I started looking at 987 but purchased a very in budget 986 because it drove well, felt tight and looked nice compared to other 986 and 987's I drove. RickLS7
I bought my 986 almost seven years ago. I looked at loads of 986 S models and a few 987's but none were as good as the one I eventually bought. Have read many horror stories on here of new owners who bought real pups and faced large bills. Mine was very well maintained, condition is everything on an old car. In seven years all that's gone wrong is a tensioner pulley bearing failure (£50), the plastic balljoint retainer on the bottom of the gearstick failed (£12) and replaced the aircon condensers when they rotted away. I have recently replaced all the brake pads and discs and swapped out the water pump as the old one was 8 years old. Also had a new clutch when the IMS bearing was replaced with the LNE ceramic version, not bad for 7 years ownership. I've looked at quite a few 981's in the last few years but I just cant seem to part with mine. Whatever you decide on, get it checked over by a specialist first and always pick a well maintained car in excellent good condition. The few ££ you save buying something cheap may cost considerably more in the long run. Personally, I would probably shy away from a 15 year old 986 and spend a bit more and find a good 987 and don't discount the base cars as they are all damn good. Agree with most of the above but don’t shy away from older higher mileage cars, as long as they have been maintained to a high standard they will give you years of pleasure.
