JayGee
Does anybody know how to remove the below piece of trim from the a A pillar? It’s like a metal strip covered in rubber that has developed its own camouflage pattern. Don’t want to start pulling on it if there are fasteners involved. Passenger side is fine. If anyone has the part number that would be great. thanks
red rocket
Mine's exactly the same. Always assumed it was the effect of some cleaning product. Check thread above for part no's.
JayGee
Thanks, I think I found it in the parts catalogue 987 537 076 00. Looks like a call to OPC in order. cheers
89rallye
@JayGee i would say your looking about 130 quid for that part, let us know what the opc says
Boxstercol
Have you tried cleaning it with a plastic / rubber cleaner? Mine was the same but restored to an as new condition using Meguiars Ultimate Plastic stuff.
Topbox
Polytrol may well restore to an acceptable condition. https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwj4oaKe3tHgAhWmne0KHfIuDw8YABAAGgJkZw&ae=1&sig=AOD64_0VW3mRpD0QtI1oV1gMcUwX2MAsPQ&q&adurl=https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/polytrol/?gclid%3DEAIaIQobChMI-KGint7R4AIVpp3tCh3yLg8PEAAYASAAEgK0NPD_BwE&ved=2ahUKEwi8sp6e3tHgAhWTUhUIHWZzBuAQ0Qx6BAgOEAE I got a small spray can from amazon for about £8 came in from Germany. Its excellent on black or grey trim.
red rocket
Tried polytrol on mine without success.
JayGee
Thanks chaps, tried AG & Megs rubber trim restorer and GT C4 with no luck. It’s like the discolouration is coming from inside the rubber.
The Caped Crusader
I think you need a product like Platenclene to restore it.
JayGee
So after many products, from proprietary rubber restorers, trim refresh and oils to IPA (not the beer) nothing would shift it so I decided to have a go and plasticoat it. All taped up decided to wet sand the trim with 3000 grit and did a trial 2 inch patch at the bottom near the mirror. With the lightest of pressure, plenty of lube and a wipe down the trim is black, no camouflage pattern, no sanding marks. Decided to switch to a magic eraser sponge to see if this would work and would you believe it, both a pillar trims back to what looks factory fresh. Anyone having the same issue, just get a magic eraser or use the ones that may be sitting in the garage for the last 5 years and save a fortune on products that I’m sure will come in handy some day. detail1
Any pictures? I'm assuming the abrasive nature has flattened it back?
Christopher2110
Just be careful with those magic erasers, sometimes they do more damage than good. For example they’re great at refreshing the leather on your steering wheel but I wouldn’t use it more than once as it starts to strip the colour
frozen
Yes this is a replaceable part - had mine replaced last year - think it's riveted on so non-trivial to replace (my receipt for replacement specified a rivet to re-fix it I presume). mine was going pale on one side of the car - due to sun on that side when I parked it - service guys said it was UV damage to the rubber and not unusual - you can cover it up with various treatments but don't think you can fully permanently restore it - so I went with replacement. JayGee
Piccies, better than what it was, happy with the outcome. i know what you mean about taking care about the erasers, but is soooo much better than it was.

Will probably go over it with Gummipflege afterwards.
JayGee
Just go easy with the eraser. I have some gtechniq c4 which I will try to provide a covering/protection
red rocket
Update: had a go with the magic eraser but found 2000 grit wet & dry seemed to work better. Given a coat with Gummipflege but may need to find something glossier.
