  1. Humm..  I’m sure I didn’t run the engine when I did my 2015 a few years back.  I think I connected the ctek, but not in the 12v socket (as I don’t have that connector). I just connected it across the battery (plus terminal and engine ground). I think this has the same effect of keeping things active, or maybe it’s the opening and closing of doors that keeps resetting it?  I know mine goes for 30 mins before closing down. I may have to experiment.

  2. Yes I also believe 4.76 is the latest. I am also on this version so was just checking he is not shipping an earlier version.  As I stated previously, when I did this back in 2018 it was 4.73 that was shipped so you had to be careful to not downgrade if already on 4.76, hence I bypassed the software load step.  I’m assume here that you could also have bypassed that step, though if same version it should make no difference either way.

  3. Thanks for the update Brian.

A query on the software version (not map version), you say you did update this via the DVD, what version were you on before and what version are you on now?

When I recently bought my 2016 car from an OPC, I got the maps updated to 2022 as part of the deal. However, it is now clear that the maps on this car are older than the 2018 maps on my previous car - probably still the original 2016 maps. The “history” tab on the PCM shows that update activity took place on the day before I collected the car but one of the actions generated an error message. I am in discussion with the OPC about resolving this. In the meantime, it would be really helpful if anyone with the 2022 update installed could confirm that the A555 is shown running east from Manchester Airport to join the A6 near the village of High Lane. This road is completely absent on the (probably) 2016 maps, was partially present on the 2018 maps, and if present on the 2022 maps would be a great indicator that any update had been successful. Many thanks!

Yeh, just to add. The A555 shows on the 2018 map updates but only as a white road that it will not navigate you down, when the 2018 maps were released the 555 was still to open (opened nov 18 if memory serves).  I have the 2018 maps currently so can’t confirm the 2022 update has correctly updated this, but I would be very disappointed if not!!

Not visible clips, it's coated in high temp grease already but I've gone well beyond "careful" and it's not budged.

I could go for full animal mode, but I'm only on jack stands.

if you look on the part here:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265396835438?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338268676&toolid=10044&_trkparms=ispr=1&amdata=enc:1XmhHupDyTdmMzxagvzkzYw63&customid=EAIaIQobChMI0e_krLXA9wIVDOztCh3GtgzVEAQYByABEgK78fD_BwE

you can see that there is a clip involved (this is the 991 part but surely the 981 would use the same method?).  Ive got to admit though, when I had issues with mine I had a look to see if it was easy to un-attach and couldn't see an obvious clip either!!

  6. Right, having a responsive seller is quite a big bonus.  If I recall correctly sometimes the disk loads fail and need retrying and there were a few ‘gotchas’ in the process.

Also, before you start, If the process involves updating the PCM software first, ensure the version of software shipped does not downgrade your existing version. If you are on 4.76 don’t downgrade to say 4.73. (This was one thing to check a few years ago as the software version shipped was 4.73.)

  7. A number on here updated via an eBay seller to the 2018 maps a few years ago, and the process looks similar here, activation via usb. The car VIN needing to be supplied and this gets encoded into the key which is loaded via a usb stick.

I’ve not used these guys or heard any reports though.   If you do go for it do report back on success.

it's always bothered me that the OEM grab handles were not included and covered in a lower end vinyl material.

Maybe you should have bought a Bentley.😝

However they were suggesting it may need an oil change due to the oil condition sensor detecting the quality of the oil has fallen below what is required.

Humm something not smelling right here.  Firstly I have never heard of an oil sensor being used on the 981, though that’s no guarantee there isn’t one (or maybe they are sticking a sensor in to test?).  Secondly you have only done 4k miles since the last oil change, with the standard interval being 20k miles then there are three options here:

    1.  The oil wasn’t in fact changed at 26k miles

    2. Driving has been extreme in last 4k miles (multiple track days?)

    3. OPC is trying one on.

it seems the service intervals generally were each a few  months late which leads to this issue. Given the warranty has been approved I can see how they can enforce an oil change/brake fluid, maintain service before October 22, though spark plugs should in theory be done in August.

drove a 981 without PSE and it sounded cr*p!

Got to say I completely disagree with this!   The none PSE cars still sound great they are just much quieter, a simple exhaust can’t make a cr*p sounding car sound great. The fundamental quality of sound is all there without the PSE, it’s just it’s highlighted and heightened by the PSE (and crackles and pops added).    Certainly if the car is not a daily then the PSE adds a level of thrill that just isn’t there without, so highly recommended regardless.

OPC wanted over £700 to do it!

Just an oil change?   Or was that for a minor service.?

Got to admit I do yearly oil changes myself (in addition to the standard service schedule).  And it’s usually under £100 all in (oil from Costco).

£700 for just an oil change is outrageous, even for an OPC.

right I’ve just experimented with that post images site.   You don’t even need an account,  just select the upload images link, when uploaded it gives a load of links.   As above.   The ‘direct link’ can just be pasted into you post and the photo will show.

the other links above in theory should show thumbnails but don’t seem to work on this forum.

I joined flickr but unable to load photos from my iphone as they're in a format I don't, and flickr doesn't seem to, recognise - called HEIC 🤔

Just a tip for anyone struggling with the apple format.    I found the easiest way to convert from HEIC to jpeg is to drop the apple photos into an intermediate directory (via the files app). And then upload/copy from there, this seems to automatically change the format.  Though I don’t think I’ve had any issues uploading the apple format to Flickr.

  14. It would only be duplicating the info on the red light so no advantage I can see from including a ‘P’ or ‘N or ‘R’. In fact if you select neutral via pulling both paddles the display goes blank to indicate no gear selected.

interested if your replacement exhaust is louder than previous. I remember you saying at one of the borders meets that you thought that yours was quieter than some others.

Yes my replacement is quite a bit louder,  I do wonder if one of the flaps was permanently  closed on my previous exhaust?.  The flaps did move externally ( until they didn’t) but no guarantee that nothing has broken internally I guess.

I wonder if the flaps can be accessed via a borescope from the tailpipes?

  16. There seems to be a few ways these can fail.

    1. The actuator fails,  these can be replaced separately though Porsche don’t seem to publisize  the fact.  It looks as though your actuator works fine though.

    2. Some issue with the vacuum solenoid/pipe work.  Daz had this issue and his excellent video covers the solution, replacement parts available.

    3. the actual valve itself seizes. I assume these are somewhat similar to throttle body or choke valves, obviously the exhaust is subject to temperature extremes, carbon deposits and acidic attach from exhaust emissions so it seams that over time they can just seize up.
In this case unless you can free it up (some people do have success with this) then an exhaust replacement is the only solution.
    ☹️

  17. Can you actually move the valve by hand ( you should be able to), if not then the flap has seized in the exhaust.  If you can then it’s a case of trying to change the ball end. im not sure why that would shear like that unless the flap was extremely stiff or seized.

The actuators were available from a few places:

    https://www.eurospares.co.uk/Porsche/Boxster_981/Boxster_981_(2012)/PartDiagrams/202-005/EXHAUST_SYSTEM

..but I don’t know anywhere that provides the ball end separately.

it you are under warranty they will probably replace the whole exhaust for you (my whole exhaust was replaced last year.)

I've had PASM on my 997 but that was over 15 years ago and you'd hope things have moved on some.  I occasionally drove that in Hard mode.  But it felt so different to soft that you didnt have the confidence to press on because the car didnt behave or feel as you were used to.

This certainly isn’t the case with PASM in the 981. In fact it’s sometimes difficult to tell the difference between modes, both modes are adaptive and there is overlap in the ranges….so someone tootling in sport may have firmer dampers than someone hooning  in comfort.  I only tend to use sport PASM setting when driving spiritedly on dry roads, here you can feel a definite tightening up of the back end and bit less mobility at the rear.

I’ve driven other sport saloon cars with smaller wheels but much crashier suspension than the 981, I’m not sure now they can produce a car that both rides so well and handles brilliantly, but as CMA says this isn’t just due to the PASM.

  19. It’s interesting how Porsche change their ‘upgraded’ exhaust looks over the years,  e.g. 4 pipes or 2 coming from the 911, seems to change regularly.  Currently you upgrade to PSE on a 911 and go from 4->2,  seems to be to opposite on a Macan!

  20. Here are a couple more photos of the ends of the tips,  there doesn’t appear to be any significant pitting here IMO.  However my Dremeling did reveal some slight pitting on the bottom side of the exhaust tips. This is the bit adjacent to the ground when fitted, so if you are trying to impress magnifying glass wielding worms they may not be for you. Bear in mind that the photos are quite zoomed in, from a yard away these are near invisible.  I expect any s/h tips are likely to have some pitting like this.

I also checked the nuts and these are fine.
