Hi. There's two Black's on Auto Trader.

I think they maybe two cars that aren't on the register.

I don't currently own one, but I am looking around. I'd ideally like a PASM equipped car, and definitely a Manual.

Would should I look out for? Are there any problems or issues specific to the Black?

    Thanks in advance.

There is nothing specific to the black editions to consider re maintenance over a standard S.

The first car linked does not disclose its number, there are a couple of Manual, sport chrono, PASM cars it could be from the list or it could be a new entry.

The second car is a new entry:

    #402

    Manual

    Sport Seats

Multi function steering wheel (instead of the sport wheel)

    Rear parking sensors, heated seats

None, Bose, Chrono, PASM, full leather

If your looking be careful of the one advertised without the original spyder wheels, they would cost a fortune to replace, one of the lightest / best looking Porsche wheels ever and a sin to remove them from a black edition 😉

  2. #257 has come back up for sale on Pistonheads.

some alarm bells ringing with this one as the both the description and Spyder wheels are missing. I think this is since the last time it was sold as I would have noticed the wheels striaght away 🤔

Its advertised as sports seats and full leather interior options and it has neither.

There are usually a few explanations and probably a combination in this case but:

    - dealer does not know what porsche sport seats and full leather are (easy to spot if you know what to look for)

    - dealer does not know spyder wheels are standard and a main feature of the Black Editions as they are very expensive. They do actually describe the correct 18inch wheels

The reason for the errors could be:

    - previous owner knew the value of the wheels and removed them to sell seperately (sigh)

    - previous owner did not like 19inch wheels and changed for 18inch (unlikely as they are very light and descent ride quality), the car was setup for them from factory

    - leather probably just an error but the advert expressly states >£14k of options. The car is not even close to that level of options (despite the norm of including PDK as a £3k option lol). If the dealer has used the build sheet and it included £14k of options then the car has been seriously messed with. The usual and only reason to change a leather dashboard for a none leather one is following crash damage

In summary I'd feel aggrieved if I bought this car as advertised and found out the most desirable options stated on the car are not and its missing the all important spyder wheels

  3. Definately worth fitting, I would not run a PASM car without one now…….that is why they are so popular.

If you use man maths they are very cheap ie they sell for £800-£900 second hand, I paid £750 from memory. As they have no moving parts they do not wear out and I would expect to get £800 for mine if I was to sell it (the car is a keeper though) so would have got paid £50 to use it 🤣

One just sold for £500 on 911UK (for a 9x7.2 or 997.1 turbo) but as you can imagine sold very very quickly as was way underpriced by the seller

nb re the software, if your into that sort of thing then its very fun to use. You can connect the controller up to a laptop via the USB and play around with the settings live, I did just that to get sport mapping just to my liking. You play around with a base mapping for your model of car and there are plenty of different ones you can download to try from the website. I only use sport on fast road runs but they are often out with 500+BHP cars, on those runs cornering tends to be more important than BHP so its so nice to actually be able to run the car with a firmer suspension, keep my teeth in and the nimble boxster can easily hold its own on B roads, it allows the steering feel to really come into its own as your not as distracted with an overly harsh suspension ie it allows full use the 987 best features, handling, nimbleness and steering on the twisties….its definately added value in that regard.

My understanding is otherwise; the Sport mode on the 987.1 only remaps the throttle pedal but does nothing to the engine map. A gentle push in Sport mode gives the same signals to the ECU as a firmer push in Normal mode. However, as you said, I could be wrong too!

That is my understanding ie no change to the actual engine map used, just the input signal from the pedal to it, on a .2 DFI engine car there are two different engine maps.

  5. Extract from my journal when I installed the DSC in my 987.2…..

“So thats it job done........ the first thing you notice is that the DSC unit is more flexible in its settings ie the OEM unit switches on both PASM and Sport together, you can then switch off PASM if you just want sport engine mapping. As OEM Sport PASM is not driveable on english roads this was always a pain as you had to switch on Sport then swithc off PASM. Also when you turn off the ignitition all revert to OFF. With the DSC controller Sport and PASM are completely seperate settings, so you can just turn on Sport without PASM if you like. The unit also remembers the last PASM setting when ignition is turned off.”

nb settings for both sport throttle and PASM on/off are fully displayed on the binnacle display as per OEM

Also to clarifies some of the points above PASM and Sport Chrono where 2 mutually exclusive options ie you could have either or both. Also I always say don’t assume Sport Chrono is a waste of time on a manual car, it makes a massive difference especially on a .2 S car 😉

  6. In simple terms the OEM PASM controller do not adjust each shock independently, the DSC is a lot smarter and controllers each corner independently based on individual parameters for each shock, those parameters being fully configurable via software should you wish to adjust them. From memory the parameter ranges are also wider than the OEM controller allow.

I would never have a road Porsche without PASM, I would never have PASM without DSC

You guys just missed out on an absolute bargain 9x7.2 DSC that went for £500 on 911UK……massively underpriced by the seller and not surprisingly sold very quickly lol

all the info you need is on their website

  7. Yesturday I got the boxster out of storage, I can’t remember when I put it in there (I usually take a pic to remind myself) but I think it was end of October so c6 months ago. I checked the tyre pressures (I usually over inflate them slightly for storage) and they just needed capsized each. Took it off the trickle charger and it started first turn of the starter motor. Cars can be a little rough for a couple of minutes after 6 months storage but was as smooth as anything from initial idle…..massive bonus was I had a full tank of super unleaded, felt like I’d won the lottery 🤣

This morning the boxster passed its MOT with no advisories , I enjoyed a sausage and egg barm whilst waiting 😁

DVLA had updated straight away and so I was able to road tax as soon as I got home …..all set for the NW 991uk crew meet tomorrow….

The car was a little dusty from storage and I had not cleaned it before putting in there, with rain forecast all afternoon I managed to give it a bit of spit and polish in perfect overcast conditions…….given next door are in the middle of getting a new roof and dust everywhere I fitted the outdoor cover :)

  8. There are no issues with the steering as it does the job but loses most of the feedback that the superb chassis can provide…..it was one of the highlights of the 987. I mention it as its not something thats obvious when you first drive a 981/718 compared to a 987 as your senses are drawn to all of the other changes in cabin etc………eg during a test drive. It took me going backwards to a 987 from a 981 to fully appreciate what had been lost in the steering feedback, in fact I was shocked by the difference. The change suits most cars which try to isolate a driver from the road but in a sports car something is lost, its a generic issue not just Porsche.

Going to service it and keep it for a while longer while keeping an eye on the market.

I think a 718 GTS 2.5 is looking to be the one next, I know it’s not a flat 6 but it offers an awful lot otherwise with great steering and interior and a must have option of PTV as standard which is a great.

We love the 981 GTS but they are too expensive for what they offer IMO and I worry prices will drop swiftly when the market settles down.

The 718 won’t be depreciation free by any means but I think it will be a great car to hold on to and enjoy for a few years. Looking for a decent spec one in a slightly rarer colour :)

Thanks for all the advice we will get there in the end :)

Re the steering, one of the big pluses for me was moving back to the old steering feel. I only realised how much had been lost when I moved back……make sure you drive one especially if its got the steering plus which is very light for slow manoeuvres but either way feels a lot more remote when driving……you will notice it when moving from a 987 but often not at first as on a quick drive you will be more aware of cabin changes etc………It should not put you off getting a newer car but don’t assume everything is better 😉

  10. With that mileage and spec its a c£30k car retail……so anything around £24-25k private/trade in is a decent price IMHO

ps I did the opposite to what your looking to do and came from a very high spec 981GTS……….one of the most fun cars I have every had with one of the best sound tracks of any car ever……….but I enjoy the 987-2 ownership experience more 😉
