  1. Don't know where all the 718 Spyders are going...?

I tend to keep an eye on these cars on Autotrader and up until recently there were always over a dozen for sale with prices softening down to £90,000, and plenty in the OPC's.

Then suddenly this week there are only 2 for sale on Autotrader and 4 in the whole dealer network, with most near or over the £100k mark.

Shortage of new cars? Winter nearly over?  Maybe the last naturally aspirated ICE Boxster? Or just the realisation that this is one of the finest  roadsters available for the money?

Maybe a combination of several of these factors are at play - whatever it is they are certainly far rarer and more expensive than they were last month.

Realised I hadn't commented here.  Cracking combo Rob - congrats on the Spyder, it looks awesome.

How are you finding the roof? Doesn't actually look too much of a faff based on a few YT videos

Thank you for your kind comments mate!

There is no denying that the roof is a bit of a faff, but it's worth it for the junior supercar looks!

You soon get used to it to be honest, I tend to leave it down in the Summer anyway!

Roof up it also looks different to a regular Boxster due to those flying buttress thingies!

I also didn't realise that it had a plastic rear screen for ages!

Definite improvement. Now throughout the whole rev range the car sounds as you would expect it to have done, rather than the valves closing between 2k and 4k, muting the sound where you actually spend the majority of time. Having come from a 981S with PSE and Cargraphic “X”-pipe it was very lacking as standard so both myself and Mrs. drago knew straight away we needed to do something to restore some aural character, which for now this has succeeded in doing. It just feels more fun.

We’ll see how we get along with it over the next few months - a replacement back box might be on the horizon if we yearn for a bit more engagement with the car without being at 10/10ths.

    For about £450 fitted it’s a no-brainer.

Another thing about the controller, it’s pretty much fit and forget, too. The controller stays on the selected mode until you decide to change and press the remote, so you can tuck it away into the door pocket or centre console and only reach for it if you need to.

    Thanks!

Mate, how are you getting on with a spyder in scotland?!? Does it not become a hassle to do the roof every time it rains? I've been running my 981S boxster in Scotland all week and have found so little opportunities to get the top down..I think the 718 Spyder is one of the best looking cars there is and really want one, but the roof impracticality in UK weather keeps putting me off..

I'm getting on just fine with the Spyder in Scotland thanks.

I understand your concerns about the roof, but as the Spyder is my weekend and fair weather car, I don't find it a problem. It is usually down most of the time! Also I don't run my Porsches through the Winter months, so again I don't have to cope with cold, wet or snowy weather. I just use the Jag!

The roof is no more impractical than the electric version, as it is warm and dry once up, and hidden from view when down. The only drawback is that you have to stop the car and spend a few minutes to put it up or down - that may make it inconvenient at times, but does that make it impractical? That depends on your viewpoint I suppose, and perhaps how often you need to drive in bad weather. There are some car convertible roofs that are far worse, Lamborghini for example

If it was my daily driver, or my only all year round car then no, i would stick with a 981 or 718 GTS for the electric roof convenience.

For me it works fine, but I also understand it's not for everyone - that's what makes it so unique!

  6. Yep, seems to be a common theme emerging here, and my experience is no different.

    After two 987's, two 981 S and two 981 GTS's I finally bought a brand new 992 Carrera 4 coupe.

Great car, but as others have said, more of a GT than a sportscar.

I missed the open top aspect of the Boxster but wasn't keen on 911 cabriolets, the coupe shape is classic, like a coke bottle!

Anyway I wanted to try a 911 and glad I did so. I found it very fast on the road, but to get the same excitement levels of the Boxster it meant driving it way above the speed limit as it was just so easy. Felt a little big on the twisty roads that I drive on though, hated the PDK gear stick too!

The unexpected opportunity to buy a new 718 Spyder came up with the new flat six 4.0 litre engine and I swapped the 992 for it.

I love the Spyder with it's manual gearbox, perfect handling and aggressive stance. It's a brilliant engine and feels like driving a mini F1 car after the 911.

The wind in the hair capability just adds to the positive driving experience - yes the Boxster takes a bit of beating!

And just as I decided I actually like the red interior, it's gone.

Not a fan of the red interior, but I could have lived with that.

But I could not tolerate all the colour coded white exterior bits, which ruins the GTS exclusive looks vs an S.

Too expensive as well...although someone bought it at that price!

That is gorgeous but now would be the time to sell not buy.

Not sure of the spec on your Spyder but just to give you some reference to the prices these cars are trading at the moment but I looked at this Spyder at the weekend. Slightly shocked at the £107K price tag but its since sold.

    Wow, that's an amazing price!

458 is fecking awesome of awesomeness - after driving one through the alps I can say it’s the best car I’ve ever driven - sell the Boxster and take the £10k while you can, but a nice 355 now and as those prices rise and the 458 drops, swap over.

you could also get a very nice McLaren at the same price point - a few super cars drop into range - do it now before we are forced into driving soulless electric cars with mandatory speed limiters

Well yes, I hear what you are saying about electric cars, but I already have a Jag I-pace for every day use - brilliant by the way.

    McLaren, no thanks!

355 then a 458, potential huge loss there, and I think the 458 prices will rise not fall...

The 718 Spyder seems to hit the sweet spot for people with finite funds that want maximum enjoyment from an open topped two seater.

Seems like I already have utopia, maybe I should recognise the fact and stick with it...nice as the Ferrari dream may seem!

You got out of the 911 quick enough.  Are they too much for the road?  How will a Fezza be on the same roads?

The 911 was more like a GT than a sports car, too big, wide and heavy for the roads I drive.

But an itch I needed to scratch.

The Fezza is smaller, more agile, but too fragile...I don't know?

Sell it and get a 4.0 GTS. Like your Spyder but with a real roof. Then as map says, you can enjoy it frequently. Spend your profit on upgrading :)

I have done that, a GTS in the spec I would want comes in at £80k...that's what I paid for the Spyder so not really a consideration, the Spyder is a more desirable car at that price

So not really an option, unless I really need the £10k.. which to be fair I don't really.

So the Spyder is winning so far!

Having ridden shotgun in an extremely well driven 458 on UK roads I would say that they are a massive event, massively quick and need a massive amount of space to be really enjoyed.

I have also experienced some of the Borders roads led by you.

Reflecting on those two experiences I’d say you will get more absolute pleasure from the Spyder than the 458.

    For a lower capital exposure.

A lower risk of unexpected remedial work.

And at the end of the day if you want ballistic speed you’ve always got motorbikes….

As always a great and considered opinion from you Matthew, based on personal experience- thanks for that!

I must say I think you are spot on!

Can't argue but no matter how nice the Porsche is it isn't a Ferrari.

What about selling the 718, bank the money and buy the Ferrari for half-price when things bottom out :)

    just please please please don't start quoting things like;

I've an itch I need to scratch.

I'm about to pull the trigger etc.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Did wonder about selling high and buying low...but how long is the bit in between,
