    Black interior and a tobacco-ish.

    Thank you so much!  Really appreciate the effort to do them and helps make the decision that I've been struggling with 👍👍

    From the red tin, tricky to get that looking ok from that tiny sample. So this is very much a guesstimate.

    These are awesome - thank you so much for taking the time to do them!

    @timbobalobox, is there a build guide available? I built several kit cars before being tempted into Porsche ownership, but your build is definitely tempting me back in!

    Cheers

    Nothing official I'm afraid - Iconic (who produced the body) just do a supply only, with the overwhelming majority being conversions they do in house, with the donor supplied by the customer.  There's only one other guy who's done the kit themselves as far as I know.

    Having said that, the owner of Iconic is immensely helpful and having never done something like this myself before, it's quite straight forward.  It can be very fiddly in places but it's all logical.  The real skill is getting the gaps correct which was a job I left to the painters!

    If you were thinking about doing one I can share more images in detail 👍

    What about a lighter metallic blue.
    This is a lovely colour in the flesh, but maybe something a little lighter, more silver/blue

    One of Iconic's customers from Belgium has just had theirs done in the classic Porsche light blue, they've also had the interior re-trimmed in tan which looks lovely!

    If you are coming back to your original idea I suspect you will be very happy long term with that choice, good luck  Very generous of you to share this most personal, subjective, but hopefully enjoyable decision.

    It's so hard to get it right!

    I sems a big reveal once painted, rather than any more drip feeding, at least I hope so!

    :D

    I'll share the spray outs then won't say which one I've gone for - it's such a subjective thing and hard to appreciate the colours on the computer screen too

    .....any updates on colours........????????

    I picked a few more options last week - the spray outs should be done today/tomorrow hopefully

    I've gone for a another couple of greens, a petrol blue (my original idea), some tobaccos and a metallic red

    Think these really need to be considered in daylight. Given the nerve and skill put into this project may you have some regret later if a slightly bolder, more creative colour scheme is not fully explored???

    That's the thing - one of the colours that really suits this homages is the seal grey metallic, which is exactly the colour it was before!

    Because of the shape (and the fact it's fibre glass) it needs to be metallic, and as map said above the body is a lot bigger than the original so darker colours don't suit well.

    There are some amazing heritage colours - a personal favourite is Tobacco Metallic which is a really rich bronze hue seen on the original 930s. That might work on this shape - that said I think the options being considered will work well on this car - especially with the black interior.

    Capture

    It's funny you say tobacco - I've been looking at this hue too, in fact those colours in the flesh I sampled have a hint of the above as well.

    In my eye the swatch above looks better than the one on the car though!  With some fleck in the paint with the black interior would look lovely

    I honestly keep coming back to this...!  I think if I had tan interior (which I was initially looking for) I'd definitely go for it

    Any time I see one of these, its grey. Sorry but I was hoping for something a little more adventurous. But at the end of the day, I'm not spending the cash so go with your gut. Look at the samples outside on a cloudy day, that's how it will be seen most often.

    It's really hard to get it right - the samples are more green than grey to be fair and don't photograph particularly well

    I think you should re-think the whole 'grey' thing.

    The 356 had Polyantha Red which could be updated with a bit of metallic/pearl to really make it pop (I hate that phrase but it serves a purpose).

    I'm going to go back to the paint supplier next week and pick up some more samples - maybe red could be my wild card!

    @timbobalobox - very exciting.

    How do those colours look under a bright clear sky?  As you say artificial light throws all sorts of hues into paintwork.

    Massively different to be honest!  The painter is being quite honest (whilst respecting personal taste) about how it looks and will work on the type of car.

  14. The paint swatches are back - I'm even more confused than I was before...!  They look really different in different lights.  I think I'll go back and get some others, I want to get it right!

    Mostly artificial light;

    InkedIMG_4988_LI

    Day light;

    InkedIMG_4989_LI

    Close up and curved (important as the car is so curved)

    InkedIMG_4990_LIInkedIMG_4991_LIInkedIMG_4992_LI

    So far for me it's number 1.  In order to make the body look good, I need to steer away from flat colours apparently, ensuring it's got metallic in.  That's a bit of a shame because the original colour scheme weren't as shiny due to the paint technology at the time, but I guess it's still a homage as opposed to a replica

  15. Oooo primer :D

    It's the first part of the process they use to identify any areas they're not happy with, and it's nice to see it coming together.

    I also made a selection of three colours that he's going to spray sample for me - I'll upload the options when I collect them later this week.

     I'll keep you posted 👍

  16. Painter has said should be back end of Feb 😀

    I also need to go this Friday to the paint supplier to confirm the colour…

    <biting nails with pressure of getting the colour just right>

    These people?

    He and his team are wizards when it comes to the 356. They have a twin turbo flat four option which sounds manic - they used it in their MOMO build inspired by the 935s of the 70s.

    About 5 years ago I was lucky enough to meet and speak with him (I asked an open question and listened intently to his fulsome answer - and then another open question, a considered response and so on) he seems very genuine and is undoubtedly a highly accomplished engineer.

    That's the one - I've heard nothing but good things about Rob and the team there, particularly the standard of finish they provide.

    I'm hoping for that kind of look, but obviously a homage as opposed to being a true 356

  19. Small update...

    Spoken to the painters - they're stacked out at the minute, but I should have it back in 6 weeks (so back end of Feb (ish!))

    They're going to send me some photos this week which I'll upload.

    Just need to empty the garage of all of the junk accumulated through Christmas :D
