First drive out in about 3 weeks, did a @Loz987 and had the top down despite it peeing down, brilliant fun, went to the Boat Museum in Ellesmere Port, highly recommended if you are like me and like industrial heritage, boats, engines, transport that kind of stuff.

I’m staying at the Holiday Inn on the canal in Ellesmere Port in two weeks when we visit family (not in the Boxster - 3 of us going).  I’ve not had a look at the Boat Museum, might take a look some time...

I nearly did, but decided to give it a go.......

Left it for 2 hours after taking the power off to ensure the airbag would be safe, but even then was quite nervous of sitting in front of it to take the bolts out. Steering wheel 'ate' 3 T27 bits. Snapped the first one and then the next two 'disappeared' into the wheel housing. The fourth one (plus 2 days WD40) won; attached to a power drill extension socket holder and ratchet handle. First up I'd used a fixed T27 'L' shaped screwdriver which twisted completely out of shape. So, a 10 minute job (after disconnecting the power and leaving for 15 mins, as per the book) actually took over 48 hrs. I had a feeling it would on a 17 yo car, which is why a gave myself a go at it when I had the time and way before I wanted it actually done.

Most of the normal advice suggested the wheel might be 'stuck' on, but, having unscrewed most of the thread, I left the central nut in place (to avoid smacking myself in the face with it) it literally just lifted away with very little force. The securing nut was also easily undone. I've seen a youtube video that said that this should be torqued to 35ft/lbs (47.45nm!), so it should indeed have come away easily, and it did.

One nervousness was the possibility that the obc might sense something had been done and put the airbag light on, but clearly as there is no power available whist it is disconnected, it was fine.

Also good to check you have the stereo code to hand as well.....

Having removed it, I cleaned and put it straight back on! Then drove over 100 miles - all good.

    Good job ?

Took the steering wheel off to prove to myself that I could; the left hand airbag securing bolt was a total nightmare to 'unstick', main securing nut came off easily, as did the wheel itself.

Now ready to take it off again in a few weeks for a refurb when I go on holiday. Always good to come home to a waiting parcel and an excuse to go back to the garage.....

I bottled taking mine off. I let Jack at Royal take it off and swap for my refurbed Wheel - he knows what he is doing for sure.

I have been called Peter Pan in the past

Yes I can see that :)

I met with some friends from Uni last weekend (I have not seen one of them for 10 years+), we stepped straight back into the same routines as played out when we were 18 (31 years ago) :)  In my head I'm still 18, my body does rebel sometimes though...

I don't get a chance, the edit option seems to disappear after a minute or so.

Ah.  Just checked and extended time edit capability is only available to site contributors apparently.  (I found a post from last year when this was discussed...).

Haven't really posted much in this thread, and this isn't so much a what have I done today, more a what I did last week.  After I got back from Download Festival I was off work for the week before heading to London for the weekend to see Guns N Roses with a very close friend of mine.  I figured she'd like to travel in style so decided we'd go in the Boxster.

I spent the week cleaning, polishing and waxing, treating all the plastics and reviving to as near to new as I could, and touched up the wheels to hide the heavy corrosion (temporary measure until I have them completely refurbed).  Full carpet clean inside, and leather treatment on the seats, along with treatment of all the plastics, anti-fogged the inside of the glass, and rain-x'd the outside.  Checked the ancillary belt, water pump and tensioner etc.... Also replaced a missing 'alien eye' cover for the alarm sensors, and clear greased the mechanisms (in particular the slides) for the roof, which has made it silky smooth and stopped the juddering.  Also checked the coil packs for cracks, all good!

I had gotten sick of the skipping on the back end round left hand bends, and the car's tendency to wander occasionally so took it to my local ATS for a full computer alignment.  Camber all round was spot on, but surprise surprise, all 4 wheels were toe'd outwards!  The guy had done a ton of Boxsters and 911s so knew his stuff.  30 minutes and he had everything absolutely spot on.  The thing drives a million times better now - still skips a little round corners, but that's because of the cr*p (and mismatched) tyres that were on it when I bought it, which I will get round to replacing as soon as funds allow.

Anyway, fast forward to that weekend, had an amazing time in London, Guns n Roses was surreal (been listening to them for 28 years and never thought I'd get to see it live), the Boxster performed faultlessly for 600 miles, and only cost me around £90 in fuel.  But, the best bit about the whole thing is that I got the girl!  Couldn't be happier with everything right now!

    Result all round!

Driving back from my moms last night around 9pm dual carriage way, national speed limit - football sized rock in the middle of the road only missed it as I was changing lanes, gave me a big scare! - pushed hazards on as I was being followed by a few cars saw someone pullover so hopefully they moved it.

So your contribution to the 'What have you done to your 986 today?'  thread is ... soiled the drivers seat?  :P

Seriously though I have had that happen to me when driving my last 5 series a couple of years back, I actually hit it and drove over it as it was to the side of the road, narrow country road, double whites in the middle of the road and other cars oncoming so I could not avoid it.  I stopped looked, could not see anything too bad but drove straight to the BMW garage in Bridgwater as I had a 200 mile journey to do and I was not going to risk that with a potentially dodgy tyre at Motorway speeds.  No damage found but the noise it made when I hit was horrendous.

Anyway sounds like you had a lucky near miss, gets the old heart going so you know you are alive! :)

Brilliant, Jason!  You kept that quiet yesterday when Darren posted pictures of his JPS wrap.  Had you always intended to do the JPS thing, or did you decide after painting the wheels?

Hope you've had a great day, BTW. :)

It was very weird this morning, there I was sat waiting at 6am for Jason to arrive.  I watched a black JPS Boxster pull into the car park and didn't clock it was Jason at first as I was not expecting it!

Then the Victor Meldrew like 'I don't believe it!' from Jason last night made more sense

It was on my to do list anyway, I just bought it forward. I dunno why but I'm so conscious, I've never been to anything like this before and don't know what to expect I guess.

Don't worry, drive there, give it wipe over when you get there to remove some of the bug splatter and then wander around and drool over the rows of sumptuous metal on display!

Space savers are a strong look!

I took a bottle of meguires quick detailer spray and some micro fibre cloths to give it a quick once over when parked up on display.

I will take some quick detail and glass cleaner - no doubt however clean I start out it's going to look like I massacred a million bugs after the drive there!

I can only do my best. It's gone off today to have it's wheels done as I would be too embarrassed to take it with the state they were in. I hope to god they'll be ready in time, the guy assured me they would on the phone, but now he didn't sound so convincing!!!! :o:o

I can't believe you have done that for Beaulieu!  You are taking this seriously

What if they are not ready, you might have to come with it on four space savers if you can borrow some...

I've ordered a few bits online that hopefully mr postman has delivered today (a few packages for me to arrive home to tomorrow as working away tonight).

All will be obvious at Beaulieu.

Is it some of these exhaust pipes?  That will be quite obvious!

Father in law took delivery of it last week. I was only a passenger sadly (give him a few weeks and a few miles on the clock and he'll let me have a pedal, I'm sure). Went on a country lane blip (roof down) half way to Minehead funnily enough. It sounds Ok, bit quiet. Plastics feel a bit cheap (ford) and wasn't mentally fast, but I think he was being steady - very steady. The track functions and launch control are cool though!

It is a manual and the audio (optional) is amazing!

Interesting.  I have been meaning to have a go in one, has to be the V8.  I assumed it would be quite loud (and brash).  Launch control - all I think of now is that Grand Tour clip - hilarious.
