Ticking

Morning,

I’ve got a 2005 987, manual and it seems to have developed a ticking noise. You can only hear it with the window open and seems to be from the driver side rear. It’s not apparent when the car is idle, but I guess it could just be more pronounced when moving. Any ideas?

many thanks

Probably the start of a exhaust leak on joint behind the drivers rear wheel. Get some one to sit in it and rev it and get your head by the rear wheel 👍

Is that easy or pricey to put right? Thanks for the reply.

It isn’t an expensive job in terms of parts, 3 new bolts and a gasket.

Getting the old bolts out is a pig and it may take a tech a while to do it, so it may cost a few hours labour. But it isn’t a specialist job so any trusted mechanic or maybe a exhaust place could do it if you supplied the parts. It is also worth while to do both sides but that is up to you.

But before you order any parts or book it in definitely get narrowed down to a exhaust leak. Mine was ok on tick over but the minute I moved it there was a tick tick putt putt noise, which I could hear more clearly by my fence.

I have taken mine to Halfords before for one of their free check overs knowing full well they can’t supply the parts but they told me where my exhaust was leaking for free 😉

To be fair I’ve had that job done fair recently. I’ve read everything from a stone stuck in the breaks to IMS failure ha ha. I guess it could be the CAT wearing too. It’s just annoying at this stage. I love the Halfords trick!

These engines can tick from time to time.

Has it had a recent oil change, that seems to smooth them out and also has it had a decent blow out?

Mine always runs better after a Italian tune up and it had a great one around the Welsh lanes two weeks ago.

Italian time up 🤣🤣 To be fair it’s a no on both counts. I think I’ll take it for a blast ha

Don't worry about it . Drive and enjoy my 987 used to do that but  remained totally reliable ..... the 981 sounds similar at tick-over  Worst case exhaust lifter. Oil change or slight leak on an exhaust ?

Hopefully. I can only hear it when I’m moving.

A friend of mine bought a 987 from an independent garage. It had supposedly been serviced before sale. Anyway, there was a ticking noise at idle which sounded like a hydraulic valve lifter not lifting. We simply changed the oil to Mobil 1 and hey presto, noise gone.

Really? I may try that. Although I don’t hear it when it’s idle. Thanks for the info though.

Stone is the tyre tread .?  If you take it out of gear or press the clutch and it’s still there at the same frequency then it’s to do with wheels or diff rather than engine.

Cheers Paul. I’ll have a look tomorrow. I was relieved that it was still doing it in neutral. It all started after I left my car with some Romanians to clean ha

Hope it’s that simple. Had similar in an Audi. Was actually a big chuck of metal in the tyre. Even though in that case it cost a relatively good tyre in my head I had specced out gearbox, bearings, suspension and brakes.
