Question: if the brake system has been completely drained down, can the brake system be bled as normal? I know on more modern cars quite often you have to connect a garage box of tricks to the car and bleed it in a certain manner due to the ABS system…

I have one of these if needed which appears to do what you are suggesting

As for the indy in Keston -I thought they don't actually do their own spannering the setup is purely sales - seem to remember they take the car somewhere else ( somewhere in Surrey) - maybe a sister company or just where their workshops are but I am sure I read they farmed the work out.

Hi Paul, it’s not 911Box. It’s was these people https://www.tollgatetyres.com.  They have a reasonable reputation, have been their a while and owner seemed a decent bloke who owns a 911 and won’t let anyone touch a Porsche if he is not in. I chased a couple of times but he didn’t get the quote for the parts I wanted.
Are you going to either of the Tipec things this weekend?

I go to Precision & they're miles away from me, but well worth the journey IMO.

Same here. I drive past many independents to get there. I didn't realise Paragon where around the corner and seem to have an impressive reputation as well but I have been using Precision for a few years now.

I am taking it to Precision Porsche. They are just around the corner from me. A little pricey but I worth it I reckon.

I used them to set-up my 996 and was very pleased with it. When you say just around the corner, are you aware they have moved?

The last time I took it to Kwikfit and while they got it sort of okay - not 100% - I do think a proper alignment will work wonders to the feel and performance of the car.

Who are you going to use for the alignment? I used quick fit to check the alignment and it looks like its not quite right but the guy doing it didnt inspire confidence unfortunately.

I was going to use a local place in Keston but they didnt follow through with the quote to supply the parts needed (I was going to change rear control arms and coffin arms before doing it as they are looking a little aged) Paul recommended a place near him and I am thinking of getting him to do it all.

With an AGM Battery on a car with automatic start stop, one should not connect the -ive terminal of the charger direct to the battery - it should go to the chassis ground.

there is a shunt (essentially a coulomb counter) on the negative battery lead - and if you connect a charger direct to the negative posts of the battery, this is bypasses - which messes up things.

Sounds like a bit of a mine field to me! I recall people talking about having a battery coded to a car and I am so glad I have a 986! Good luck

  7. Voltage is in a relationship with current and resistance. Did a lot of sorting out of dodgy earths on my triumphs and TVRs. I was very surprised to have to do it on my 996. Do you get the same results if you connect the charger direct to the battery?

Well it's not that, now I have the carpet up I can see it trickling down from the centre so I am guessing it must be the heater matrix top cover/ gasket/seal.  If it ever stops raining I will look from the outside.

Certainly the weather at the moment for leaks! Good luck

Removed water pump in preparation to fitting new pump as a precaution. Old pump, "looked" like the original and showed signs of leakage around that area.

Is the engine out? It was a bit of a faff changing the alternator on my 987 and from memory, the water pump is probably similar?

  10. In terms of what I have done with my 986, we had a rare out break of clear sky and took it out for a good drive and thoroughly enjoyed winter roof down motoring. I do wonder why some people SORN them for the winter?

it was fun driving the Boxster after running around a lot in my sons MX5. If people have never driven one, they are brilliant. The Boxster feels heavy in comparison. Not as fast but that makes you to drive it harder all the time!

hi Graham.  I have had it apart for so long. I can’t remember exactly but from memory, remove the triangular, strengthening plate and rear underfloor panel, and I think you can access all three. There are two water hoses that slightly interfere with the front engine mount but the mount can be wiggled past. If you want to do yours at some stage when I have finished then let me know.

Thanks Peter. Sounds doable and I would love to pop over and put the car on the ramp if that’s what you mean?

  12. Thanks @ATM  I changed my 996 mounts to the solid rubber ones and noticed a good improvement in the drive of the car and also, the gear change. On my TVrs, engine mounts were like service parts and it sounds like the front one does more of the work on the 986 than these units. My garage is very narrow and it’s the only job I have been able to do on the car without moving it out!

Removed the front engine mount this afternoon with a view to fit the Powerflex add on Poly, "fill in" bushes to strengthen and firm up the original. Of course my original mount is shot, split in 2 places! Will return the Poly bush add ons and purchase a new Poly mount...Typical!

Hi Peter, is that front mount and the two gearbox mounts fairly accessible if the car was not apart like yours currently is?

  14. If you like a black car, there is a good looking car for sale on Facebook 986 uk group before it gets advertised on chargeable places like autotrader. I don't know the car or the owner but, colour aside, it looks like a car worth investigating. Assuming you are looking for a car, good luck with your search.

rear sills are problems for the MK1 and Mk3 - mk2 is primarily front chassis rails that dissolve - you may be lucky that someone has already replaced or treated

It was the Mk3 I researched and found this one up a short walk up the road in the cross over year when searching by year! Probably best I have a little look...

The mk2 and 2.5 MX5’s are notorious for rusting front chassis rails. Virtually every one I looked at had MOT advisories for it

I haven't checked the front chassis rails in any detail. Most focus on the rears which seem fine.
