it will more than likely also remove the remains of your UV coating

My understanding, having worked in commercial lighting is that the UV resistance isn't from a coating but rather is inherent in the make-up of the material. It is in a constant state of degradation. Once it gets to the age of our older cars' lights it needs something with UV protection in a coating or the like to slow or halt the UV affected degradation

  2. Just bought a shedload of suspension kit, belts etc for my daily. Used their service where for £4 you give them your VIN no. & they'll check the parts for comparability. Worth it as there were variants that needed changing prior to order.

I took advice on some of the after market brands before buying too. Some have better rep than others.

  3. Coughed up for an intermediate service at Lorimer & Findlay today. Front brakes stripped & cleaned + brake fluid changed.

Front brakes were needing that. Braking performance vastly improved on journey home.

That's my service record fully up-to-date now ready for the next owner when I get round to seriously selling it next month. Short break to Ireland's wild atlantic coast planned for w/c 17th April, then it'll be up for sale proper in the usual places when we get back. Sad times.

  4. I recently replaced the windscreen washer pump on my 987. Spent £11 on a Meyle after-market pump rather than the £90 Porsche wanted. Simple enough job.

In the video above, you'll note that the container is empty. If yours isn't, then be prepared for it spilling over you & your floor

  5. I'm a member of Tipec Scotland. Like @Topbox says it depends on the enthusiasm of the region. There's a great team in Scotland organising events for us. Anything from a breakfast run in a fortnight's time up through Perthshire, through weekend drives with a 2 night hotel stay & this year I believe they're organising flights over to visit Porsche for their 75 yr anniversary celebrations. So a mix of things to suit varying budgets.

I've done a weekend & a couple of runs & lunches with them before. Quite a relaxed group. Very mixed range of cars from £5K boxsters up to £130K 911s in the group.

Worth a punt for £40 for the year to see if it's your thing I reckon. The glossy bi-monthly magazine has some nice articles, although more & more I'm discovering the limits of my own enthusiasm for all things Porsche (I really just like the 2 seat mid-engine platform more than I care for the brand).

Unusal one; yesterday and this morning my car was iced up and needed a scraping of the screen before setting off. However, the driver's door window wouldn't drop to clear the canvas roof as it was frozen up and I didn't want to pull it clear. I got aroung this by using the long press to open the roof a bit which allowed the door to open, but has anyone else got an alternative solution?

Should be fine to open it. There's enough flex in the glass for that (987 here). I've used the heel of my fist to dunt the window a few times along the base where it meets the door & found that's generally enough to free the glass so that it pops down. Careful when closing the door if it hasn't; you can push the top of the glass over enough to close, at least from the outside.

  7. Was going through a period of bangernomics for 15-20 years, buying cars under £1000 & punting them on or scrapping when repairs might prove hefty.

As a kid, I'd always admired 2 seater rag tops, MG Midgets, MGB Roadsters, Triumph Spitfires, etc., but once I was of age, cost, insurance, cost of running/restoring were always prohibitive. Approaching 50, I worked out I could finally have that 2 seater ragtop. I looked at MX5s, but something drew me to the MR2 Mk3. Bought one, loved it, cherished it over 6 years, tinkered with it, joined a club, made it better with bracing & new suspension. Put a 2zz in it, drove it into a hedge 🤣.

About that time our office shut down & for some reason the directors liked me & gave me more of a pay-off than they needed to. Test drove a couple of S2000's as potential replacement/upgrade for the MR2. Then tested a 987 & once round a roundabout I was pretty much sold. Lovely car. Owned it 3 years now but dog means it'll be sold this year once the sun comes out.

got my insurance renewal through, happy as its dropped £60 to £166 fully comp

    happy with that

Funnily enough, just insured mine with Churchill too @ £207 fully comp for the year. Worth noting that's with my Mrs on the policy. Taking my Mrs off the named drivers added £40 to the premium! 😐

What can I expect to pay if / when I chose to get the coolant crossover pipes done at a decent specialist?  (All 8 pipes).

Paid £640 at a specialist in Glasgow 18 months back. Specialist at the other end of town wanted nearer £1100 but he was plying me with warnings of "once you start with 6 pipes at the front it soon grows till you need to do all 14 pipes". Didn't care for his flim-flam, nor his expectant call the next day telling me he had a lift available now. Half expected an Amway pitch to follow up.

Interested to hear what prompted you to change the handbrake shoes or ifit was just part of the brake service.

My handbrake comes up around 5 or 6 clicks and is solid, but it doesn't hold the car very well on a slope.

Handbrake shoes weren't looking great & since the discs wwere being replaced...

My handbrake was the same. Don't know how to describe them but the little links at the drums were seized & needed freeing up. May be the same with you.

Dismantled the washer reservoir to find the failed grommet. Ordered new grommet from Porsche Centre, £13.60. Should arrive on Thursday then the reassembly fun begins. ☺️

Well. Replaced the grommet. All well & good till I put the scooshers on. Still leaking from same point but now I can see it's not the grommet but the pump itself that's leaking.

Grommet was looking perished too so just as well to replace that.

Ah, well. Back to Mr. P's parts dept for a new pump I suppose.

  12. Yesterday now, but replaced the ball sockets that pull the roof up & down so got that working again. Replaced the elastic on the passenger side at the same time so that beds correctly in the frame once more. Replaced a brake light bulb but obviously haven't done it right as still getting the same warning on the dash. Filled the wiper fluid but have a leak somewhere so will need to get the wheel arch liner off & get a closer look.

All bits of work that have been on the to-do list for a week or so but weather & keeping an eye on the new pup all keeping me away from it.

A bit similar, but different, to the above so wondering if anyone can shed light on possibility of window microswitch(es) needing replaced.

When I "wind" the window down, everything works fine, but generally it's reluctant to move back up with the switch (doesn't move). Have to try it a few times or hold it before it eventually decides it wants to go back up. I was going to check the switch on the door in the faint hope it might just be that. However, when parking up the other day & raising the roof back up it happened again. As usual both windows dropped 2-3" to allow the roof back up. Operated the latch & heard/saw the passenger window go back up. As I left the car & shut the driver's door I noted that the driver's window had remained 2-3" down.

Got back in the car & again the window swtch took a few attempts before the window raised itself.

It works on the handle to drop & raise the short distance no problem when the door is opened & closed. It's just that intermittent reluctance to raise on the switch & now occasionally when operating the roof.

    Any thoughts/ideas?

  14. I had the Kumho Ecsta PS91's on mine. Excellent for grip in the dry, no issues in the wet (although I'm loathe to push in wet). Wore out fairly quickly - poss my driving style?. My rears looked down to about 2-3mm after 7000 miles. Price was about 2/3 that of premium brands though.

  15. Numerous after market systems available, prices vary.

Cheapest & most often fitted would appear to be the Top Gear valved exhaust (most seem to consider the non-valved just too noisy day-to-day) @ about £1000 last I looked. It's a Chinese manufactured system so you'll see the same thing from a number of suppliers around the same price mark.

Otherwise there's Dansk, Remus, Fabspeed & various others that will likley start about £1500.
