Got one side done!

The stud heads on mine look good in comparison to above (they should) and I cleaned up the threads using and M8 die before loosening the nut.

Just about 'bottled it' though but got a result.

I can tell you from my own personal experience, most tough jobs on a Porsche involve you having to enter the realms of "this may go very wrong" in order to get the job done.

So many times I had to undo seized things with the impression that it would either crack and undo, shear, or something in the vicinity might crack instead and it'd be game over.

As for rust, it's been a few years now since I did material science, but my understanding was that corrosion occurs somewhat due to conductivity.  Water itself (H20) isn't very conductive, if at all - it's the minerals in the water that affect the conductivity of the fluid.   Due to that fact, it's not necessarily the salt that causes corrosion, but the salt water combination.

We did a bit on sacrificial corrosion - in such that you can have a metal in contact with all sorts of corrosion-causing things, but if you conduct that metal (like with an earth strap) to another metal that will corrode quicker/easier, you can sort of transfer the corrosive action through conduction.  An example was that some metal structures have another metal (possibly an iron, or some other carbon steel that's more susceptible) that is buried in the ground, and earthed to the structure - this way, it protects the structure from corroding.

It was all very interesting at the time, and I probably should have paid more attention.  I've oft wondered why it's not used to prevent cars from corroding, but maybe that's the conspiracy...

I had mine replaced (nuts and a few clamps) on both my 986 and 996 at local specialists (Eporsch and Addspeed) as this is a chronic issue for Porsches.

Cost about £80 with VAT and labour. The parts cost less than a tenner but they need an hour to get the b*ggers out.....
