Can I ask which model of continental you bought and does it allow streaming from your phone (mine is an iPhone).

the CD23 just seems to light up and none of the buttons work at all - I’m sick of Whitney Houston 😄

I’ve seen a lot units for sale on eBay from Germany but no idea if I need a wiring harness.

bergvill seems expensive compared to eBay

    I bought the

    Continental TR7412UB-OR

this does not have dab but you can stream your music (I also have an iPhone) and make/recieve  phone calls.

Bergvill are perhaps more expensive than eBay but they are a reputable company that quite a few Porsche owners have used.

The Continentals can be bought on eBay but I don’t think they  come from the UK so you will need to add import charges and VAT on top of their prices

I have heard back from them (they're quite quick) and they confirmed that you cannot connect two phones simultaneously. That's not a deal breaker in all honesty. Reading the installation guide on their website it seems that their model TRD7412 also has the facility of dimming the backlight on the unit.

"The new model TRD7412 head unit have the possibility to dim the LCD backlight, depending on the Illumination
power input and a menu setting. In practise, this unit can dim the LCD backlight when it is dark and the lights are
    on
    ."

I guess I would still have to ensure it is correctly wired but at least I know it can be done.

Yeah as I said before they are very quick at getting back to you with answers to any questions you have. Was it Tore who replied to you? He appears to be the company owner and seems very hands on.

Also, sorry to be a pain but does the lighting on the unit dim with the binnacle lights?

Unfortunately not the Continentals do not dim with the binnacle lights and I don’t know if they can be paired with more than 1 phone so I would email them and ask the question, they replied to me pretty quickly when I contacted them. Having lived with mine for about a month now I am still very happy with the Continental and anyone who has seen it fitted to my Boxster has commented that it looks stock  which is the look I was trying to achieve

  4. I have a tiptronic Boxster S and absolutely love it I also fitted the Mercedes paddles to the steering wheel and to me it transformed the car. I mostly drive in manual mode and shift with the paddles but if I am in traffic I let the box do it’s own thing in auto mode which in my eyes gives you the best of both worlds. I have also owned a manual Boxster S and a manual Cayman S and to be honest I prefer my current Tiptronic Boxster but then I am in my sixties now so don’t know if that has anything to do with it

That looks awesome and is a welcome change from all the blingy/ cr@ppy head units I normally see. Mine is good (takes two mobiles, plays via Bluetooth, via Spotify (not that I use it) and can also do USB and AUX. It just looks....Zeph.

Once I have the aircon properly sorted (and the bumper retaining strip changed) then I will definitely look at this. Proper sound was next on the list (left speaker is awfully crackly and temperamental) and the antenna is just rubbish.

Just as a matter of interest, where did you buy the head unit from?

I bought the head unit from a Norwegian company called Bergvill F/X they were really good to deal with and it only took 2 days from ordering to delivery. They have a good website and a choice of different Continental units for sale some with DAB, CD player etc. Their prices seemed ok but you do have to pay an import tax and good old UK vat. I also bought an adapter harness from them to make the fitting plug and play.

Excellent. If you can stream, does that mean you can also get phone navi directions through the speakers?

Haven’t tried that yet but don’t see any reason why not as I have a navigation app on my phone. I will give it a go next time I am out in the car and let you know

  7. Hi all just fitted a Continental head unit to my Boxster, I can now stream music from my iPhone and make/receive phone calls. Very easy job and I love the way it just looks stock which is why I picked the Continental head unit. Sound quality is a huge improvement from the factory Becker unit. I am a happy bunny

    Yayyyyyyyyyy🥳🥳🥳

I had the equivalent of the French mot at the end of today, which was the last step to being able to legally drive the car on the road, and it passed with flying colours! I stayed at the testing station whilst they carried out the test, somewhat nervously standing on the sidelines for what seemed like an eternity! First the rolling road to test all the brakes, then emissions test, headlight checks etc etc, the activity seemed to go on forever.

At the end of the test, the technician remarked on what great condition the car was in and said it passed well. I asked if there was anything borderline, and very amazingly he said no, all was good. I still frankly cannot believe it actually. I gave it a major blast before the test in the hope of assisting the emissions test, and, well, what can I say!

Now for a beer to celebrate! 🤩

Thanks once again for all the help, comments and feedback along the way - BoXa has been a really tremendous resource for me 👍👍👍

Congratulations on passing the MOT test it’s always a bit nervy waiting to hear if it’s thumbs up or thumbs down at the MOT station. You have meticulously worked your way through the car and have now got your just reward!!!!

  9. Recently retrofitted cruise control and then got it coded to my Boxster S so to test it out drove down to the Mother in laws in Newcastle today, about 150 miles cruise control on while on the motorway and road with average speed cameras. Found it very relaxing way to  gobble up the motorway miles. I plan to take the Boxster to the South of France next year so it will be cc on all the way on the route de sol.

Thanks to the nice people on this forum for the instructions and advice to help me with the retrofit.

This was the standout car for me! Beautiful 40 year old, 911 SC. Just as nice on the inside.

I was also at the show on Sunday and I agree with you about that outstanding 911 I think it came second in the voting for best car and what a great turnout for the event I think this year was a record attendance

I've PM'd you back.  My experience was about 40 hour research to get the confidence and knowledge to do it including building the loom to run back to the fuse box and DME, then about 4 hours actual work.  Taking it steady and following teh instruction and mine worked ftst time.  Also @John2000 followed on doing it on his car from my postings.  A 2003 model year onwards car (sorry I thought it was 2001 onwards so may have mis led you) should take much less time as less connecting pins to insert into existing multiway plugs, is yours a face lift car but registered in 2002 but still 2003 model year, if not instructions are as per the linked How To.

Yeah thanks for the PM my car was registered in November 2001 so is a MY2002 and going by the instructions above it says you should not run a wire from the cluster to the DME in 2000 to 2002 cars as they don’t need the wire to light up the cruise control light in the dash hence my question

  12. 1 hour ago, ½cwt said:

There is not a kit as such.  All the info you need is in a thread in the How To section (link below) or in the 101 Projects book.  As yours is a 2002 car it is an easier job as the controller for it is built into the instrument pod so does not require wiring back to the DME in the boot unlike the 2000 and earlier cars.  I also know, if you are not DIY minded, that Revolution Porsche at Leeds will do the work for a reasonable fee Porsche 911 & Boxster Retrofit Cruise Control & On Board Computer (revolution-porsche.co.uk) , although it is a hike from Glasgow.

Thanks 1/2CWT I am fairly confident with mechanical work on my Boxster but I am a bit nervous with electrics but I might give it a go as you can buy ready made cables from a company called MDB diagnostic and coding company and I think it is just a case of running these cables as per their instructions. I think I will also get a quote from Revolution but they don’t quote a price for a pre facelift 986 just for facelift cars

@TGI_J If the 986 is anything to go by you can get all the bits (connector mouldings and pins, you provide the wire) to make up the cruise loom section from an OPC unless it is available as a complete plug in loom section.

I was thinking of fitting cruise control to my 986 but when I phoned the OPC this week they said that there was no kit from Porsche for my car so they would not be able to supply or fit the parts but they could supply the 4 stalk unit needed

Got mine booked in with an Indy next month.

Taxed it & used it yesterday, although I’m not noticeably losing any coolant, there is a white powdery substance around the clip on the top hose which suggests to me that there is a weep. It’s only going to get worse so may as well bite the bullet & at least then I won’t have to worry about it.

Also going to have a preventative water pump change at the same time, it’s done 85k on the original pump & it makes sense to have it changed at the same time when the coolant is drained.

One thing I haven’t decided on yet though is whether to swap the thermostat at the same time for a low temp one, anyone got any thoughts on this?

    Cheers.

I changed my thermostat a few months ago I was thinking of going for the low temp stat but after lots of googling the message I got was that it might be a good idea on 911 cars but no point on Boxsters so on balance and for MOT emissions testing I decided to fit a standard thermostat
