0.8 Ohm is for each heating element, base and back

Do you have 4 heater connection terminals with 2 on the base and  on the back? I only have two, at least as far I can see?

Anyway, it seems like they are working correctly although not sure what sort of thermostat would be fitted. Timer maybe?
When I was thinking about this earlier, I was expecting there to be a variable resistance added to change the load and you have a constant load. I was expecting a higher wattage and if it was 55w, that is exactly the rating of a headlight bulb. I would be trying the two settings on a bulb to see what happens!
    Good luck

The control unit is part of the under seat heated wiring loom.  Looks like a relay, but has Pic inside with some other electronics to monitor the temps.

You mentioned the seats have a resistance of 0.8 ohm. My 987 seats have a resistance of 1.3 ohm.

Using the law of ohm V=IR.

Assuming V is 12v and as we have different resistances, we would see different currents in the circuit for our respective seats. Assuming the seat resistance is fixed (my seats have two terminals), the current has to be controlled somehow and must be also measurable at the output of the control unit? With the two settings on the switch, I would be looking for a difference between settings and if possible, absolute values for each with the ammeter in series to the circuit for the current.

The 986 heated seats also have 2 stage heating, press once for high heating and a second for low heating.  The switches have LEDS that glow red and orange.

I have just discovered that. Thank you.

You're all over the threads! I had to go and find it...

There a few threads on this subject at the moment. Thank you for looking as I couldn't remember it! That is the summary video and I skipped that and probably explains why I didnt remember it :)

I watched the individual ones with each of the stages and on the one with the switches he modifies the switch, presumably to work with the many relays and diodes.

I have just checked the manual (trying to remember how to switch off the traffic announcements that have appeared on the radio since I disconnect the battery!) the standard switches are indeed dual setting and have red (high), orange (low) and off-settings.  The off setting comes from clicking the LED side of switch, which is the only working side in the modified wiring in these videos.

the video you posted of the 986 showed they were two stage also.

My 9x7 seats support two stage heating and this is linked to the ecu or some ecu linked controller.  I think, the 9x6 switches are single versions, ie on or off and reset to off with ignition or power disconnect.
if you mean the video of the seats into the 986, I haven’t made it to the end of that yet. I decided to instal and sort the heating later. If it was a different one, can you remind me which was it was please?

I’ll put one together, not difficult to do if you buy the seats with heating elements already fitted.

Thanks. The retro fit I have seen (I think on here) had a two stage switch. The standard switches are, I think, one stage. Perhaps you are not activating all of the heater if it is not hot enough?

  7. I fitted these yesterday. Well done to the person who fitted them in 1.5 hours. It took me an hour to work out how to unclip the wiring loom connectors on the seats and my soldering iron is not really up to such heavy gauge wire. I got there in the end though and very pleased with the seats, improved driving position and driving experience due to how firm and snug/fitted they are compared with what was in there before.

A quick test on battery before fitting confirmed there are heaters in the seats and the size difference between the two is noticeable side by side. The colour also looks different although the car has several shades of grey plastic, leather and carpet within and looks great.

  8. A couple of jobs this weekend. I fitted the 997 seats and like them a lot. The interior of the car has a few different shades of grey and they look good. I had also tried to put my private plate on having finally got TFL to agree to transfer across my existing ULEZ compliance status to the private plate and the first time I tried, the existing front number plate plinth was full of holes and splits, so I ordered a new one from Porsche. For reasons best known to Porsche, despite taking my VIN number, they originally supplied one for a US spec car!

Once I have completed the current round of improvements on mine I may finally get a Continental. My radio is okay (Kenwood) and can connect two phones (one work and one private) but it annoys me because it doesn't dim with the rest of the interior lights when I want a nice dimly lit cockpit.

The continental is a good unit if you get the correct wiring for the speaker set-up you have. I didnt initially and the air conditioning fans used to interfere with the sound when turned up. There is a guy in Norway who sells a modified ISO connector and that solved it. Not sure the continental attaches two phones and I don't remember mine dimming.  Loved the colour scheme though and the skip track was perfect for Spotify.

  10. Wow, that is some impressive diy on the dashboard. I have tackled the job a couple of times with my old TVRs but that was a few screws, a bit of friction and plenty of araldite! That looks complicated and good potential for rattles.

I did compare my 996 and 986 using a tape measure from throttle pedal pivot to seat and seat runner. I think there was 30mm difference - pics below. The 996 is easily bigger for legroom. Using 997 seats in my 996 with the seat fully back its almost too far from the clutch pedal to operate easily and I'm a just a smidgen below 6 2.

    Red carpet is 996

You can see seat runner is 10mm further back. Then seat is further back on the runner by roughly around 20mm. So 30mm mm overall.

That is a good spot! I removed the stop on the 996 seats and obviously can not do that on 986!
@phazed can you measure your 986 and 987 as per pictures and report back please?

Just returned from a test drive after going for Gravity sports cats to go with my ToyoSport back box and manifolds.

Yes, noisier but how noisy, I don’t really know. Need to call down to Brands for a noise check sooner than later just in case I have to try and quieten it down…

Otherwise car is going well and I need to put some miles on it to make sure all is okay after all the work it has had. One thing is for sure, the roads and lanes in Surrey are effing awful! I don’t usually pay too much attention just pottering around in my high profile tyred old Rangie but with it’s stiffer suspension, it would be a nightmare to use it as a daily!

Did the cats make a difference to the performance?

  13. @RedBarediver Thanks, I am going to not bother with the heating at first and will be fitting this week assuming the weather doesn't stop pay and it all looks nice and simple.

@ATM Thank you for that. I have taken the passenger seat aside and that does not have the seat belt one and understand what needs to happen now.

So if you don't connect the wire the light will never illuminate. If you do connect the wire the light will illuminate when the belt is not connected. If you connect the wire and insert a belt the light will not illuminate.

Thanks. I assume this is in the connectors under the seat on the standard loom. It sound like it should all be obvious when I take the seat out.

Looks nice Graham. Are they Porsche wheels? If so, what model?

Hi Peter, they are genuine Porsche 17” BBS from an early 996 refurbished by Lepsoms and then never used. To be honest, a couple of them look like they have not been used much at all!

Literally just two wires to connect. I was stressing for about two weeks beforehand that I would have a hard time getting the electrics sorted but it was very simple in the end. No doubt if I had bought heated seats with a memory function I would still be struggling (and have paid a LOT more).

Thanks. Did you swap over the seat belt connectors and keep the wiring for those attached?

    They look nice condition.  Price?

They appear to be in very good condition. I paid £300 which seemed like a fair asking price so didn't haggle at all.

Look darker than the 986 grey, but then if you've just picked them up I guess you have a use for them.

Yes, I am going to replace my 986 standards. I would say that my seats are leather and have taken on a bit "character" over the years and are slightly darker than the plastic which is definitely lighter than these.
