOTUL Gear 300 75w90" gearbox oil I`ve now got in the Boxster.    I had a faint whine in third gear which doesn`t show now and the general feel of shifting seems better also.

That and the new Triangle gaskets and nuts and bolts mean the car now sounds quite a bit nicer.    Should have done both jobs before now.

  6. Exhaust triangle gaskets on both sides and gearbox oil changed.

the drivers side nuts and bolds had given way (heard a twang when driving followed by two stroke bike type racket ) but the passenger side crumbled and separated with a slight twist of a flat blade screwdriver.
it’s obviously been leaking for a while now as it sounds far nicer standing next to the drivers side and much fruitier from the tail pipe.

  7. I`d be tempted to have the exhaust gasket and 3 studs/  bolts between the cats and the back box checked.   Once they start to rot away you will hear some ticking and odd noises before they give way completely.

  8. Looked at a friends car earlier after said friend complained that they had difficulty changing into second gear.

Without even starting the car as soon as I moved the gear stick through the gears (not even depressing the clutch ) I could tell something wasn’t right as the sound from the back end was like a bag full of spanners.

my guess is the linkage / cables but couldn’t get under to have a look as I had decent clothes on.

    any advice ?

  9. If i'd seen this sooner i'd have mentioned renewing the seal on the door membrane / metal inner.    You'll know soon enough if it needed doing if the carpet on the bottom of your door is wet....

  10. So as usual on the run up to Christmas something always spoils my plans !

The exhaust flange bolts where the exhaust meets the cat has split.   Rusted bolts which is common I see.       I got the parts from stock at my local OPC and will get them on the car in the new year.

Here are the part numbers if anyone has the same issue.    2 x triangle gaskets and 6 x nuts and bolts.   The nuts and bolts are in the same bag so here's the list

    2 x 997 111 113 00  exhaust gaskets
    6 x 900 075 365 02  m8x30 bolts
    6 x 900 075 365 02 m8 lock nuts
