Surging at a steady 200rpm

Hi Everyone,

I have a second fault with my car (2005 3.2s tip) If you drive at a steady 2000rpm the car begins to surge and the rev counter will rise/fall by around 250rpm inline with the surging. Anyone any ideas? I suspect a fuelling issue?

TIA

3 weeks ownership = 3 Problems.
1 - Intermittent when pulling away from junctions it feels as if a limiter is kicking in and won't go over 10mph! You have to press/depress the throttle a few times before it accelerates.
2- When driving easy at 2000 rpm it begins to surge and the rev counter goes up/down by around 250rpm.
3- When stationary and rev car to say 2000rpm the car vibrates almost suggesting its off a pot but sounds as if its running on all six

Tried disconnecting the MAF sensor and giving it a run today.............All faults still present , however I thought the engine management light would come on? It didn't. Quickly becoming disillusioned.

As difficult and infuriating as this might be proving for you have you taken the car to a Porsche specialist? I suspect that they will get to the root of these problems (and probably give you a list of forthcoming issues).

Internet car problem diagnosis is about as reliable as internet medical diagnosis.

DON'T.

Within the first 3 months of ownership I have spent just over £4K on repairs (rebuilt suspension, 6 pack, rear brakes and disks, service, gear oil, brakes fluid, and some other small things) but it was worth it. Regardless of the car I drove I have never enjoyed driving, that is until now. Sort it and enjoy the car.

Hi not good news, sounds like your car is hunting and is usually a sign the Tiptronic box is on its way out. I found this out myself with a 986 S Tiptronic. You probably have no warning lights either as this is basically the gearbox slipping. You can drain a small amount of oil from the box and if it is black and smelling burnt you are in trouble. I changed the oil in mine which was found black and burnt, and replaced with new oil and this made the gearbox worse and i had to bite the bullet and bought a used one and swapped it out. If you google Tiptronic and hunting you will find some info.

Hi , this sounds a bit like my Discovery 3 auto , known as gearbox shudder; occured mainly under acceleration uphill.

A common fault with the torque converter / auto gearbox.

A recommended fix albeit a temporary one ( well 20k miles so far) was to add Dr Tranny lube ( yes really !) to the geabox oil. Did this in Jan. and the problem went away.

Someone had similar issues on here and after exhaustive tests time and expense, it was due to the temperature probe, a very cheap fix in the end.

I guess that you mean the gearbox oil temp. probe?

I don't like the sound of it, sounds like £££££££££££££££ .

Menoporsche

Might be a silly question.

How do I introduce it to the box? Wheeler Dealer (Ch. 5) tonight showed a Tiptronic with a sleeping problem that was solved by oil change. The program showed a 986S and this also was a bit of procedure so as I don't have the space and tools will have to go to the garage.

I will buy a tube and do it. Thanks.

Thanks for clarifying.

When I added the Dr Tranny lube;  took the discovery to my local garage and they put it up on the ramp. Opened up where gearbox oil is added, added the lube into the same place. That’s it! Drove home , no more surging, job done.

I may add that this is regarded as a fix not a cure.

Good luck
