Suspension feeling unsettled

All started on Valentines evening, took the bride out for a meal and also a great excuse to take the Boxster for a blast (so I thought)

Out 25min drive was very unsettled and quite scary at times due to the car lurching about and feeling like I was driving on ice.

I flicked the PASM button between Normal and Sport to try and reset the suspension but made no difference. The next day I checked the tyre pressures, 1 or 2psi out but nothing major. I also re torqued the wheels, all tight ?

Over the next couple of days felt great as normal apart from a rattle from the front droplink. I booked it in for a alignment and they confirmed the geo was out but couldn't adjust the rear as they thought one of the lower arms was twisted and not allowing them to align it correctly. They agreed all was safe and sound but recommended replacing lower rear arms and the front droplinks, but overall the geo wasn't far out.

Over the next couple of weeks the car drove fine but I booked it in for two rear arms, two droplinks and a geo.

Yesterday I got it back, the tech replaced the parts no problem and aligned the car. He concluded it was pretty close but said I needed two new rear camber bolts as he couldn't adjust them 100%.

We both went for a test drive and the car drove and behaved a whole lot better but the steering wheel was left hand down very slightly and the tech reckons it is down to the rear camber bolts. He has agreed to fit the new bolts and do a re alignment free of charge, so happy days I thought?

Took it out tonight and it was so wobbly I wondered if the wheels were loose, seriously I was lucky to get to the local shop. I let the car warm up had a press of the buttons and even bounced it over some speed bumps and it seemed to improve a tiny bit but really really odd.

Im beginning to wonder if it's PASM fault? I'm getting no fault lights but it would make sense if it's not responding correctly that the ride would be bad?

Im wondering if any one can offer any advice or solutions for my problems?

Thanks in advance ?

Now that sounds very strange and unsettling! Sorry I have no idea what it could be, you seem to have checked all the obvious things.

Sounds like it could be something electronic as you say. Good luck with solving the problem.

It is very odd as most the time it handles fantastic but last night it was very scary like an F1 car in wet with no assist on and it was dry!

I think I must have a intermittent sensor or the PASM box is on the way out but it seems hard to diagnose as there is no fault light. I wonder if the PWIS would find a record of the fault or diagnose a faulty sensor?

All the info online seems very thin on PASM and in general doesn't seem to play up very often??

Just spoken to Steve at CMS Porsche and he doesn't think it is an electrical fault. He said if there was a PASM fault a light would be on the dashboard and the system would shut down but he has agreed to do a PWISS check later in the week anyway ?

He said it must mechanical and to check the new lower arms are tight, he also said their story about the lower cam bolts was b@llocks.

Im just round at auto Precsion waiting for them to get it on a ramp and check all is tight.

All is tight but the tech took it for a run and agreed it skipping every where.

He said the cam on the rear bolts has rotted away and the adjustment is well out. He actually wanted me to leave the car as he thought it was un safe to use but I've bought it home as the bolts maybe a couple of days away....

I hope so too!

When he explained the cam washer had rotted away it made more sense and what he said was after they had removed them to change the arms it was impossible to get a correct alignment as the Just aren't adjusting correctly.

Today I dealt with the owner of the specialist garage and I don't think he would of let me collect the car until they were sorted ?

The eccentric bolts are typically a stock part at OPC as thy do often seize. If they don't seize then they may bend or strip as you try to get them out.

Update on the suspension!

All sorted now after having new camber bolts fitted and the car correctly re aligned!

The bolts are about £30 for the pair and I strongly recommend changing them if you are struggling with the alignment on the rear.

It was a laser alignment system that my specialist used, I would of preferred it tracked up on a Hunter but it feels good to me?

It drives and handles perfectly now, thank god it wasn't the PASM playing up. Hopefully this will be the end to my jelly like handling ?

Don't get hung up on Hunter. It's just a manufacturer of branded alignment equipment. Any system as along as it is accurate and calibrated and used by a competent and knowledgeable person is good enough.
