Boxstercol
Needing a bit of advice from all you knowledgable folk, asking on behalf of someone else... 99 2.5 986, 69k miles & serviced approx 2k ago. Engine has developed a 'rattle', not so audible on idle but if you start to rev it, the noise becomes quite noticeable. - oil level ok - removed aux belt & started engine, noise still apparent so not water pump or pulley - no fault codes - checked plugs tonight on drivers side (ran out of time to do passenger side), all tight so not a loose plug. - happens when engine up to temp & oil hot. Any ideas??? Cheers ?
the baron
Can you make a recording of it, it’s a bit difficult to diagnose blind.

Newhart
At all RPM or just at certain points? Heat shields can often get rattley.
Lennym1984
Mine has an occasional rattle which I eventually traced back to the n/s cat heatshield. You might also check in the engine bay, one of my hose clips had rusted through
karlp606
Stick a video up matey, I have a slight rattle on the cat shield like OPs above on cold mornings. Are the revs bouncing or sticking?
Boxstercol
Will try & post a video / sound clip of it. Definately not a heat shield, my previous 986 had a heat shield rattle so I know what they sound like. Sounds almost like a sticking tappet, but I would be a little surprised if thats the case as its had a recent oil change. Also, oil is clear, no sign of any bearing wear leaving glitter in the oil.
