  1. Sorry I can’t answer your question but I can tell you what I do after the car has been idle for a few weeks/months. I remove the fuel pump relay fuse (C4 on my 2002 BS Tip) crank the engine over a few times then replace fuse and fire the car up, it always starts nice and quietly as the oil has circulated around the engine.

What have I done to my Boxster today. I put more petrol in it ( again)!!!! 😂  and then it made me smile and giggle like a child as I changed into 2nd gear and the rear wheels spun up. Letting it  slip out a little bit  , accelerating upto 6#mph and then just eased right back off as it fell back down to 40mph and carried on poodling along at at 40 quite content.

I know it will take of like a little rocket ship and then just be comfortable drive along with the traffic and not feeling any kind of need to go mad in it.

Roof was down ( it’s a convertible and isn’t raining , it’s the law right ? , heater on, and got a few smiles from people .

Oh getting the Boxster was the best thing ever. only a couple of weeks in and Have had a lot of much more powerful and expensive cars over the years but such a different feeling in this and looking forward to keeping this for a long time. Lots of smiles for not many pounds per miles.

    What might I do tomorrow/near future? ,

more washing, machine polishing, wheels refurbed, rear tyres very soon as plenty of treat but are old, new disks and pads all round ( no point in wheels looking good if the disks aren’t looking peredtzr. Going to strip the callipers and rebuild with new seals, pistons and paint , new decals and new hoses so not only will be top notch, will look snazzy.  Annoyingly I now have an urge for a new soft top in maroon red to match the leather as I think it will look pretty sweet ( nothing wrong with current roof)

i think I need a cheaper hobby, but today no maintenance on the car, just pure enjoyment , so that’s what I did with the Boxster today! 😬

They are addictive, such great cars!

  3. I replaced my front and rear anti toll bar bushes and bought them from my local OPC, they were not very expensive and they will obviously sell you the proper size for your car. In my experience it is always worth checking your local Porsche centre for any new parts needed and they usually give you a 10% to 15% discount if you ask

You don't really get a choice. If Euro4 was the applicable standard in 2001, that's the only one the form will accept for that year, regardless of actual emissions.

Ok I understand now thanks for your help

    European cover I presume?

Interested to hear who people are using for this and how much it costs for these older cars?

I insure my car with saga and I am adding European breakdown/recovery to my policy which will increase the price by about £50 but this gives me a full years cover as opposed to a one trip cover

I've been looking into this as well as I have a Spain / Portugal / France trip planned for may. if you are going near any big French cities you'll need an emissions sticker to avoid fines in clean air zones. It only costs a few euros and comes in the post. Check out https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/ It's based purely on year so it doesn't matter than my 986 is Euro6 compliant - it's a Euro4 sticker or nothing.

My Boxster S is a 2001 so to get this right when applying for the clean air sticker I should put Euro 4 into the form which gives a environmental category of 2 is this correct?

I've made 4 European trips in my 2000 986S with no issues.

Space saver pressure is a good one you've notes that many miss.

Think you've got is about as covered as you can for a well engineered 20+ year old car.

Hi 1/2cwt thanks for your reply, as you say these are well engineered cars. I guess I am just looking for a little reassurance.

Focus on the things that stop you dead in your tracks eg cooling system

I always put my Boxster off the road and tucked up in the garage in the winter. I always put it on axle stands so that I can inspect the underneath checking all the hose pipes etc last year I changed the thermostat and going by the cars service history it had a new water pump 10K miles ago. Thanks for your reply.

Afternoon, I would love to hear peoples input on this also as I'm driving to Nürburgring in August this year, also done the service, coil pack, spark plugs, filters, control arms front and back will be done also and the thermostat, water pump and belt to be changed before I go. maybe its just a look of the draw if the car makes it back or not 😂

I feel that you can only do so much then it’s in the lap of the gods!!

  10. Hi all I am planning a road trip to the south of France in June and in preparation I have done the following jobs on my Boxster S :- changed engine oil and filter (used Mobil 5W-50), new air and pollen filters, new spark plugs, had the starter motor and alternator reconditioned and fitted new serpentine belt, fitted new AOS, cleaned throttle body, maf sensor and intake pipes, fitted new calliper bleed nipples and changed brake fluid, fitted new a/c drier and had a gas refill, inflated space saver spare tyre to 60PSI. Took out breakdown and recovery insurance.

Is there anything else you can think of that I should do to make the car as reliable as possible ( I would quite like to get there and back in the Boxster 😂)

    Cheers

  11. Not always there is an auto electrical shop near where I stay that will recondition your original starter/alternator if you drop it off at their shop and they will recondition within a couple of days. This will work for me as my Boxster is  garaged for the winter if you’re car is a daily could be more of a problem.

  12. Would you not consider getting your starter motor reconditioned which would be a lot cheaper than buying new plus you still have an oe starter in your car.

I am planning a trip to the South of France next year in my 986 S and I plan to get my SM reconditioned for peace of mind

  13. Hi all

Changing my rear discs and pads on my 2002 Boxster S can anybody tell me if the anti vibration shims can be re-used even though the adhesive that sticks them to the pads is gone after I removed them from the old pads or are they even needed? New shims will cost nearly as much as I paid for the new discs and pads

Have you got the loom from MDB Diagnostics?

I bought this loom from MDB Diagnostic it was not very expensive and the different wires of the loom had a tag on them telling you which wire went where. I found it made the wiring of the cruise control very straightforward

  15. I sent my steering wheel to a company called Edition9 in Bolton and dealt with a guy called Darren. They fitted the Mercedes AMG paddles to my wheel and arranged the wiring so that it was plug and play for when you refit the steering wheel. I think it took about a week for them to do the conversion and as I said before it’s the best mod I have done on my Boxster. I drive my car in manual mode the majority of time so that I can decide when to swap the cogs plus you always have two hands on the wheel when pushing on.

  16. You can also fit Merc paddle shifts to the steering wheel and use these for gear changes so much better than the standard tiptronic buttons. You can also drop down two gears automatically with two blips of the paddles. I would say that fitting the paddle shifts was definitely the best mod I agave done to my Boxster

Well I decided to order the Fabspeed Porsche 986 Boxster Supercup Street Exhaust System with Sport Catalytic Converters and black satin tips from USA, pricey, but excited to get it on.

I have heard a few videos with the Fabspeed Supercup  fitted to 986 Boxster’s and I thought they sounded fantastic. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the Fabspeed after having it fitted
